>Activision shareholders call

>Only positive spin Blizzard has is "our subscriber base is split between wow classic and battle for azeroth about equally"

So the options:

1 - The userbase of BfA has fallen so low the WoW Classic userbase now rivals it

2 - Half the playerbase is subscribed while having no interest in the version with the cash shop selling expansion prepurchases

3 - WoW Classic is as successful as Retail, you think you want it, but wait, fuck.

and thats it. Overwatch is dead. Hearthstone is dead. Diablo is dead. Starcraft is dead and WoW is entirely on life support from their new primary market "in the east". Did you ever think dying through irrelevance would be how they would go just like Valve did as a game dev?

Bad comparison because Valve has Steam and Dota 2 and CS:GO. Valve is also independent.

Blizzard sucks ass because the people, that made Blizzard what it was in the 90s, left the company. The trannies that work at Blizzard now just have a bunch of IPs that they are shitting on.

Get ready for it to become a monthly franchise for the next two years.

I would think since they're enticing their COD mobile game to China. You gotta be a commie bootlicker to even sell anything in China. As with Bioware and Bethesda before, Blizzard is a shell of their former self since the actual talent left long ago to form their own studios or go to better companies.

The only reason it had a steep decline is because IE completely ignored the problems with the game in favor of a new audience, completely throwing their vets under the bus. Not to mention nuModern Warfare is designed around tActIcool gameplay compared to the usual faster paced, which was fucking retarded. This only appealed to newfags and people who prefer to camp. Not to mention the balance issue, since there is 3 or 4 extremely good guns that very few people dont use.

The biggest fucking thing though is forcing Skilled based matchmaking on normal lobbies, you never notice any sort of progression of your skill, because if you do well you will be paired against people who are better then you everytime, then get shat on. People have been bitching about it since day one, but IW just hand waves it saying "We will design the game how WE want it, not you (the people who have been loyal for fucking years)". Its a fucking shitshow.

Why DO they keep leaving massive gaps in the "lore" of their recent games? Is it publisher pressure, or do they just keep getting bored and moving onto something else before fleshing everything out completely?

I'd like Elden Ring to be good. I havent read any of GRRM's work, but my understanding is he's kind of a hack, trying (and failing) to be a modern JRR Tolkien. I hope all the story bits arent full retard.

Few companies deserve this fate more than Blizzard. No one there has any idea why anyone liked Warcraft, Starcraft, or Diablo to begin with. I can't imagine a company more removed from its fanbase that still somehow has gullible idiots who show up for their annual conference, where they either shit directly on their fanbase or give them a sliver of hope to set up for shitting on them.

I think they see it as "you are seeing a established world late in its development and this is only a few very rough days during a prolonged shitshow thats taken at least years to get to this state" so leaving it like that adds a 'stranger in a strange land' element.

Honestly its why Demon's Souls feels way more effective than Dark for me. In Demon's you are a hero braving the deep fog spreading from boletaria over the world driving people insane and summoning demons. You can stop this if you are stronk enough. In Dark Souls the parties over and you are just putting up the chairs.

Listened to the call today hoping to hear about W3F "…it's been a tough week" LEL, but you're being a bit disingenuous, OP. Blizzard's MAUs have been mostly flat with a small downward trend over the last year, but not a cataclysmic drop. Also, CoD Mobile gave the CoD franchise a considerable bump in Q4.

You are right, though, that their numbers are mostly flat and they only have CoD, WoW Classic, and some shit from King that's also declining keeping them up. But, just like EA, they make a fucking fortune on 'net bookings' (read: MTX) and that's what is keeping their lights on.

What's most concerning if you're ActiBlizz is that you have no new franchises. No new blood. Overwatch 2 sure as fuck isn't going to reinvigorate that franchise, they lost Bungie and have no looter shooter in their slate, they have no mega popular 3rd party IPs like EA does with Star Wars or Square-Enix with Marvel, and they have no huge battle royale game. If people lose interest in CoD, they're totally fucked.

Another interesting point is that they're still spending millions on 'restructuring' costs from last year's 'we posted big profits, but we're laying off 900 people anyway' shitshow. That and morale is super low at Blizzard, especially with the WC3R stupidity.

Really, anyone could have told you it wouldn't work out. The actively refused to make things good for short term gains at all costs. Thing is, a satisfied consumer base, while in an incredibly temporary sense doesn't generate a ton of profit, they will, in time produce more profit than the declines from short term chasing.

