d59151  No.16841724[Last 50 Posts]

I saw a news article saying this is out now. I don't have kikeflix and am waiting for a torrent.

Is it a straight up animated show or is it some interactive thing?

Anybody seen it?

It's based on Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

Personally I think IV would have made a great series, or a series of movies (one movie per character, then a couple of movies as an ensemble Avengers style).

I watched it last night. Keep in mind that while I did play DQV it was a long time ago and don't remember most of the details. That being said, here's my take:

So by virtue of condensing the story of a fucking JRPG into 1h40 the pacing is absolutely horrible, especially in the first 20 minutes where they just straight up machine gun the whole thing, making it hard to keep up despite some important details containing in it.

Most characters are hardly developed, with Luca (the Hero) just barely scraping by. It's abundantly clear that the movie was made for fans of the original game, most of whom already know what to expect.

Not to say that there weren't any highlights. Bianca owns every scene she's in. Luca meeting his past self was actually a bit touching. The fights were good too.

Easily the best part of the film is the visuals. Fuck me, they tweeked Toriyama's designs with just enough subtlety to make them their own and by God it worked. I could stare at Luca, Bianca and Nera's renders for hours.

Oh, and the soundtrack is great, obviously.

Anyway, what's gonna get people talking is the twist at the ending.

Turns out that all the events of the film were actually happening in a fictional VR remake of DQV inside an arcade during a rando's playthrough

The climax with the villain in-game is interrupted by a virus, created by an unnamed offscreen hacker that hates people who immerse themselves in games stories, claiming that their experiences are fake. The virus procedes to delete the game world

Luca is helped by an antivirus who was disguised as the slime companion all this time. The hero fights back and kills the virus, saying that his memories with the game are real and worth cherishing

The film does give some hints of the whole thing being inside a game here and there though. So it's not completely out of left field. The biggest giveaway is the movie title.

I get what they were going for, though. I thought the ending was cute.

You can play all of them in whatever order you like but some of the games are in trilogies which are 1,2,3 which is the Erdrick trilogy and 4,5,6 which is the Zenitian trilogy.

With the rest of the games they are all stand alone so you can go nuts with their order.

>PS2 or 3DS for 8

PS2 definitely

the added characters in the 3DS version are a little too powerful, leading to favoritism parties

the orchestral from the PS2 version was ditched in favor of midi (which is funny because the orchestral was initially exclusive to international releases. The japanese PS2 version had the same midi the international 3DS version has while the japanese 3DS version has the orchestral)

monsters on the map feels wrong as map monsters were originally uniques to catch for the coliseum

and of course, the censorship. Now, before you go blaming america, it was actually toned down to suit new regulations for Japan's CERO ratings bureau

>Switch for 11

3DS if you can read moonrunes. Being able to freely switch between 2d and 3d gameplay just by changing from stick to dpad is liberating. I also prefer the aesthetic (being closer to 8 on PS2) over the overly post-processed console/PC versions

I beat the GBC version of DQ1 on my 3ds (using a virtual console injector) and it looked so bad and outdated it strained the shit out of my eyes, I made it halfway through 2 before I had to stop.

What do you guys have against the accents, how does it bother you so much as to want to play a different version entirely?

Do you guys struggle with it because you're non-native english speakers or what not?

One of my favorite parts about the 3ds port of DQ5 was the text that the final boss had https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dBbD9nbnVs

Also the ds remakes are fine and are incredibly well made, the new animations, new content here and there and updated grahpics made it obvious they put a lot of work and love into those remakes, I played them myself a few months back so the memories are still fresh in my mind. I don't know how bad the origonal DQ7 was but I heard that the beginning is WAAAAAAY slower than the 3ds version and the beginning is slow as fuck enough.

Don't play the switch remakes for 1-3, they're fucking terrible and look even worse than the mobile versions of those games.

I dropped the 3DS version of DQ8 because of the fucking menu, believe it or not.

I'm absolutely astounded that they scrapped that sweet menu screen from the PS2 version. It would have been a perfect fit for a touchscreen.

But no.

