THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL CONSOLE

Next Generation Custom Processor: Xbox Series X is our most powerful console ever powered by our custom designed processor leveraging AMD’s latest Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures. Delivering four times the processing power of an Xbox One and enabling developers to leverage 12 TFLOPS of GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) performance – twice that of an Xbox One X and more than eight times the original Xbox One. Xbox Series X delivers a true generational leap in processing and graphics power with cutting edge techniques resulting in higher framerates, larger, more sophisticated game worlds, and an immersive experience unlike anything seen in console gaming.

Variable Rate Shading (VRS): Our patented form of VRS empowers developers to more efficiently utilize the full power of the Xbox Series X. Rather than spending GPU cycles uniformly to every single pixel on the screen, they can prioritize individual effects on specific game characters or important environmental objects. This technique results in more stable frame rates and higher resolution, with no impact on the final image quality.

Hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing: You can expect more dynamic and realistic environments powered by hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing – a first for console gaming. This means true-to-life lighting, accurate reflections and realistic acoustics in real time as you explore the game world.

IMMERSION IN AN INSTANT

The next console generation will be defined by more playing and less waiting. And when play begins, we know many gamers demand ultra-low latency to be as immersed and precise as possible. To this end, the team analyzed every step between player and game, from controller to console to display, and asked how we could make it faster.

SSD Storage: With our next-generation SSD, nearly every aspect of playing games is improved. Game worlds are larger, more dynamic and load in a flash and fast travel is just that – fast.

Quick Resume: The new Quick Resume feature lets you continue multiple games from a suspended state almost instantly, returning you to where you were and what you were doing, without waiting through long loading screens.

Dynamic Latency Input (DLI): We’re optimizing latency in the player-to-console pipeline starting with our Xbox Wireless Controller, which leverages our high bandwidth, proprietary wireless communication protocol when connected to the console. With Dynamic Latency Input (DLI), a new feature which synchronizes input immediately with what is displayed, controls are even more precise and responsive.

HDMI 2.1 Innovation: We’ve partnered with the HDMI forum and TV manufacturers to enable the best gaming experience through features such as Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). ALLM allows Xbox One and Xbox Series X to automatically set the connected display to its lowest latency mode. VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh rate to the game’s frame rate, maintaining smooth visuals without tearing. Ensuring minimal lag and the most responsive gaming experience.

120 fps Support: With support for up to 120 fps, Xbox Series X allows developers to exceed standard 60 fps output in favor of heightened realism or fast-paced action.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF GAME COMPATIBILITY

The benefits of the next console generation extend in every direction, bringing greater visual fidelity and improved loading speeds to your existing gaming legacy, in addition to new games. We’re continuing our commitment to compatibility with Xbox Series X and investing in technology that makes game ownership easier across generations.

Four generations of gaming: Our commitment to compatibility means existing Xbox One games, including backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, look and play better than ever before. Your favorite games, including titles in Xbox Game Pass, benefit from steadier framerates, faster load times and improved resolution and visual fidelity – all with no developer work required. Your Xbox One gaming accessories also come forward with you.

Smart Delivery: This technology empowers you to buy a game once and know that – whether you are playing it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X – you are getting the right version of that game on whatever Xbox you’re playing on. We’re making the commitment to use Smart Delivery on all our exclusive Xbox Game Studios titles, including Halo Infinite, ensuring you only have to purchase a title once in order to play the best available version for whichever Xbox console they choose to play on. This technology is available for all developers and publishers, and they can choose to use it for titles that will be release on Xbox One first and come to the Xbox Series X later.

Xbox Game Pass: In addition to games from across four generations of consoles, our leading game subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, will continue to have our first party games, like Halo Infinite, included at their launch. We look forward to millions of you experiencing the Xbox Game Pass portfolio and immersing yourselves in a deep library of high-quality games, playing those you love now and also discovering your next great adventure.

A GENERATION WITH PLAYERS AT THE CENTER

Xbox Series X is our fastest, most powerful console ever, designed for a console generation that has you at its center. This means a high-fidelity gaming experience enclosed in a quiet and bold design, with the ability to discover thousands of games across four generations, all with more playing and less waiting.