You can only short term chase if you're in a business you intend to close short term, and a games studio isn't one of them.

People TODAY still will buy diablo 2 battlechests and diablo 3 is lucky if it has a major sale once in a while, that should really clue you into some important things of note.

What? You make a bunch of money short term and jump ship before it tanks too much, still leaving you with profit. If you make an additional 1 million a year by cutting corners for 10 years and lose 2 million on the 11th year after people get fed up and you're still up 8 million. The people running it can just jump to into another industry and do the same thing to it.

Keep in mind the decline is just in revenue, not loss of actual money. Operating income for Blizzard was $454 million according this report, which is not losing money on an investment. They are worried that the revenue is going down because modern businesses value growth so much.

It's interesting how many games are ruined by this and how many game devs are content to let it happen. Dead by Daylight is a good example; I actually don't mind the arc of the game and have had fun playing it, but going up against an entire premade team which obliterates the balance and completely ruins the flow of the round means that it's a fool's errand to even load it up nowadays, and the devs refuse to do anything about it because as long as people are playing, people are paying. It negatively impacts the lifespan of the game though and I suspect that in both cases it'll eventually end up being the death of the game itself.

>Why DO they keep leaving massive gaps in the "lore" of their recent games?

Did they all the time. I dont' remember the specific example I had from Demon Souls, but I do remember THIS thing in Dark Souls.

Short answer: DLC hook. Long answer: more areas that were cut off from the game.

There's an eceleb I watch on youtube that got to meet and tour From's office, and talk to some of them. From what he gleaned, there's a small team of "writers" or rather, lore-makers that come up with a lot of shit. Map designers will place most elements in before being told "this shit won't make it, cut it out".

But some of the cut stuff would leave a gap (you can't exactly cutout the whole infestation from sekiro since it's nearly half the enemies) so they cut as much as possible while leaving the rest. Then they patch it up with "Oooohhh, it's a mystery!" schtick.

I don't exactly mind it, but yeah, it naturally leaves people wanting more.

>I dont' remember the specific example I had from Demon Souls

How the shit do you forget the broken archstone.or is is something actually obscure The amount of leftovers from it is immense, its pretty much 80% of demon souls unused content.

While cut content is clearly what they recycle in regards to DLC, generally its very clearly loose interpretations. While lore can be left open ended and easy to slap into a DLC, cut areas from souls games tend to not really be an intentional cut from the looks of things.

fun fact, the whole Kosm thing in bloodborne is because they accidentally used an early name in a way that was vague enough to retcon into new character.

Two of their recent games being a game that was in dev for fucking agesbloodborne and a game that seeming was forcefully changed to be just another entry in its seriesDS3 being main recent examples is probably why their recent lore seems like a bunch of spaghetti.

This makes me wonder if Fromsoft even knows that Lore Bibles are a thing. Shit, I didn't mind that most of the world settings are inconsistent, but FromSOft has a tendency to do the Japanese thing of hiding their dysfunction behind a facade of "I totally did that on purpose". They did the exact same thing with blighttown's choppy framerate by saying "We lowered the framerate to give you the feeling that your character doesn't want to be here, lol,".

The gameplay is fun, but the lore is such a cop-out.

Now, bloodborne's complete mess of a "story" finally makes sense.

<Let's make a game about victorian era europe using monsters and HP lovecraft, that would be fun!

>Okay, here's the cityscape, the forests near it, a river area, a lake, a university, a fishing village, some eldritch mountains, some tombs, and a whole load of other shit.

<This ain't gonna work, cut out the river, half the forest, the university, and the load of shit… but the tombs would be neat for some multiplayer shit, make it a randomly generated section! We can stuff all the unused bosses in there!

>Oh, okay.

<Hmmm… You know what, keep these specific university pieces. They look awesome- use it to link the secret slums with the near-final boss area, we could use "eldritch" as an excuse for why it happens.

>Oh, okay.

<Hmm… We need DLC, use the laboratory part of the university and spice it up with the gardens, use that ludwig dude, the hunter based off the waifu doll, and the fishing village content!

>Okay!

<Now, how are we gonna make the players cry like we did with demon's souls?

>Uhh… I don't know. Fight with the mentor dude?

<BRILLIANT!! Now how do we do that and tie everything together?

>How about just say it's all a dream?

<BRILLIANT!!

Still, I can't help cringe at the thought that fromsoft does mystery-box-tier shit with their storytelling, when Metal Wolf Chaos, of all things shows that they are fully capable of lore coherence.

