Mojang just release their first 1.16 snapshot and it includes some interesting shit.

The most interesting change of all?

A NEW ORE THAT IS ABOVE DIAMOND

Netherite is a new ore that can be found by mining Ancient Debris at the lower depths of The Nether. You can then smelt Ancient Debris into Netherite Scrap, and then combine 4 Nether Scrap and 4 Gold Ingots to make a Netherite Ingot.

Netherite Effects include:

- Netherite Items float in lava

- Higher Enchantment Value than Diamond (But lower than Gold)

- Faster Speed and More Durability than Diamond

- Higher Armour Toughness and Durability

- High Knockback Resistance

Never thought I'd live to see the day they add something stronger than Diamond. What do you think, /v/?

Yeah, 1.16 is the Nether Update. Honestly, NetherEX adds the Soulsand Biome shit that was in the update. The Crimson and Warped forests are unique though I guess.

Took them fucking long enough to make the Nether more than just a wasteland that you go for travel and blaze rods.

Minecraft has so much fucking wasted potential tbh. Terraria has so many weapons and bosses and goals to constantly work towards, and Minecraft has the same gameplay loop than can be done in a day. Once you beat the Ender Dragon, there's basically nothing to do that makes it worthwhile and it just turns into Creative mode but you have to get all the building materials yourself.

I really wish those tards at Mojang would just be like Notch and make an actual game with actual fun features instead of worrying about shit like

>animal safety

>keeping the game simple

>>16832342

Eh, you still have till probably Summer until they actually do the Nether Update. But yeah, nobody knows how the Nether shit is going to work, be it regenerating the whole world or only having it be generated in new chunks.

First they'd actually need the gameplay mechanics for that to even make sense. There are all of what, 2 fucking ranged weapons Minecraft? Magic? The point of the branched ore tiers in Terraria was to buff specific job classes. Minecraft really doesn't have that, you run up to things and beat them to death with a sword or shoot them with arrows.

>Hey guys, new content!

>it's another tier of ore!

>but actually, you need Gold and Diamonds anyway because we couldn't think of a way to make Gold stuff worth it nor did we want to make Diamonds useless

Fucking hell, why is this being praised as something good? There's a gazillion of mods that do nothing except add "diamond tier + 1, +2, +3" etc with new Ore to mine with the previous tier required, each progressively better than the previous and often even starting after Diamond too.

It's the dumbest most boring and easy content you can add to the game, new ores and armor\tools\weapons that use it, to the point that amateurs flood Curse with their "epic mineral!" mods.

Why the fuck would literal treadmill gear be anything positive ever?

What about cutting this shit out and making different materials better for different stuff and not just better than the previous tier?

Kinda like they tried with Gold having higher enchanting cap but fucking it up because of the terrible durability.

Maybe add drawbacks too that make higher tiers a more specialized and better version with it's own weaknesses and strengths.

For instance, Leather Armor makes you sprint and jump higher as well as increasing your move speed when sneaking but has lower armor than average.

Iron Armor has higher physical protection, but lowers your sprint speed to below average.

Gold Armor gives you better trades with villagers and has higher enchanting capability with the same durability as Iron but less protection than Leather.

Diamond gives you a bit less protection than Iron but Magic Resistance innately while also reducing your sprint speed and making you glow (good for utility, bad for stealth)

There, Leather armor for fast skirmishers that won't take much damage and move fast, Iron armor for front line when you're expected to be dealt a lot of damage and hold your ground, Gold armor for peace times and utility and Diamond Armor instead of Iron for when you expect to face anyone capable of dealing magic damage.

Want another tier with nether ore? What about something that gives you fire resistance and it's more effective if you're on fire, making it a dangerous tool\weapon\armor to use and forcing you to end combat or use it sparingly to avoid killing yourself?

Why is it acceptable that just Diamonds+ is good enough, for fuck's sake, especially considering the crazy shit that many mods have brought to the table already.

My point is that the game engages you easily when you're crafting tools and going from one to the other but as soon as you get diamonds it immediately grinds down to a halt.

So what if the nether had a wheat variant that required a diamond hoe to harvest, that you could craft into new tools to find even better materials and so on?

Every new level should have some progressively weirder tool progression but still revolving on a "see item, try to mine it" system.

I'm so fucking disappointed in Bedrock Edition tbh. It's a massive improvement when it comes to performance because it isn't written in a shit language, but Microsoft just managed to fuck it up.

