I can't see to stop playing this fucking game. I beat all four routes and the new DLC. I forced myself to stop and play some older games I never got around to (System Shock 2 and Dark Souls) but I'm still feeling the urge to go back and do a 5th playthrough. Is Three Houses really that good or have I randomly developed autism in my mid 30s?

Because once upon a time it really wasn't, Geneology and Thracia really don't slot into very well to being a babbys first. While its true 1 is clunky and what could be considered as such, it didn't exactly have to compete because pretty much all games like it were like that.
It only really became such around 6, where it barely any competition. The intention of 6 was to be an easy way to get into more "full Fire Emblem", except the latter game fucked off into the aether with the original creator; the closest thing to this concept would be conquest vs birthright ironically.
Awakening onwards is basically a bunch of complexity technically; just that most of these games sure as shit do not need it to be used. I think the easily broken nonsense of Awakening was probably one of the other selling points of it to the masses.
Even if its a terrible designed mess from nearly every aspect besides mechanics. If FE sold by value of being simple, it wouldn't have nearly crashed and burned due to the 1/3 remakes.

Same thing with Front Mission. They refuse to make a new TRPG and the most recent game was a terrible TPS. SE is poorly ran and only goes with what's (safe) for the most part. They do make some small projects but they'll never tie it to an old IP. Despite that, they still fuck up their big IPs like KH and FF. FFXIV, Dragon Quest, and mobage really do keep them afloat.

Geneologys "save scumming" is for its fuck huge maps. 3 has it for a similar reason. It won't save you from a lot of its mechanics.
If you end up with a bunch of subs or bad children gen 2 will be an absolute shitshow. Its very breakable with foresight but not from a just smash your head against RNG perspective.
It likes huge groups of enemies too much for that.

I did Awakening, a bit of Fates and a bit of FE7 but I never really could get into the series. Something about the fact that a single unlucky crit could fuck up your whole plan and force you to restart if you didn't want to permanently lose one of your units because of bad RNG didn't really click with me to be honest. Add some other things like enemy reinforcements being able to appear anywhere in the map without notice and acting in the same turn soured the experience more to me. I know that Awakening and Fates are trash tier and not an indicative of the good games, but I doubt I would've enjoyed the other games since my issues come with the core mechanics the franchise is known for.
I heard Three Houses is supposedly pretty good, but I don't hear anything about the gameplay. How is it compared to the rest? What makes people like it other than the fact it's not Awakening/Fates-tier?

It's easier on normal mode compared to the other games. Play it on hard. It has infinite unit customization. Any character can be any class and you get fine tune their skills more closely than any RPG I've played. Your complaint about crits screwing you over has been fixed in Three Houses. You can either play in casual mode where your units come back after a battle if they were killed and there is also a divine pulse mechanic where a few times per map you can turn back time for as many turns as you want.

Threadly reminder that Edelgard did nothing wrong even if I did side with the Church on my first playthrough
With that out of the way, holy shit Ashen Wolves on Hard/Classic is actually kicking my ass. I'm only on Chapter 4 yet I already have more than a few hours invested into it. Constance is probably my favorite of the four character wise, though I find very little use for both her and Hapi during the actual gameplay. They're ridiculously easy to get killed, during the side story at least, and they don't do enough damage to warrant putting into action. That said, Balthus is decent, and Juri is insanely good. Ironically, I get more use out of the three lords in their default classes + Ashe; his Deadeye is sick. Giving Swordmaster Byleth the Killing Edge during the side story also makes him pretty broken; you'll be doing crit hits almost nonstop.
What's everyone's first/favorite route? I've only completed Silver Snow so far and I thought it was decent. I really liked how personal the fight/war against Edelgard felt, especially after the battle at Gronder when the Empire rules all of Fodlan save for the tiny area that is the Monastery. This minuscule group fighting against the ruler of the whole nation in her home territory just felt really cool. The final boss was a bit disappointing from a story standpoint, but the fight itself was really fun. Sometimes I wonder if Nemesis should've been swapped with Immaculate One in SS. I think it'd fit better, but fighting and killing Rhea ties in nicely with the whole tragic and melancholy theme of the route, what with literally every lord and ally from the three different factions all dying. I'm about 3/4 of the way through Blue Lions, and I can see why people call this the best written route. I do think Dimitri is somewhat overrated; I see a lot of people praise him in the route because "he's a gud boi uwu" when in reality you outright see him fucking torturing a captured general for kicks. I get he's a tragic character and has a redemption arc, but he shouldn't in a million years be called "the most heroic character in the game" or some nonsense like that. I'm debating between Crimson Flower or Verdant Wind for my next route. Also do yourselves all a favor and make Felix into a Mortal Savant, Sylvain a Dark Knight, and Ingrid a Pegasus Knight, you'll win every encounter with this trio