> university pieces

Entering the Rom fight was such shit.

What's suposed to be conveyed is that you character falls on the reflection of the moon, thus semi-entering the fucking moon, the place where Rom has been hiding in.

Heck, there's a fuckload of story behind Rom and his part to play on the story, but all you get from that sequence was "Wow, there's a magic portal in the water to an empty white space and weird spider-larva thing in it!"

What they needed was a small corridor just before the fight, where you could see earth on the horizon to properly convey "Hey bucko, you're on the freaking moon!"

>it's all a dream

Carefull there, a "dream" in Bloodborne isn't the same as a dream in our world. They're pretty much parallel dimensions where character can (and frequently) find themselves trapped in. BUT, those parallel dimensions can also have an effect on the one's "bellow".

There's a proper chart showing how they're layered and how some were created (especially the Nightmare one's) but one of the fundamental tidbits is that the Yarhnam you normally see is Nightmare of normal Yarnham (what you'd call Real World). It was created by the unnatural plague ravaging the place and pretty much whisked and transformed Yharnam's residents into it, leaving the city empty. Your character arrives, seeking a cure for his condition and by signing the contract, enters the Yharnam Nightmare. You are unable to leave because of said contract until you fullfill it.

That's one of the nice touches in the DLC: when you get near the fishing village, you can see one other nightmare in the distance, bellow you, and when you approach the fishing village properly, you can also see what look like masts of ships in the "sea". But looking closer, you'll notice those are actually the minarets and spikes of Nightmare Yharnam's churches and buildings.

>make it a randomly generated section

That was a fucking shame. All that content screamed "make me a second DLC, let me be a full fledged area, PLEASE"

Fun fact about your example, Ludwig was probably based on a early version of Amelia; both exist in a shitty dungeon and guard a corpse basically.Amelia was also really late game, so i can't imagine it was the same boss.

The doll was pretty clearly meant to the queen of the vilebloods, Maria is clearly a retcon thing like Kosm. We have access to most of the nonsense cut content of Bloodborne and basically none of it made it.

They reuse concepts, but not directly usually unless its stuff they can mention in passing; like the stuff for DS1. The fishing village seems to be based on Cainhurst which clearly got a lobotomy in development.

As a really silly fact about the mentor thing, he clearly is two characters merged into one, originally he just kinda appeared and burnt shit. While the wheelchair oldman was just friendly.

The boss model even still reflects this mostly, they have totally different faces.

Well, considering the guy will never ever finish his shitty series, he's a good fit for fromsoft.

As for the gaps in the lore, I think it's pure laziness combined with the understanding that the people who play their games will eat up anything they give them and make mountains out of moehills for every scrap of poorly thought out lore bits.

Perhaps. There certainly is such thing as "too big to be allowed to fail". Their next trick will be to get bailed out somehow. Maybe the Chinese will buy Blizzard outright.

> just the top layer in the nightmare

On the contrary, the lowest level. From that level you can reach higher. In theory, if you could keep climing nightmares upon nightmares, acending from one to another (like Kosm managed to do) you would eventually reach the Elder Gods up there.

The thing is: the higher you go, the more fucked up everything is around you.

I still think that the Hunter's Dream is one of the Highest Dreams in that world. It's the reason the Moon Presence manifests itself there, since it's the closest to his home (the moon itself).

You are just inverting the direction. He describes the "top layer" as the surface level, where you dig down to reach deeper in. Maybe it's wrong in how the lore defines the cosmology, I don't know I don't own a pisspoor, but functionally it's the same meaning.

>Did you ever think dying through irrelevance would be how they would go

I was in college when they merged with Activision. I expected them to have a sudden explosive failure. I was naive at the time, because over 10 years ago, I never considered that people would buy shit game after shit game solely on the fact that it has Blizzard's name on it. I never expected that Blizzard would slowly lose all of their talent, nor did I have any idea that companies were stocking up on employees who had no talent or love for the craft. They're just dying at an agonizing pace, but it looks like we're finally reaching critical mass.

When I was a naive faggot, I applied to work at Blizzard. They called me back and talked to me about it. Later I found out that I didn't get it, and I've never been so fucking grateful in my life.

>>16833696

>I sure as hell did after the shitty updates.

You know, it's funny that you say that. Battle for Azeroth was so popular that if the expansion and the updates were actually good, they could have bounced back. They were given a golden opportunity by their marketing staff, and they decided to release an expansion that has bled players so fast that you'd think it was made by a studio owned by Cliffy B.