Pros:

>Extremely Good Performance

>Upcoming official RTX Support

>Does have mod support

>You can move Chests with pistons

>Controller Support (if for some reason you're into that)

Cons:

<Has Shitty Redstone

<You can't use Custom Skins when crossplaying with people on other platforms, meaning it's basically on useful in Single Player

<You can make a custom skin with the character creator, but you have to spend money to buy shit like sunglasses for your character

<Even if you buy a skin, it might be locked to your platform (Ex: Every Mario Mash-Up Pack skin) so you can't use it in multiplayer

<Mods do exist, but only for platforms where you can fuck with the files, otherwise you pay for them

<No Hardcore Mode

<Gets Updates Later than Java

<Still has features from Java missing

<Annoying ass Store icon in the menu

Basically, Microsoft jew'd it as much as they possibly could.

Bedrock runs in C++, which is already something that helps performance. On top of that, SEUS shaders is a software solution to Raytracing, and isn't a hardware solution like RTX cards. RTX cards have hardware that's specially designed to handle Ray-Tracing and keep games running well.

That sounds like a terrible idea because of what >>16833538 said. Adding new dimensions will just make the game less coherent if they're all bland and void of content. Add your ideas into the already existing dimensions before you think about making more of them.

That's what I think the game needs tbh. But have the dimensions actually have reasons to explore them except "Go kill some fireniggers in a spawner and take their shit to go to the next dimension and maybe get some nether warts and soul sand for potions" or "Spend an hour looking for a single structure with wings in it"

That or just ripoff Terraria and make caves deep as fuck like in the Cubic Chunks mod and have the progression be based around bosses.

>>16833538

I think the Nether Update might actually be interesting if they add more than just what they're adding right now. Their goal is to make the Nether a place you can actually live in. While I would love a Nether as fleshed out as the Overworld, I can't expect that from Mojang.

The thing is that Mojang absolutely refuses to add anything to the overworld that is the least bit dangerous or worthy to explore. The only hope I have to be able to go on any kind of adventure is for them to add various new dimensions with all the horrors and wonders therein. Everything does need to be made at lest as interesting as the new Nether or otherwise it's pointless though.

As far as we know, his is it regarding new biomes for the nether. The red tee biome will also get villages of piglins, who you can barter with without an interface, and the hoglins still need to have their AI implemented but I wouldn't expect more content. It has wood, and you can survive off hoglin meat, so the nether is "livable".

If we're operating on what Mojang is willing or likely to do, then we can just forget about every new idea because they're sure as hell not going to add any of it.

There's infinite ways you could make the current dimensions more interesting though, and many already exist in mods.

Twilight Forest has tons of ideas and things that could be added in an overworld dimension. Biomes o Plenty has plenty of ideas for adding variety in all dimensions. Roguelike Dungeons and Gravestone mod have a lot more interesting dungeon designs than anything in vanilla. Artifacts mod has special randomly generated items that could make exploring pre-generated structures a lot more interesting, especially if you make them much more rare, it would be exciting to find them. Deadly World has all kinds of hazards and traps that spawn in the world. Glenn's Gases completely changes how you approach digging around underground. Special Mobs introduces interesting variations of current mobs that need to be approached differently.

They should just bite the bullet and rewrite the engine to support cubic chunks though. It would unlock so much more potential for the game both in vanilla generation and in modding. If you wanted to integrate Aether, you could make it so that past a certain elevation, all blocks except Aether blocks slide off the edges of other blocks and fall like sand so you can't stack them easily.

They did admit that they fucked up really badly in some way with Terraria: Otherworld, but they're not very open about the details of exactly what happened.

That, and everything hints that the decision to make 1.4 the final update was the result of a radical change of plans sometime during 2019. It does make you wonder how well Re-Logic is doing at all…

And that's still in no small part a legitimate fuckup on Re-Logic's part, isn't it? If you're going to entrust your flagship brand to another company (already a fuckup in of itself, depending on how you look at it), the least you could do is keep a close eye on what they're doing with it (frequent status reports, etc.) and keep the fuckers on a sufficiently tight schedule. That 's how you get things done. And from what Re-Logic has been willing to tell the public, it seems that they failed in all those aspects.

>but I do wonder if it has anything to do with the state of it. Poor guys.

All the signs are pointing to 'yes, it totally does'. They're trying to salvage the situation, and if the lack of updates since 2017 is anything to go by, it's not going smoothly.