Whether it’s empowering amazing creators at our 15 Xbox Game Studios, fueling game discovery with Xbox Game Pass, or expanding what and where you can play with Project xCloud, Team Xbox stands for frictionless pathways between players and the best experiences our remarkable art form has to offer. Xbox Series X represents that same commitment for players who want immediate immersion in games that also look and feel better than ever.

We can’t wait to share more details about the new Xbox with you in the coming months.

Uhhh, you're actually seriously mistaken on that one.. Technically… ALL Xbox Series X launch games will also be available on Xbox One and PC. One time purchase, you buy a game digitally on the Xbox store once and you will have access to the Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC versions. This goes for Halo Infinite, Forza Motorsport 8, Hellblade 2, etc.

Besides. There hasn't REALLY been Xbox exclusives for about five years now, since Halo 5. All Xbox One games since ReCore and Gears of War 4 back in 2016 have also been coming to PC and even available on Steam. So idk why you're whining about there's no "exclusives" there's no point in buying it wah wah. you people weren't going to buy this shit anyway.

>But can I play my steam games on the sex box?

I keep hearing rumors that say yeah, you can. Kind of, anyhow. Stuff about Microsoft building a Windows 10 Virtualization into the Xbox either as a feature of the OS or a separate download app. Between the overhead and the limitations they arbitrarily put on it, it's not going to be something you'll be able to use very well for next gen games, but it shouldn't have a problem playing previous gen titles.

Apparently, Microsoft wants to make good on their "Ecosystem" promises of making them all part of the same platform with the same capabilities - just tailored to different markets. They're going to be getting rid of the multiplayer paywall, which doesn't really fly with Cross-Platform play, once they have the market data to safely say they can transition over to Xcloud/GamePass as their primary subscription service. This kind of cuts the legs out from under Sony who only last gen introduced paid multiplayer and aren't going to want to give it up, and even if they do also transition over to PSNow subscriptions - the increased demand is just going to put more money in Microsoft's pockets now that they're running the servers that Sony's going to be using.

They also want to avoid the problem of this generation of games coming to PC and PS4, but not Xbox because they don't have a presence in Japan. Rather than dump millions into bribing Japanese companies for ports, they could just put Windows 10 on the Xbox and tell people to access them that way. Most Japanese games are smaller AA or lower-AAA titles that don't a lot of graphics power to run, and those that do tend to come to Xbox anyhow because the costs of high-end AAA developments generally prohibits exclusivity unless Sony or Nintendo are footing the bill.

They'd stand to lose quite a bit of money at the margins (current gen would still be their bread and butter) by opening up their machine and market to third party distributors like Steam - but I don't think most typical Xbox users are going to really bother. And there's also the possibility they're working with Valve to create a dedicated Steam/BPM app, which opens up several million new users to Steam at the cost of getting a portion of every sale made through the app. Doubt Gabe would want to have much to do with it considering how much he fucking hates Microsoft, but then again, he's also got EGS to worry about now and opening up Steam to 40~80 million new customers is a tempting advantage.

Yeah, I've heard the rumors myself. I guess we'll just see at E3 since I wouldn't mind getting it as a mini PC of sorts. Right now I don't see it worth the investment, but introduce steam into the eco system and Microsoft basically won the console war. Either way I'm surprised the Xboner X wasn't the Xbox steam machine since they were basically pushing everything onto PC at the time.

>but introduce steam into the eco system and Microsoft basically won the console war.

It gets better than that. I mean, one of Sony's big trump cards next generation is supposedly their "change of heart" on backwards compatibility and the claims that the PS5 will support PS4, PS2, and PSX games (maybe even PS3 and Vita/PSP as well) in order to lean on 25 years worth of games catalogs. But just by putting Windows 10 on the Xbox, then the Xbox has access to those same (and better) backwards compatibility options. It's nothing I think Microsoft will want to openly acknowledge, let alone support, but they damned well know the console warriors will pick up on it and spread it around by flinging shit. And because it's all happening in the virtualization of the PC, Microsoft can dodge all responsibility to crack down on it the way they have to crack down on emulators written for Xbox One and sold through the app store.