Yeah, I see your point.

It's actually kinda fucky, and you can't really tell sometimes. Like the Hunterr's Dream has something that resemble the Arch Trees off in the distance. That would make it the lowest possible, since Arch Trees are at the bottom of the world. But on all other accounts, it's above all other dreams. One funny aspect of this is that when your character "dies", he goes "up" to the hunter dream. Many other characters also go up, to their own "Dream". Until they can't escape it anymore, and it's a nightmare (hence why the Hunter's Dream changes into the Hunter's Nightmare too).

The implication of this is that your character suffers a sort of "death" at the begining of the game, and that's what takes him to Nightmare Yharnam.

It really pisses me off when people deride the ending because "OH, it was just dream, how clichê and boring!". And they don't fucking get that Dreams have this wild fucking concept: they're Dreams, but they're also real.

Shit, there's one section of the game where there's shit from the Hunter's Nightmare falling down on a layer bellow. There's an NPC (one larva-girl, I believe) that also falls from above. It's not a stretch to imagine something falling from a Nightmare into the Real World: Yharnam proper.

It's one of the very few things From actually fucking nailed it, a perfect "Dreamlands" or "Dream Quest for Unknown Kadath" take on the matter if you will.

And it's the one retards most often miss.

Call of Duty was at it's best during BO3 and Infinite Warfare. I say this as a jaded faggot who hated everything after Black Ops 2 for one reason or another. Call of Duty was never good, we were just addicted to the loop Anon. The extra movements options were the first and only time CoD ever seemed to actually improve as a skill based shooter and those games were lazy as fuck and bad for other reasons. There is a reason things peaked at BO2.

>>16833909

Hey, retard.

It was never about money, it was about influence and corruption. They will sell shit at a loss just to push pozz, and they are subsidized by even more powerful people.

>>16834243

Didn't Sony just lump their game development management under one man, and set the way for games getting censored before it even comes to localization? There is pozzed shit (more so than the poorly animated moeblob waifu shitshow extravaganza it's become today) slowly creeping its way into your hobbies. It's not just dubbers, you have shit like Boku no Hero, a mainstream success with blacked characters now. Netflix is going balls deep on corrupting anything they touch.

We've got to be vigilant.

>and thats it. Overwatch is dead. Hearthstone is dead. Diablo is dead. Starcraft is dead and WoW is entirely on life support from their new primary market "in the east".

They have brought that entirely upon themselves. Blizzard has a history shit decisions since WoW came out. At least. But back when everyone was playing Warcraft 3 they had a very good reputation, almost untouchable. They had a few really good ips and to their fanbase they were almost like the Apple or Disney of games. By now they have successfully ruined all of those ips. When they make a sequel to one of their games it's always something you don't really want to play and overwatch is and always was a total joke, hyperactive gameplay and shit mechanics, like a shitty Unreal Tournament clone but made for women. Anyone who has ever played a real fps, even anyone who has played one of those fps you might as well play with a controller can only laugh about that.

I think when it comes to Blizzard it will suffice to keep on playing D2 and Warcraft 3 sometimes. Classic WoW doesn't seem like a bad idea but who has time for this shit nowadays?

Valve got greedy and tried to make the game more like league by adding more safety nets for stupid players, shit mechanics to pad out tournament length and removing the games edge. Things like raindrops, fairy fires, fountains in the jungle, buffs to health, nerfing really powerful situational abilities like Rubick being able to throw people on cliffs, adding more gold on the map, adding way more comeback gold, etc. There was a period when the heroes were so neutered that heroes still ported from dota 1 to dota 2 started becoming OP. Pheonix, Earth Spirit, Winter Wyrven, Oracle. All got nerfed into the ground because of how brain dead the game became. Bit them in the ass rightfully so.

You had healthy growth up until 2016 when 7.00 dropped. You see it gave a big short-term boost to the player base followed by a consistent decline. It use to float around 1 million players and now it's dropped down to 600k. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the remaining accounts are bots grinding to be able to play ranked for boosting. I know that's the case for their other games like CS:GO and TF2. Compare that to league which almost has 8 million players now.

Didn't Blizzard fire like 800+ people in 2019? If their cash flow is stagnating even after getting rid of 800 people, their financials must be very bleak. They don't have any big releases coming up (Diablo 4 is basically it, and that's years away), so I don't see how they can stay afloat during this drought. WC3R probably didn't make much money after all the refunds/chargebacks, even with it having zero budget.
