Specifically the First World War. seems like there used to be loads of them now they basically don't exist. ROF is pretty solid but its business model is greedy and predatory. Does anyone know of any others? feel free to discuss old ones also

Answer: Battlefield 1 ruined any hope of you getting a decent WW1 Dogfighting game ever again. Real shame too because I really fucking hate ROF's engine, the load times are too excessive and you can't customise your plane's paint job like in Red Baron 1 and 2. But yeah I blame BF1 down to the fact that it killed the market for this type of game.

you really think it was BF1 though? it's a very casualised flight sim model and doesn't scratch the more in depth itch people like me have and honestly i couldn't find a good flight sim before it came out either

The non-sim flight game genre as a whole is pretty much dead. From large developers you have Ace Combat, which is modern planes, and nothing. If there are indie devs dripping out titles once in a while, they aren't making much of a splash–but it was always a pretty small genre. Even 6DOF shooters are rare. It's like a lot of other small genres in this modern gaming hell we live in: major developers churn only their least risky properties, crap out nondescript no-risk platformers, action games, and shooters to give people something to buy between those, and leave everything else to indie devs of which four of five are busy copycatting whatever genre has been successful lately or are mired in kickstarter projects that never feel finished because there was always the promise of more.

Project Wingman is all we have to look forward to, and that's also modern planes.
I blame War Thunder for the problems with the genre. I know they didn't cause it, but they've certainly inhibited growth.

You can kinda have this experience in Warthunder, but only if you remain in Tier 1, since it is a WW2 sim game, however tier 1 still has biplanes.

Schools focusing far too much on the fantasized version of World War II, as depicted in the recent Wolfenstein bastardizations, and less on the political and contractual fuckery that led to the Great War.
