Let's have a good old-fashioned Akinator thread. If you don't know what that is, it's a game that tries to guess whatever character you're thinking of by asking you several questions and then trying to use that information to find the character you're thinking about. It's been around for years (the pic of the Serb result is from 2013 and it's been around long before that) and it has a huge database of possible characters, real and fictional. There used to be threads about it on /v/ where people tried to stump it and see if their particular obscure character was in the system. Here's what I found today:

>as did "The guy from who trades you Myau for a laconian pot" from Phantasy Star I
>it doesn't seem to have /v/ as a character
>it does have Sonichu
>it knows a lot of furry porn characters and some of the pictures are actual porn

Okay, he did get Paul Denton after 75 or so questions, after wrongly guessing some SCP foundation character and some other completely off-base thing. To be fair I couldn't answer a few of his questions. I tried to get him to guess Mentor from EYE, but after 25 questions he guessed fucking Rimanah instead. This despite one of the questions being "does he have a mustache" which I answered "probably" since his mask, at least, has one. Rimanah's mask has no mustache. So that was creepy in being just barely wrong. Maybe I'll try a touhou after this.

I always wondered if it looked at the web cache or browser history to guess the character. Sometimes, when I am not 100% sure how the character looks like, I open a tab to search on google images just to be sure, and in those cases Akinator guesses almost instantly.

The ever-expanding list of characters reduces the algorithm's ability to decisively nail one in particular. Differential reasoning can be very fast when each decision is applied unilaterally (there are many characters with red hair, there are many characters who are over six feet tall, there are not nearly as many characters who are over six feet tall and who have red hair) but every similar subject added to the list is one more chance for overlap.
Old Akinator would "read your mind" and nail the character fast or fail entirely.
New Akinator almost always has an answer unless you answer questions wrong to be a dick or search for something overly niche/specific.

If you think about it, it doesn't actually have to reflect reality or elicit correct answers from players. It just has to get you to give answers that most other players would give when thinking about the thing. I just tried "Terran Republic Soldier," which it got right. But it asked me about a jetpack. Most TR soldiers (PS2) don't use jetpacks, but some do. There's no "some" answer, so I gave it "probably not." The answer is nonsense, but as long as most other people thinking of a TR soldier would reason the same way then it can still guess correctly.

3 for 3 fails from the Atelier Dusk series, all main characters. Tried Escha (title character), failed. Tried Nio (sister of the main character in Ayesha), failed, finally tried Ayesha herself, figuring the title character of the first game in the series would work. At least for Ayesha he guessed two different Atelier girls (Totori and Rorona).
