There are two things that drastically improve the ability to play aggressively that I forget when they are unlocked.
Special orders. Able to use three units at once, moving and attacking as one. And the APC. Which means dropping infantry in the right places.
Proper positioning is key, because while you might feel one unit is underpowered, when they work together, and able to return fire all together, it is a different story.
The only classes ever got annoyed with and save scummed because of the RNG really was tanks not taking out their targets, and lancers fucking up point blank.
The side stories however really do help get into treating the classes right. Scouts are supposed to bum rush, and set up ambushes. Infantry work together, with bonuses. Some are able to weather damage better then others.
And the obvious, don't forget to look at equipment and layout.