There's still talk about Terraria 2, too, and I'm guessing that they're banking everything on that one in order to make up for the premature failure of Otherworld. Them funneling all their resources to Terraria 2 certainly would explain a lot of things.

They were guys that produced the console versions of the game. Otherworld was supposed to be kind of an spinoff as well. The problem isn't that they were destroying the IP, it was that they didn't do anything, they were pouring money into it and it went nowhere. Seeing how they actually did console/mobile versions of games, I don't see why they wouldn't be trusted. I'm not saying they are not at fault for not keeping control, but the other guys are pieces of shit.

They have released updates for the console and mobile versions, though.

It would undermine Journey's End. It wouldn't make sense, they should have released Journey's End as soon as possible and then jump to Terraria 2. Otherworld was supposed to fill the gap of time between 2 and the end of 1, after all.

It would be better if Netherite garbage-tier name had effects that changed your playstyle in additon to higher armor.

I'm not a gamedev so don't expect me to suggest anything good, but examples would be:

>You have higher health while on fire

>you become 'undead' while in the armor, having all the traits that undead have

>it has base diamond level about allows you to boost your abilites (health, mining speed, etc) by consuming coal, this effect functions like a furnace

Becoming 'undead' while wearing the armour would be a pretty cool trait, really.

I reckon the pros would be something like:

- can't drown

- can't be poisoned

- no hunger/exhaustion (i.e. can keep running forever)

- potions of harming heal you (so witches can't really do shit against you anymore)

And the cons:

- no natural healing

- healing potions harm you

- can't eat anymore

- Smite now works on you (could be fun in PvP…)

Alright, here's how it goes.

1) Chop Wood

2) Make a Wooden Pickaxe to mine Stone

3) Make a Stone Pickaxe to find Iron Ore and mine it

4) Smelt Iron Ore in a Furnace for Iron Ingots

5) Make an Iron Pickaxe

6) Spend however long down in caves looking for 3 Diamonds (Optional, if you just used buckets of Water and Lava to make a portal you can skip this step, 7, and 8)

7) Make a Diamond Pickaxe

8) Mine 10-14 Obsidian, then find Gravel and mine it repeadeatly until you get Flint.

9) Make a Nether Portal and light it with a Flint and Steel

10) Find a Nether Fortress in the Nether

11) Kill Blazes and get their rods to make Blaze Powder

12) Kill enough Endermen to get Ender Pearls and make Eyes of Ender (You'll have to kill 12, assuming the End Portal didn't spawn with any already placed in it, and the best case scenario of none of the eyes breaking when used to find the portal, and all of the Endermen you kill drop an Ender Pearl, which they only have a 50% chance to do. On top of this, they rarely spawn so get ready to spend nights in the Overworld or a bunch of time wandering the Nether to find them)

13) Use the Eyes of Ender to guide yourself to the Stronghold

14) Hope the Stronghold has a good amount of Eyes of Ender already inside it, if you don't have enough Eyes of Ender, go kill more Endermen

15) Activate the End Portal and go in

16) Kill the Ender Dragon

That's the gameplay loop for actually important shit. There are optional bosses, but they're not exactly the Ender Dragon. Along with all this shit, you can do things like Farming, Enchanting, Trading, Animal Breeding, ect. But they aren't essential progression parts of the game and are optional. As for post-game content, Outer End Islands are unlocked and you can spend hours in a wasteland to find a random structure and hope it has a ship so you can get Elytra, which are wings that allow you to fly.

After that? Nothing. Progression-Wise at least, all the other bosses and activities could've been done before this. It basically just becomes Creative Mode but you have to get every block yourself and you don't have True Flight. The game gets better if you have friends to play it with, but even me and my group of 7 friends got so bored we just reset after we killed the Ender Dragon and got enchanted god armor and such.

Yeah, the old way is just dragging them into the folder yourself.

I'd recommend downloading ATLauncher when it comes to mods, makes shit a lot easier.