If the virtualized environment's settings are standard the same way Xbox hardware is standard, you might even see forks of popular emulators written specifically for maximum compatibility by targeting those set environments. This would essentially make the Xbox Series X the penultimate backwards compatibility machine - able to handle backwards compatibility with virtually every machine from every previous generation of consoles and handhelds and arcade cabinets and PC. Hell, MS's own failures would work to their own benefit, at least initially, since one of the biggest glaring holes in emulation is the Xbox family. Everybody makes Sony and Nintendo emulators, because Xbox is a why fucking bother machine. So the best place for customers to get older Xbox titles would still be Microsoft.

And it's a move that Sony absolutely has no capacity to counter. They don't have foot in the PC operating system market to compete, and would at best have to fall back on integrating a version of Linux running WINE… but even going that far, it would only be shooting themselves in the foot considering how strong the emulation scene for Sony consoles is - and you damned well know they are going to want to sell you those games again via PSN.

I don't know what's that even supposed to mean. Inputlag is an engine problem and has nothing to do with them.

They should also bundle cables with controllers and not charge extra for them. Who needs wifi? I don't wanna get brain cancer like my dad.

The Dreamcast wasn't running Windows, like - at all. The Windows CE licensing was regarding a suite of development tools that would make porting PC titles easier. None of that shit even loaded until the game started up, and only a relative handful of games even used the CE tools because they were complete garbage. The vast majority of games on the Sega Dreamcast were created using Sega's own internally developed dev tools.

>If all of that is true

It may well not be, but it could be. I think that's part of the point. Even if Microsoft has no plans like that, if they're ultimately behind the rumors, it could just be a way to throw Sony off and get them so distracted by so many avenues of competition that they can't do well in - that they end up making a more critical core mistake.

Ultimately, Microsoft's biggest advantage in all of this is that they don't have to give nearly as much of a fuck. Gaming is a decent side business for them, but it's not a core pillar of their corporate revenue. They have an operating budget, but it's not like how it is for Sony - where the Playstation is one of their only highly profitable divisions that are keeping the rest of the company afloat. If need be, Microsoft can afford to absorb a lot more losses while Sony has a much more delicate balancing act.

I also happen to be a software developer and the idea of a version of .NET Framework which is compatible across all platforms was absurd last decade. Now it's one of their biggest projects. Likewise, Microsoft has been trying to get more and more friendly with Unix OSes and there's even official support to VM Linux in Windows 10 now.

Backwards compatability is nice, but I am highly cautious on a few thing. The obvious is the system sellers, xbone had little to none of them same with ps4

I am also wondering how backwards compatable it will be, the 360 and bone were both finicky fuckers, not all games were backwards compatable. I missed me some gauntlet dark legacy on og xbox. The biggest one I can think of is will they try and pull the shit they did at the start of the xboner and say "no used games" which is still the only reason to get a console, aside from owning physical, since the time of plug and play consoles is dead. Now so far they do have a better offering than sony, who I dont trust to do backwards compatability properly anymore, but thats saying very little. Honestly though I can see xbox doing better this time than sony, provided they keep up with their more pro windows and pc gaming as of late. Heck, if valve was smart they would try and partner with them for better cross install bases. But thats my 2 cents.

Except it wasn't that way since they first arrived. Consoles used to run on their own unique architectures and platform holders used to have to sink a ton of cash into engineering and developing a new system from the ground up. Each time a new generation rolled around, developers basically had to learn to code for it from scratch since there were no middleware layers and you were lucky to even get more than an extremely basic intro-to manual in the way of development tools. It was a huge pain in the ass, but on the flip side, you had a lot of novel hardware configurations being developed and pitted against each other. Game developers had really know how to do their jobs in order to get the most out of the machines, which became more and more capable as the generation wore on and devs learned shortcuts, fully explored the system's capabilities and limitations, came up with their own dev tools… etc. And then all that shit got thrown out the window in five or six years when the new hardware was released.