Skip to 49:00. It does worse than that. It's complete nonsense. It means that Shinra is willing to destroy it's mako reactors to combat a group that is of little threat. It also means that Shinra is tracking and set a trap for a group that hasn't proven themselves to be a threat and is willing to cause a lot of damage to their own equipment for someone who hasn't proven themselves to be a threat. This also fucks with the entire plate drop part. Assuming the story continues as per the original, they will drop a plate and cause a shit ton of damage to kill a non-threat that they've been tracking who's hideout they should be able to find. After all, they did know Avalanche was going to sabotage the reactor. That means they must have gotten inside info. The whole story is going to be a mess and a bunch of "true and honest fans" of FF7 are going to eat it up. The damage control has already started in the comment section of one demo.

The Ashen Wolves DLC is much harder than the main game. Personally I would do it on normal mode instead of hard. I think Eldegard's route is the best. You should save Verdant Wind for last because it ties a lot of things together and makes the most sense if you've done all the other routes. I did it first and that was a mistake. That's why I'll be doing it again for my 5th playthrough
Dimitri is definitely overhyped and I don't think his bad traits are justified. It just makes him seem like a little bitch imo. If you pair him with Hapi that's definitely the best ending for her though.

Depends on what you want to use them for; Raphael is a brawler/war master type that can be swapped out for Caspar and Alois for similar results, Ignatz is an archer/assassin type that's dodgey as fuck but hits with the force of a dead sardine so if you're gonna replace him I'd say go for either Shamir (really good base stats but not so good growths and not much use outside of sniper, but sniper's are amazing anyways) or Ash (who won't have as good bases and can get strength screwed but if he levels up right he will be a crit machine that hits like a freight train and if you want you can make him a pretty good wyvern rider, but I prefer to keep him a sniper for Hunters Volley since its one of the best combat arts in the game), Lorenz is a bit of a toss up since you're either gonna replace him with another cavalier or a mage so I'll say go for either Hanneman (as a magic nuke, with some bow gimmicks) or Mercedes (for arguably the best healer in the game at the price for the worst dub voice in the game) for as a replacement mage or pick up Ingrid as a replacement mounted unit since she's good and no one in the golden deer really fit in to the pegasus knight role.
That all being said, I feel obligated to defend/shill for the three since Golden Deer was my first pick and I got fond memories of the crew;

Don't worry so much about the guy's speed or resistance; he's going to grow enough hp that he can eat just about any punch thrown at him and slap some killer knuckles on the guy to turn him in a melee nuke that fucks up everything that gets thrown his way. Character wise he is a bit flat but I don't everyone needs to be a deep and serious type; he's just a simple, kind man and that's all he needs to be.

Is an annoying little shit when it comes to his personality muh knight hood, muh painting just be both nigger, even Lorenz tells him it. He's annoying from a gameplay view as well, but in a good way; he will almost never kill anything on his own since he has terrible strength growths, but as an assassin? Nothing can touch this mother fucker. By the end of my golden deer run he was a better dodge tank than even Petra, and he was underleveled too. Alternatively, class him as a sniper and grab hunters volley like >>16857014 says and drink in the salty, bloodied tears of assassins as he renders their evasion meaningless and rips them to shreds.

Character wise, he's kinda like a more arrogant Ferdinand with Sylvain's attempts at being a ladies man but with none of the charm- he's meant to be a unlikable guy at first glance. Beneath that though is a guy who is genuine in his attempts to shape a better future for the alliance, he knows its in rough shape and that he's going to have to step up to the plate for it some day and will work for it even if it damages his own happiness. Gameplay wise the guy fits in to the dark knight role like a glove; train him along the soldier cavalier line before reclassing him as a Dark Knight and you'll have a chad he's actually more successful with women than Sylvain, considering all the A supports he has that has skill in both melee and magic while having enough defense to make up for his subpar speed.

Something else I should have mentioned about Lorenz is that while you spec him as a soldier and cav make sure you're still training him in reason and maybe even faith for when you turn him in to a DK, if you're worried about his riding level then assign him to stable duty with either Leonie or Marianne if you want the latter as a Holy Knight.

