The flu isn't really one sickness, it's a broad term caused by an absolute fuckload of different strains of orthomyxoviridae.
The worst genera of them is Influenzavirus A, and of those the worst strain is H1N1.
Some strains just make you feel like shit, others bedrid you like H1N1. The last time there was an outbreak of of it was in 2009. It killed around half a million people, and that was with modern medical practices, quarantines and hospitals.
That said, it's strange to me that media is using the "MuH flU" angle, as if somehow that makes literally thousands of COVID-19 deaths OK. You could say the same about literally any virus that isn't influenza or HIV.
It's not really going to be much of a concern here in the west, but it shows how fucking poorly China was prepared for this and how awful their health system is.