You can have multiple instances of Minecraft, each with their own configuration and versions. Along with these instances, you can make Vanilla, Forge, or Fabric instances. You can also easily add mods by just searching them up in the "Add Mods" tab. It also has support for CurseForge modpacks.

https://atlauncher.com/downloads

If I had to give a recommendation for modpacks, try…

RLCraft (Decently hard realistic modpack, but the unfairness is fun)

Awakening (A modpack with over 280+ mods with a full guide to progressing though the entire game, really well fleshed out although it strays from Vanilla, it's also done in 1.7.10 so it doesn't have retarded NuCombat)

SevTech Ages (Another progression-based modpack, While it does have that retarded "Flint Tools" shit, I do find it fun)

CrackPack 3 (A modpack that bends RLCraft over and makes it into it's bitch, it's not realistic in the slightest and you'll die a lot, but it's still fun)

Invasion (A post-apocalyptic modpack with a very different gameplay loop and lots of structures to explore since the plot includes the fact that players before you have been there. Don't play in hardcore though, because you're guarenteed to die a few times because some enemies have shitboxes and the modpack itself even acknowledges it)

Survival islands used to mean something, now if you can even FIND a good survival island seed, there are now so many ways to beat hunger it's become pointless. Fishing used to suck absolute shit and now it's one of the most OP mechanics in the game. Also the fact that swimming is no longer CancerAids™ means that you're really not going to be stuck on an island no matter how far it is from the mainland.

One of the only updates I really like is the fact that boats don't get destroyed bumping into the shore or lilypads anymore. You used to have to treat boats like glass.

Also when the fuck did they get rid of monster attacks while you sleep? You used to have to build a secure home with a door or temporarily walled off entrance to put your bed in to sleep due to the chance zombies would wake you up and attack you, now I have no problem sleeping in an open-air bed, even 20 blocks away from active mobs.

Why the fuck did they nerf that? And these fucking phantom things are cancer Jesus fucking Christ.

>We missed out on updates to deserts and savannas for a fucking Taiga biome update

Savannas are fine tbh, shattered savannas are probably the most interesting looking biomes I've ever seen in the game, reminds me of the old days of Minecraft where you'd get the super crazy hills and giant open air caves, but these have greener grass. Deserts and tundras definitely do need an upgrade though ngl. Deserts are probably the ugliest and most useless biome in the game and the only thing they've gotten in 10 fucking years is sandstone and ruins/villages and reskinned sun-immune zombies.

There should be patches of coarse dirt throughout deserts that you can convert into soil with bonemeal, say 8 blocks of soil per bonemeal. That way you could do desert challenges and try converting it into arable land or something. As is, deserts are so fucking boring.

I can't really say much about tundras, I've barely experienced them. Polar bears and snow sounds about right though.

Chests inside of boats sounds kinda cool I guess, since you can row a boat and tow one behind you with a lead, correct? Coupled with the fact that boats aren't as fragile as glass anymore you could do some waterworld shit. They just need to give us a better way to place blocks on top of water besides lilypads.

>Survival islands

Remember how fuckhuge oceans used to be before 1.7.10 overhauled worldgen? Oceans used to cover three quarters of any normal map. You could legit get lost at sea back then. Nowadays you actually have to avoid any coasts or islands if you just wanna sail around for a bit.

>One of the only updates I really like is the fact that boats don't get destroyed bumping into the shore or lilypads anymore. You used to have to treat boats like glass.

Or the fucking squids, for that matter. Try sailing around in the middle of the ocean and then suddendly sinking because you hit a fucking squid. At least the lillypads were only a problem in swamps, and crashing your boat on the coast at least meant that you were near dry land. But those fucking squids were just unavoidable.

I remember. I used to think boats just naturally deteriorated over time because they'd randomly sink while sailing around, but actually it was squids sinking the boat. I used to carry around 2-3 spare boats just for times like this.

What they really need now since survival islands are essentially dead are official Skyblock seeds or floating island biomes you can have a chance of spawning on. They can have a chance of generating at or above cloud-level above any normal biome except shattered Savannah and extreme hills and would be about as rare as mushroom islands.

https://twitter.com/Minecraft/status/1226566473788874752?s=20

Cave Update acknowledged

The reason it isn't happening is because it's a recent request.

Mojang Shits on Bedcuck users

The Nether update won't have a beta on Bedcuck because users demanded there be no more updates until there's bug fixes, so they're doing those instead of doing a beta.

Less important shit:

Beds will continue to explode in The Nether

Yeah, they're still gonna continue The Nether. They'll also have an updated death message "This will never change because it is Intentional Game Design"

The Nether will not be reset

All your shit is safe, you'll just have to go generate new chunks.

