My personal favorite is Ninja Warriors. Still surprised there's no robo-porn of Kunoichi. I also like Undercover Cops and Robocop.

I remember good times playing Streets of Rage with my brother back when it came out. That was great.

I would pick Blaze and use the infinite combo as a setup and my brother would finish 'em off.

I'm tentatively looking forward to SOR4, but I fully expect it to be pozzed out the ass.

Probably the Capcom D&D beat'em ups. If only someone would make something in the same vein but with a more open world like in River City Ransom I could have something new to wile away the hours. I know that the series River City was based off of continued and made a fantasy themed entry but it doesn't look like it incorporates all those classic tabletop elements into the gameplay.

Final Fight 3 and The Peace Keepers are my favorites. FF3 is pretty solid fun, especially if you're playing as Guy who gets to run around canceling his combo into itself, and spamming his ridiculous fireball everywhere. TPK has a few features I really like, such as throwing dudes into spike pits and other traps. You can play as a robot with a gun-hand, and the main character can transform like Goku and start flying around, punching everybody across the screen. Multiple endings and branching pathways, too.

I've been meaning to seriously try and maybe 1cc some arcade games, Denjin Makai II, for one. Has a whole bunch of characters and mechanics and combos and some weird, quasi-kusoge aesthetics, not to mention you can play as a titmonster. Sengoku 3, Knights of the Round, and the D&D games were awesome. Alien vs Predator and Night Slashers look really cool, but I've never tried those.

From the 3d era: Fighting Force 64, Dynamite Cop, and Zombie Revenge. DC was tons of fun. The other two not so much. I can't imagine replaying any of these without a second player.

>Still surprised there's no robo-porn of Kunoichi

I hear that. It's rare to find remixes of the soundtrack, which is also a shame. TNW is pretty awesome all around, but I need that extra 0.5 dimension like most others in this genre have.

>Any good upcoming Beat 'em up?

My feeling is that this genre has been subsumed by others since around 2002. You have God of War, DMC, and "spectacle fighters" like that, as well as metroidvanias, which more or less do what a "beat 'em up" is supposed to do, except with a bunch of extra stuff like skill unlocks, nonlinear exploration, etc. I begin to feel like the genre is defined by its deficiencies— something is only be a "beat em up" if it has failed to be anything else.

Is Yakuza a beat em up? It has a lot of the aesthetic touches you would expect, like street fighting, but it also has a lot of RPG stuff added in so I guess it's an "action-adventure" instead. It's not an "arcade" experience, which I guess might be the crucial difference.

I 1cc'd Golden Axe for the first time the other day. Absolutely babby's arcade 1st beat em up (except Double Dragon 1) but an old favorite. Been playing a bit of the GA sequels, Splatterhouse 3, and working on Captain Commando… like to 1cc that some day but I doubt it's happening even though it's supposed to be easier than most other Capcom beat em up.

Night Slashers is awesome.

I really love all of capcom's CPS beat 'em ups. My favorites are both Dungeons & Dragons games, Aliens vs Predator and Battle Circuit. The Punisher is also fantastic with a great vatiety of moves and weapons. It's kind of crazy how many classics they were pumping out in such a short period. Capcom's golden era for sure. A shame it had to end. On consoles the best ones are Return of Double Dragon and Double Dragon 2. 3d would be Dynamite Cop and God Hand.

Recently played that Jidaigeki Kunio game that came out on Famicom that we didn't get in the US. Sadly, it was garbage. Instead of playing like RCR, you have to wander the whole game looking to encounter enemies and the game just ends after you beat up enough enemies. There's like this weird little mini map that shows where the enemies are located and they move around every time you switch maps.

Stay Cool Kobayashi-san was some Arc Sys b-team bullshit. Its music is great but sadly fucking mega-encoded so it's impossible to rip and its VA work is "good" once you get past the fact that literally EVERYTHING is voice lined and thus that can sometimes lead to a big mess but its English translation makes it feel like it was just run through jewgle translate.

Its gameplay is just mashing basic attack buttons and occasionally an extra button, or abusing the MC's i-frames, And in your first playthrough the purple boss is just bullshit that'll suck you in and replenish its health.

Then there's the trash heap River City Girls, with its eye-burning pastel bullshit. The pixel art's okay, and the art is cute-ish, but it feels like Double Dragon Neon with a splash of Kunio paint that's been splashed over by OCs given a similar name.

The only decent nu-Kunio game is Rival Showdown but it's stuck on the 3DS with next to no advertising, it's like RCR but way more stylized and a slightly better fighting system.

But really, the best Kunio beat-em-up is either Shin Kunio on SNES or RCR EX on GBA.

I agree with >>16832657 though, Fight 'N Rage is a really fun and simple beat-em-up. Really easy to get into but can get challenging.

Yeah, but most of those are sports games, though I guess they also count as beat-em-up since you just beat your opponents to death there too.

And Code Shifter's a platformer/not-Smash Bros ripoff with enough crack smoked to think hiring the goddamn Tangled animator was a good idea. they couldn't even be assed to update their copyright in the title screen Point being, neither of these are exactly beat-em-ups.

The good thing about that Kunio-kun collection though is that it reduces lag and improves AI in general apparently, so that could be fun.

Speaking of shitty localizations, The Ninjawarriors US release lost the sexy ninja enemy, Final Fight on the SNES turned Poison into a tranny because hitting women would be wrong, lol and at least one of the Streets of Rage games had a few pixels worth of Blaze upskirt. Always pirate everything. When those markets grow, they always turn against their own consumers.