Now they're all just AMD PCs running DX or Vulkan libraries and porting is held back more by licensing restrictions, distribution costs, and support investments. It used to be, to port a game, you damned neared had to nuke the entire thing down to the design documents and rebuild it from scratch.

The Cell Processor was probably the last great innovation we'll ever see out of hardware in the console space. From here on out, it's all x86 and ARM. Or at the very least, any new hardware standard is going to have to prove itself vital to an outside primary market long before it's economical to adopt into the console space. We're not developing new systems around latest Arcade cabinet boards anymore.

Your second pic says it all…it was too hard to dev on the console because there was no interface for it. They HAD to use a computer because it allowed easier and more controlled interface. >So do the 3rd party titles also have to run on the Xbone?

probably. in theory the dev would only need set the settings under the hood to run in lower res and graphics. an exclusive xbox 720 version would have to be marketed differently since people will expect xbone to be supported, which is even more of a headache for retail (so more costs and hoops to jump through). an exclusive version would also cut out all the "old" market, so it makes even less sense when you can just release one game but with lower settings.

which can mean 2 things: original xbone version will run like ass (probably depending how the market looks like over time and how many old/new console versions are still around) or devs won't go all out with the scarlet version and find some middleground so they have don't have to tune for 3 different console versions (so in the end the highest version will just have higher native resolution, maybe some easily applied AA and filters, and only if they really give a shit more fps since that is a way deeper part of the engine).

<dat xbot delusion

sure, and next step is linux support!

when will consolefags understand that it's a fucking walled garden for a reason? ms will never allow access out of fear people will break out of it and render all their software and service sales moot. that's why "backwards compatibility" is specifically tailored to each game. "windows on console" means fuck all if it's inaccessible.

consolefags are also fucking retarded and have the memory of a goldfish. microsoft is only playing the "good guy" because they got utterly dunked on by sony after they thought they got a big enough dick to wave around that people will eat anything (basically what pcfags have to endure for 30 years). it's like xniggers forget they paid for live for fucking years just to get their console online, and only after ps+ became mandatory (but had games) ms had to catch up to it. the minute microsoft is competitive again or even in the lead get ready to eat shit.

>Sony's big trump cards next generation is supposedly their "change of heart" on backwards compatibility and the claims that the PS5 will support PS4

it's not a change of heart but basic fucking necessity, so the point is worthless. if there's a hard cut and ps4 games are incompatible it would mean the ps5 launches with a single digit amount of games (as if) that will make the ps3 launch look like a gamer's paradise. plus as already explained if it's almost the same hardware anyway, it makes no sense to cut yourself off from those sales or have higher costs if you just need to set a lower number in a config file.

<at best have to fall back on integrating a version of Linux running WINE

This is what really kills RTRT as a feature. The promise of RTRT was fullscene rendering freeing devs and designers (i.e.: game mechanics) alike completely from limits imposed by hardware rasterization, but that requires games built ground-up to 'require RTRT. As long as backward compatibility is needed, that will never happen.

FFS, the demoscene was doing things with raytracing ALMOST TWO DECADES AGO no commercial game has done to this day.

Not really special, if you remember "PC" back then included diversity beyond the IBM compatible WinTel blob of today. Genesis was very similar to Amiga, SNES was much like IIGS, and early dev pipelines leveraged this. Plus a lot of consoles were literally cut down versions of their manufacturer's PCs (Atari 5200, Sega Mk. 1), and of course many cheap PCs (C64, ST, MSX) competed head-to-head with consoles.

