After playing Hyrule Warriors I‘m ready to take the musou pill. What are the best games in this genre? Also, which of the Dynasty Warrior Gundam games is the best? Seems like people are pretty divided on that particular series.

Hyrule Warriors is the best Musou I've played, simply because of the way it implemented items and boss fights and secrets. It really broke up the monotony of wading through mooks of gooks to fight LuBu again. That and all the Zelda fan-service, as well as the hottest Zelda the series has ever seen. And the most bad-ass Ganondorf.

I personally prefer Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2, and 3 is okay. Never played Gundam Reborn, and the first one is either complete trash if you like the faster paced gameplay of the later gundam musous, or just okay if you like it slower. The story/cutscenes are at least worth a watch.

I've only played DWG1, but man was it a fucking slog. Also, the horizontal axis is flipped and there's no way to change it. Lots of gundams though, but not worth it in the least.
Musou games are shit. I'm played Dynasty Warriors, DW Gundam, and even Bleach SR. They're just not fun. At least Hyrule had dozens of shitty games to build on and avoid many of the pitfalls.

2, as well as 1, have the traditional Dynasty Warriors maps. As in, the maps you fight in reflect where you're supposed to be in the game's story (Like the Colony Laser from Zeta Gundam, or the underground/aboveground map at Jaburo where you have to escape the underground before it explodes). There is a lot of variety, and the missions also reflect this.
3 throws it out of the window, and all the maps you fight on are the same 6-7 maps, and are split into several sections. Each section of the map does something specific, like it rains down hell on the other sectors or lets you fast travel to other sections. It's kind of interesting for the first few times you try it, but the more you play the more tired you'll likely be seeing the exact same few maps over and over every single mission. The only things that actually change are what kind of extra function the sections do and maybe sometimes you'll be blocked off from certain ones. So certain sectors that rain death on you will be locked off until near the end of the mission.
3 also has a more cel shaded look to all the mobile suits, while 1, 2, and reborn lean more towards a traditional representation of the mobile suits. You'd be better served looking up videos or something to see what I mean.

i've played them all and the only ones i enjoy are as follows
- warriors orochi 3
- dynasty warriors 4
and this one is conditional: fist of the north star ken's rage 1 and 2
I'm a massive, massive fist of the north star fan and i feel like if i wasn't that this would be a much worse game.
lots of people recommend 8. 8 is a very different game than 4 and, well, if i'm being honest i just want 4 but with more stuff to do and better graphics. i pretty much get upset by anything that isn't 4. even little changes like the changes to the bodyguards upsets me a lot.
warriors orochi 3 is much higher budget than the usual DW and has Team Ninja from ninja gaiden and dead or alive working on it a little. it's a very different game and even more cheezy than usual with a time travel plot. i love it. it's different enough from DW that it not being 4 doesn't piss me off.

I played up until the end of the Golden Age arc, and a little after it. You play as Griffith one or two times if I recall correctly, the rest of the entire game you play as Guts and only Guts. Mowing through the enemies in Berserk feels better than it does in other games, and Guts moveset is enjoyable, but it doesn't excuse playing as the same character for half the game. I've been told that you play as Guts for the entirety of the main story as well.

Samurai Heroes was actually really damn accurate to the japanese and had a solid voice cast surprisingly. But yeah Itsuno really knocks it of the park with these. Combining DMC gameplay with musou is a great idea. I've had Sumeragi for a while and I'm still discovering different moves with the characters such as combo links and square string features.

First impressions are good. Infinity Mode benefits from the ability to choose what sorts of objectives you want to do, and promoting officers is expanded out just right to really give the officer types distinct differences on top of being able to swap sacred treasures.
It's also almost as expensive as the base game, but so far feels worth it.

I pirated it solely because of Hayabusa. I like it so far, part of it because my fucking nigger Tadakatsu Honda is the first character you get to play as but also because I like the way they handle Samurai/Dynasty characters, and I dig the magic system. And unlike Spirit of Sanada it's not a fun game hamstringed by retarded cutscenes and 30 minutes of chasing after some dumb blonde, then loading a cutscene and chasing after her again, then loading a cutscene and chasing after her again, or shitty exploration missions. A bit on the easy side though.

I'd like to get a feel for the characters then I'll try out the other modes. I imagine infinite mode is like DW5's xtreme mode? Also I'd like to know if Ryu Hayabusa has any story significance in any of the modes.
Also I wonder why they never copied that DW5 mode where you play some grunt officer under a character and then rise through the ranks, get their weapons, get the chance to double cross your officer, defect or even triple-cross the ones who want you to defect and eventually culminates in your faction winning the war.

Hyrule warriors just makes me want to go play dynasty warriors again. I can't easily make out lieutenants on the map, gates will not open until the story says they should even in free mode, way too linear.

Ryu was added with the Ultimate expansion, so he only shows up with plot in Ultimate's story mode section. Infinite Mode plays more like a well structured version of WO3U's Gauntlet Mode. You have to challenge a series of towers with different objectives while getting characters from story mode along the way.
I miss Destiny Mode too.

- Samurai Warriors (1) is one of the best. Techno+Japanese instruments OST, crazy-ass but believable characters, you can create own characters and doing so even is a minigame of its own
- Dynasty Warriors 8 - combines some of the best of previous DWs
- Dynasty Warriors 4 - the best DW in the series. Level weapons, alternate story paths, create own characters, best OST Metal+Chinese instruments
- Fire Emblem Warriors is one of the best as well from what I've heard, but can't confirm since not a console player. Same for Hyrule Warriors.
- One Piece Pirate Warriors series is not bad either if you're into OP
- The Berserk game isn't bad either, but somehow gets far faster to higher amounts of HP for enemies and you really just want to delve deeper into the sinister atmosphere it builds e.g. by the tower-like mode and the story. The gore is sadly not nearly as good as it could be.
- Warriors Orochi series is most fun when you've already played through some or all of the SW and DW games as its a fictional what-if mixup of the two.
- Gundam Warriors has completely different atmosphere to it than the other warriors games imo. Really great OSTs too.
Warriors All-Stars is a horrible game, avoid at all cost.
Apparently the same goes for DW9.
Arslan bored me, but it's not like I knew the anime.

I've only played SW1 and Spirit of Sanada, but I believe this OST direction remains for the mainline SW games(Spirit of Sanada was more DW rock), at least that seems to be the case from what little I've heard of SW4's ost.
It's such a cool theme for your soundtrack too. The part 50 seconds in embed related is very space jam. Are there any games outside of the SW series that have a sengoku-techno OST?
Also what's the difference between SW and Sengoku Basara? Considering the platforms the latter is on I cannot play them just as of yet but I'd like to keep them in mind once I can emulate.

Samurai Warriors is more about good positioning during battle to not get surrounded, as you're a major, but fragile part of a larger strategic whole.
Sengoku Basara is more literally being a one man army, with emphasis on enormous hit counts, learning very particular character mechanics, and in the latest game, getting a high score.