Define "useful". Realtime raytracing is intended to provide a more accurate representation of lighting, reflections, shadows, etc. It is used for aesthetic purposes. If aesthetics are purely useless then just toggle the graphics off.

Here are some samples from what is currently the most ambitious implementation of RTX. I can't wait until AMD implements hardware-accelerated realtime raytracing so people might finally stop bashing the tech and pretending to be blind to its advantages.

Play with mods or play a different game all together, but since the game just updated, a bunch of mods are now obsolete unless if you revert to a previous version.

I won't guarantee that you will have any fun though, minecraft only got popular because it was new at the time and became trendy, the more you play it the more you realize how shallow, featureless and barebones of a game it actually is.

In this case "mods will fix it" is actually true, but in my opinion, putting sprinkles and sugar on a piece of shit wouldn't make it any more appetizing.

My point is that the screenshot is pretending like shaders make an earth shattering difference, even though the biggest difference is that everything's just brighter and more saturated. The biggest actual difference is of course water which was conveniently placed so that it fills literally 50% of the entire screenshot. But firstly water isn't what you'll spend all your time looking at in Minecraft, and secondly shaded water looks like shit when you pick it up or put it anywhere besides a flat sea/river. Also neither real time shadows nor flashy shiny water requires ray tracing.

Pic related is a more fair comparison, and also a comparison if you exclude water. All I did was change brightness and hues in the vanilla screenshot.

>A mirror facing a mirror should be infinite mirrors. RTX isn't revolutionary until it can do that.

The ray simulation has been cut back for performance so you're not going to be getting infinity mirrors until hardware exists that can push it in realtime. Also notice in image 3 and 4 >>16838011 that the metal chair is strongly reflecting the red carpet, but in the window reflections it isn't.

>>16838052

>Yeah it beats screenspace reflections

Of course, since traditionally faked reflections using screen space cannot reflect what is off screen. In addition, pre-rendered reflection maps cannot display anything in the environment that isn't completely static such as the player model, enemy models, npcs, moving debris, decals such as bullet holes in nearby walls, and moving shadows cast by anything. The blind spot in the current most-used methods is bigger than many are willing to admit.

>>16838146

>What exactly in your screenshots is contributing to the gameplay

Since you didn't read the post here it is again:

>Realtime raytracing is intended to provide a more accurate representation of lighting, reflections, shadows, etc.

>It is used for aesthetic purposes. If aesthetics are purely useless then just toggle the graphics off.

It was never implied that raytracing had anything to do with gameplay. The only instance I can imagine in which it would impact gameplay is seeing enemies in a reflection before encountering them. Essentially cheat-peaking around corners. Aside from that rare instance it is, again, purely aesthetic.

>>16838343

>the biggest difference is that everything's just brighter and more saturated

Even when you crop out the water it's impossible to ignore the shadows. A better argument would be if you had the same shot with a different method for the shadows and water. As is, you're just moving the goalpost with a crop tool which isn't very convincing.

My personal favorite way to play the game is to use the "Buffet" option to create a single biome world. It's a really interesting challenge and depending on your exact settings you can end up in a really weird world. Some of my favorites that I've played around with a little bit are endless swamps, badlands worlds (which feel a little like a Mars survival mode), beach worlds where you have to scavenge everything from shipwrecks, Gravelly Mountains+ (which has a surprising number of resources but you have to explore to get them), and jungle edge which is an absolute tropical paradise. I've attempted stone beach and mushroom fields worlds but those lack enough resources to be viable it seems. Maybe that will change in the future.

Also try to make an ocean world using End generation. It's some wild shit.

Seems kind of pointless to bother so much about something that's not going to change how the game plays, but, okay. Why should I care about fancy lighting in a game where everything's made of giant fucking pixelated blocks such that fancy water and shadow effects just clash with the game's aesthetic and highlight how bad everything else looks? This is exactly as meaningless as the Quake 2 raytracing demo and is as aesthetically pointless as, say, skinning the same low-poly Q2 models with ultra high res textures. Sure you can count the number of blood vessels in that grunt's severed neck, but it's still wrapped onto a model that looks like a block of cheese. If you're going to bother trying to show this crap off, do it in a game that might actually benefit from it.

Alright, lets talk about gaytracing. For this I'm using a mod that approximates the effect, its not true raytracing as light will ghost in areas for a few seconds if the source is killed, but after a while its close enough for still image purposes. And it's slightly out of date because I had to PIRATE THE MOD but that aside this is on a GTX970 blah blah had some issues with game crashes if I tried to screenshot while in darkness which is half the reason I kind of like it. I think if it could be implemented well anywhere, it would be a stealth game.