Because it was decades ahead of anything else. It was basically a 32-bit microprocessor that shipped before the first 8-bit PCs . And the only reason that happened was because the earlier 8-bit 6800 team was so angry Motorola refused to cut their sales prices, they quit, formed MOS, and sold their 6502 for 1/50th the price of any other CPU. If that had been the 68000 team, we would've skipped the entire 8-bit & 16-bit PC eras clear back in the 1970s. Of course, Motorola fucked that captive market up when RISC hit by ignoring and killing their 88k before it launched, so that the unified 1980s Motorola front fighting Intel was dispersed to a dozen squabbling RISC ISAs by the 1990s including the Motorola-backed PPC which IBM/Motorola/Apple proceeded to fuck up again and again.

Rumor has it even IBM actually considered 68k for the IBM PC before going with the Intel-based CP/M knockoff garbage design

They tried that for 10 years and it didn't work , if anything, their retarded move to stick to the console space after trying to force a metric ton of bullshit like GFWL and paid online on PC has backfired horribly.

Not only is most of their fanbase either gone to mobileshit or the PS4 like the casualshitters they are but Steam proved that the garbage system they tried to force could be done much less horribly and is now the dominant platform on PC.

Microsoft could have had a holding hand on PC gayman which is at the size of all consoles combined nowadays, and instead they're fighting for scraps, it's fucking laughable.

>abandoning directsound so we have to deal with creative's shit

That wasn't really MS's fault, but the result of a broader murder-suicide pact against Creative by the entire industry (including former backers of other standards such as OpenAL, I3DL2, Q3D, GameCODA, etc.) around when Intel monopolized the FSB market for a while and released the software unaccelerated Intel HD Audio spec just in time for Windows Vista. Everybody in the industry (mobo manufacturers, gamedevs, engine/middleware vendors, audio chipset vendors) eliminating support of any kind for audio hardware and OS-level audio APIs of any kind beyond dumb bitstreams.

It worked, completely obliterating Creative from relevance within maybe 3 years tops, but of course by the time Creative was confirmed dead an entire generation of gamedevs (and gamers) had grown up without any familiarity for realtime 3D positional audio, nor for external APIs reaching deep inside their game's sound system. The excuse given to gamers (who were also increasingly angry with Creative's antics) was that multicore, vector units, more graphics pipeline tasks offloaded to GPGPUs, IPC gains, and sheer clock speed, meant CPUs had gained enough power to render hardware audio acceleration unnecessary. This was true, but gamedevs went completely overboard, completely gutting their games' audio by simply stripping out their hardware mixing paths, leaving behind only the UNMODIFIED legacy software mixers that were NEVER intended as more than a fallback option.

Hopefully VR will provide impetus for some kind of new OS-level positional 3D API, probably from AMD (TrueAudio) or nVidia (APU/VRWorks).

>or slowly moving off directshow to push their media foundation drm shit

Again, I think MS (and anything Windows-related) probably doesn't deserve most of the blame for that. Instead, the fault lies with a crossplatform trend impacting Windows, Mac, & Linux alike, of web browsers and other garbage like VLC eschewing OS-level CODEC APIs, instead embedding crippled, ancient, statically linked copies of FFMPEG libs inside themselves.

I would not be so lenient in judging one of MS's competitors having done something similar: Apple didn't just eliminate the ability to use 3rd-party plugins in their playback CODEC API, but in their encoding CODEC API, when they dumped QuickTime <7 for "'QuickTime' X". Even worse, this coincided with Apple's release of ground-up rewrites for iMovie, GarageBand, Final Cut, and Logic; a compatibility-breaking OS upgrade; and increasingly severe neglect of their Mac Pro workstation hardware. As might be predicted for a platform known primarily as a professional creative arts authoring environment, this made lots of vocal people extremely angry.

eh, ms owns the platform, it's in their interest to provide a proper abstracted API, especially with vidya devs being retarded as you mentioned.

besides, they were willing to fuck everyone with xinput, so why not directsound? either do it properly or not at all.

well, there's a reason for that but I don't media foundation are gonna fix it. plus vlc isn't necessarily a good example, they are more the exception to the rule, which doesn't necessarily makes them more popular either.

it also feels more like DRM fuckery, I don't want to install HEVC via the fucking windows store, even if it's "free", which will only get worse once it's the only way to add extra codecs, and lead to more monolithic players like vlc.