Cool, just so you know he will pop up as an enemy in the timeskip and if you want to re-recruit him make sure you take him down with the professor. Train both him and Ignatz down fighter and brigand before making either of them an assassin or a sniper so you can squeeze as much strength out of them as possible and grab death blow. Don't worry about whether or not you need a thief since Ashe's personal skill is that he can open doors and chests no matter which class he is.

Keep in mind that she has one of the lowest speed growths among magic users in the game, but you can still make her work since she can potentially be one of your best medics with her fortify spell if you're the type that keeps your units close together. She is definitely at her best in the Golden Deer since the GD medic is more combat oriented than the other career medics and between Flayn, Marianne, and Lysithea you can get all the utility magic spells; rescue (Flayn), silence (Marianne), and warp (Lisithea).
One last piece of advise since you're playing GD, train Claude in swords, not axes.

Well, Claude's paralogue gives him a relic sword that requires an A rank in sword to use so I say train him if you want to use it. You probably are better off making her a DK, thinking it over, it really is just straight up better than HK and I only made her a HK in my first GD run since she didn't have a high enough level in lances to pull it off, I would still recommend getting her to c+ in swords so she can use soul blade and get the most use out of her heroes relic.

The sword you get from that paralogue isn't just for Claude. It's linked to his crest but all that means is he heals slightly more per turn than your other units when using it. It's not like a hero's relic that increases in weight and damages crest-less workers. You can give it to anyone and it's better for Claude to go all in for bows.

I played Three Houses because my friend bought a Switch and it was one of the most boring RPGs I've ever played.
OP, if the concept of a grid-based RPG was what you found interesting, try playing other TRPGs.
Disgaea has better gameplay with exponentially more mechanical depth.
Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre have much more engaging writing and characters.
Hell even stuff like Utawarerumono and Kamidori Alchemy Meister are better games than Fire Emblem, and those are titty games.

FE loves its noble prince characters often straightforward as such. It rarely makes them complicated and focuses on their virtue. Utawarerumono has stat assignment and later games have you customizing characters by adding bonuses/skills to them. The gameplay of the first one is pretty barebones (about on par with Fire Emblem really) but gets more complex with the rereleases. Plot and characters are great in all of them, blowing shit like Three Houses the fuck out. Kamidori has class changing, item forging and more, it's actually pretty damn complex and filled with content. Plot is generally weaker but the gameplay more than makes up for it.
Stop playing babbies first srpg. Fire Emblem was always mechanically shallow, making it piss easy and bloating it with persona filler did it no favors.

I noticed 1 thing about this game has been really fucking me up, I guess it's a type of completionist or perfectionist mentality that I have. I have been finding myself to be far too reliant on guides and it's really slowing me down and ruining my experience. When it comes to giving gifts and more often dialogue choices, I always start looking shit up and it really sucks. I don't want to give the wrong answer when I know I could either save scum or just look up the correct answer. I have this problem with the Persona series also, but this game seems so much worse. I mean I have like 8 different tabs open when I play this game just to make sure I select correct answers or give the right gifts. I also noticed I should be save scumming when my characters get shitty ass level up's, but thank god I haven't taken it that far, I would literally never complete a chapter if I started doing that too.
Do I need to be this way? I'm fine with certain decisions effecting the outcome of the game, I'm more talking about minor decisions. Things like giving the proper gifts, or making the correct dialogue choice to raise support level, things like the annoying ass advice box. Am I obsessing over something that I should just ignore? Help.

You're taking the game way too seriously. It's not so hardcore that you need to be doing all that. It's ok to fail conversation checks. You'll easily get the S ranks you want without them. Save scumming won't work for level ups. All of your characters level ups are decided when you start the game. They did that because everyone did save scumming in the previous games.

The problem with Fire emblem level ups is that the stats AND the quantity of gains is random. Theoretically it should balance out over time but a sequence of bad level ups early on can end up gimping a character for the rest of the playthrough, such as when I tried the Blue Lions route and Ingrid had consistently bad level ups. There's no need for random stat gains on top of the free class changing system, but fire emblem could at least garuntee a certain amount of points gained each level if not the distribution of those points.

The thing with the whole random stat thing is attached to how the game was originally intended, characters were unstable and very mortal; however since everyone would just restart instead of doing the intended playstyle of dealing with it. It basically got scrapped around FE6.
I'm reminded that one of the telius gamesor was it both had set level ups as a bonus, the direction that FE naturally took doesn't even make sense with random level ups at this point.
I suppose as a legacy feature it makes sense, but it really shouldn't be the only option for the series at this point.
