In addition to Nintendo and Sony ditching E3, now Doritos Pope is skipping it. According to Geoff it's due to the changes the ESA are planning on making, and judging from what they've said it looks like E3 is going to be a shitshow the likes of which we've never seen before.

I think everyone predicted that the end of E3 was near last year, especially with that massive doxxing leak that happened. Seems like the ESA still hasn't fixed that leaking problem since even resetera was able to find the information on the site. I'm guessing every company will switch to the direct approach that Nintendo does from now on. I guess the only cringe we'll have to rely on yearly is the video game awards which Dorito Pope does benefit from.

E3 did change. It used to be a media presentation, where companies bragged about their sales numbers to journalists, discussed their next big initiatives (Nintendo back in 94 or so talked about anti-piracy and even agreed with Sega in that regard) and next games. E3 2006, Reggie's first, he was talking about the DS outselling the PSP and stuff like that.
Nowadays these companies just announce their financial info in shareholder meetings, while games are announced via a few days of buildup on Twitter and a video announcement or a stream. Nintendo realized back in 2011 that game demos are much better when they're strictly controlled instead of live (Remember Skyward Sword and Wii Music?). Better demo for the company, more HYPE or whatever they call it for the general audience. Between the irrelevance of announcing financial info to journalists and announcing games to journalists, E3 serves little purpose nowadays.

What you want is the japanese events then mate during the public days when some magazines can ask them to shoot the shit or whatever. IIRC, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the producer of Devil May Cry 1-3-4 / Sengoku Basara series / Resident Evil series Producer / ResiEvil2 programmer and Kamiya caught up in a TGS show and they both had long blog posts with photos of them shooting the shit and how they do with vidya these days(back in 2013 I think?) and it's where the whole "Kamiya want to come back to DMC" thing came about because Kamiya told Kobayashi he'd like to work with his old pal once again.
It's a shame we can't see that from western devs anymore because vidya's srs binnez after the 90s so we'll never see another old idsoft dudes saying awesome shit about their games on camera without a stick up their ass.