They had to fuck it up by replacing it with that shitty classic text-only menu from the old games, completely devoid of color, icons and personality. I know that Dragon Quest is all about keeping tradition and shit but this is just fucking asinine.

I don't care how much you want to preserve the old feel of the games, Enix, nobody opens the fucking menu to TALK to a fucking NPC anymore. Leave that shit behind for fuck's sake.

Because using them in text only games just makes it hard to understand for anyone that isn't familiar with the accents being used, in a way "accented voice and standard text" doesn't have. And because unless trying to equate an accent in the original script, it's a wholly pointless extra expense in editing. Dragon Quest IV is missing the party chat, most likely because Square-Enix felt having to add that extra layer to stuff people may or may not bother with just wasn't worth the expense. And then there was that era we were missing like six or seven games in the series on the 3DS/Wii/WiiU; since Square seems to have it in their heads that the games NEED accents to sell well here after VIII did so well (I suspect the FFXII demo disc might have played a larger role), I'd wager they simply didn't think those were worth the additional "required" cost/time they'd have to dump into doing so against how much profit they'd make back. If they'd only do standard text in the west, they'd save money on editing and make more back (as long as they actually bothered to market/don't poz or censor the translations).

Also the general idea of "culturization" that's being forced on the entire western base.

This is why I still stand by the idea that you don't try to adapt JRPGs into an animated series, let alone into shorter-spanning film or OVA. Even with, say, 26 episodes, and cutting out grind, there's still a lot of nuances to the plot or characters that can be missed in condensation. I'd honestly consider it a much better idea for works that aren't adaptations, or at least adaptation of the same events as the game in question. Either expand on something the game itself doesn't, or borrow elements to make a standalone entry based on that world/universe.

You say that like as if its a bad thing.

Later DQ games do that to a higher degree by having towns with infrastructure which is inspired by real world places such as China, Japan, Europe, Russia?, Egypt, and the Middle East.

It isn't really forced, its simply part of the game. I can understand why people whose first language isn't English would struggle to read foreign accents in English and why they would need a direct translation to better understand the game.

Sorry, I meant that the site that hosted the patch has long since been baleeted off the net. I'm hoping someone has a prepatched ROM or something at this point.

Can you share it if it's any good? My (usually decent) private tracker still doesn't have it.

torrentdownloads.me and limetorrents.info has some versions of the movie, just look up dragon quest and you'll find em ez pz.

I don't know how well they work though, I downloaded a torrent off a webstie and the movie only came with the audio and subtitles but not the actual video of the movie.

So that is now an impossibility.

>What do you guys have against the accents, how does it bother you so much as to want to play a different version entirely?

An entire fucking chapter of pic related.

And I am a native English speaker; Ragnar's chapter is loaded with not only heavy accents, but outright deviation into Scotch.

The dips into Russian accents in the second chapter are much less intrusive.

Some dumbass localizer got it into their heads that DQ8 only sold in the west because of the "funny accents" and we were forever cursed. Never minding that it had a gorgeous aesthetic, excellent gameplay as the genre goes, and a rich story.

It might interest you to learn that the pimp PS2 menu for DQ8 was also exclusive to international versions, and the Japanese menu was the classic text-based one.

That would help. Plenty of non-Scots speakers know what "ken" means, especially if they read old British shit. Having to constantly unfuck the words is cumbersome when reading less so than when it's being spoken at you. Isn't it also inconsistent? I get the feeling "no doubt" should be accented up, too. It reads like a slipping accent sounds, so it just sounds bad in your head, too.

Yeah, it's clearly just throwing in a few scots words into an otherwise english sentence to give it some 'flavour'. Like how we think of "old english" as just a bunch of "thee thou art" etc. mixed among modern english.

A more accurate translation might be:

A taek it youse ken whit for like A'd talk tae youse

At this point it becomes pretty incomprehensible to the average English speaker, especially a child. Bear in mind I don't speak scots, I only know some of the vocabularly second hand, so this is probably wrong too.

ken refers to the range of one's knowledge or sight. It's primarily a noun but can be verbed
