ITT: Games that were hot property pre release, but faded into obscurity afterwards.
I remember there were constant threads about "from dust" on 4chan before it's release.

From Dust was fun and the tech was pretty interesting, but the game ultimately lacked content and they never put out any sequels to iterate on the engine. Naturally the game faded from memory quickly after players experienced it and moved on.
Didn't help that each level more or less had the same goal of "reach the exit". Only the final level really shook things up by unlocking all your powers on a blank map and requiring only that you survive the ritual storm.
I really wanted to see bigger maps, more free-form level design, and varied goals.
Also a multiplayer mode for collaborative building (or even a versus mode where you're trying to destroy the other guy's villages with creative natural disasters while protecting yourself from the same) would have been nice to see.
Tl;dr: great potential squandered on a bite-sized proof-of-concept campaign.

Its a fun lemmings esque game but you'll play through it once and then never touch it again because the solution to every level is always the same

People pissed themselves over anything with terraforming but the only game that got it nearly right was the original Red Faction.
Can anyone remember the, (I think) very early PS1 game that made some incredibly dubious claims about 'releasing endorphins' in the player's brain pre-release and buzzkill parents thought vidya might get their kids high for 5 seconds. Fucked if I can recall the name but that went up in a puff of smoke as soon as it appeared.

I was expecting a lite RTS with a healthy dose of God game management mechanics. It was made by the guy, Éric Chahi, who did Another World/Heart of Darkness, so I had some hope for it. Never trust a frog, I say. Actually, never trust any name that has been resting on their laurels for a decade.

Eh, it was perfectly in line with his previous work which was minimalist and highly aesthetic.
I don't see why people keep expecting things from games which they very clearly had no intention of doing. You buy a game from Eric Chahi and you want a game made by Molyneux and get angry when it isn't. You buy a game from Molyneux and then you get mad that you got another quality title made by Molyneux instead of some game that doesn't, and will never, exist outside your head. This makes no sense to a rational human being.
Why does every game have to be an autism simulator with you guys? Arcade games had simple mechanics and they were great anyway, because they were effective. I myself prefer games without needless bloat, that takes a thing and does it well. Bloat does not make a game better.

The previous games under his direction had far more care put into the actual game design. All I got was playing with swirling balls of shit, toilet water and flaming shit balls. They teased it as a God game and that's what I expected of it. You probably came to it after that fact and don't realize what a shit blossom it is in relation.

Oh man. I tried that one in the free version and the way it was presented was a goddamn PR nightmare. Every time you tried to get into a game as a f2per, it would try for a minute or so, then give up and throw you into a bot game. By yourself. And give you the implication that you could play with real people if you bought the full game. I also wish it had caught on but the mismanagement was real.

Toxikk could have been great but they fucked it with their f2p-but-not-really model. I tried to get a bunch of friends together (a few owned it, a few with the free version) and it was a fucking nightmare.
If they'd gone all-in, made everything free, and then charged for the "full version" that just let you customise your character and host listen servers, it could have been amazing. But instead they shot themselves in the foot at the first step of a marathon.
Fucking idiots.

From Dust flopped because it's a very linear tech demo marketed as a sandbox game. Though it was really interesting watching a Egyptian Nile type river delta forming or playing with my big volcano island. I got a lot of WOW TECHNOLOGY moments out of that game despite the brain dead complexity and gameplay mechanics 7.7/10.

Kinda sad. I liked it.
I'm a sucker for RTS where one faction is "alien" and has a core gimmick that is actually central to them.
Reminded me of Earth 2160, where there was an alien faction that also made soldiers by stationing huge disc-creatures on deposits of water and silicon and then split them into smaller bits.
I think it also had poor balance. The "tech advanced" faction was notoriously bad when compared to the Alpha's.

I remember about 6 years ago, there was a time-based RTS where you had a propagating timeline and you could use some kind of resource to send your units back in time to alter previous battles, and over time, stuff would become "canonized" so you couldn't affect it anymore, and the further back in time you sent your units the more it cost. I was looking forward to it coming out but I'm guessing it fell flat