Anyways, first I'll showcase some shadow stuff and then you can request I show off various things to give you an idea of the effect. Pic 1 is a light source affixed to a ceiling in the room above the demo room. This naturally results in very little of the room below it being lit, resulting in abyss. Pic 2 is the same idea, but with two larger holes, resulting in a larger amount of light pouring through. Pic 3 shows how blocking a light source casts a shadow, but pay attention to how the color changes based on the amount of light that is able to reach it.

For gameplay, the benefits are fairly obvious. It makes exploration in dark areas, be it caves or strongholds, more or less dangerous based on the amount of light available. Controlling where light sources are placed in an are, plus a decent saturation of enemies, will deflect how easily darkness is defeated with torches. I'll try to come up with a few more demonstrations. I, again, would like to see this implemented in a stealth focused game

Which was what exactly? By moving the goalpost I mean imagine there is a goalpost at the bottom-most pixel of the first image, >>16838343 you then crop the image and move that goalpost from 346px to 184px. So in a literal sense you moved the goalpost and told everyone to ignore where it was previously. >This naturally results in very little of the room below it being lit

I like it for that reason as well, but only aesthetically. I don't agree that it's practical for gameplay because you can't see fuck all. Modding torches to cast light while held in your hand doesn't work, night vision potion doesn't work either. So unless you toggle the shader off, or produce a fuckton of light sources, you can't see shit and can't play the game. Raytracing is just another tool in visual design. It's not a realism thing, that's just how its being used by developers who have always done a realistic style. All raytracing actually fucking is is a simulation of light reflecting off surfaces. This is equivalent to complaining about developers using 3D models in 1998 because "games don't have to have realistic dimensions, its just an unnecessary usage of computation power". Minecraft is an example of a graphically stylized game that's implementing the technology, not because they want it to look realistic, but because they want to implement reflective light.

Nigger I wrote my own raytracer for college years ago. You don't have to explain what it is. That shit was a first year assignment. And back then it was slow ass garbage, now it's just pretty fucking slow garbage. Point being that it's garbage, even if it were fast.

>Raytracing is just another tool in visual design

Raytracing is a crutch used to replace proper graphical design. Chasing realism has always been the cancer fucking up videogames, even before feminism came in to kill it further.

>Minecraft is an example of a graphically stylized game that's implementing the technology, not because they want it to look realistic, but because they want to implement reflective light.

Minecraft is an example of a game completely raped to smithereens by retards trying to use shaders on it. Those 256x "realistic" texture packs looked garbage on it. Bumpmapped normal shaders look garbage on it. Raytracing looks garbage on it.

Embed related is a scene running on purely a CPU 10 years ago. Same guy has new shit using RTX cards for pure pathtracing at 60FPS@720p. The important part is, the guy doesn't have a single artistic bone in his body (I knew him pretty well back in the day). He couldn't create a compelling art style to save his life. But he has always been a frontrunner in the field of realistic traced graphics.

Because this shit exists purely to replace graphical design. You can't "design" realism.

Now for a semi-unrelated rant. Let's have some corrections here:

What most retards refer to as raytracing is in fact pathtracing. The difference between the two is that raytracing sends out rays for each pixel of the screen, while pathtracing sends out rays from lightsources, and either reports a color to a pixel when it hits it on the camera or provides a small contribution to pixels if it bounces too often but still has a line of sight to the camera.

Raytracing does not support area lights, instead faking them by making area lights out of many point lights amd adding random small offsets to each point light's position when tracing towards it.. Actual raytracing has hard shadows if those hacks aren't used, and it's still physically incorrect regardless.

Path tracing is/was easily recognized by the noisy black pixels whenever the camera or an object moves and all previous framedata has to be thrown away. People just let it render for seconds to minutes to get a clear image back in the day. This has lessened through the use of AI (predicting what should be in the black pixels, thus still physically incorrect) and just throwing more rays at it (for instance by use of RTX hardware). Jewvidia actually just throws the result over normal GPU based rasterisation, creating a shitty mix and has thus successfully raped the terminology by referring to all of this as raytracing.

You know the technique doesn't have to be strictly accompanied by photorealistic textures and models right? What other realistic graphical effects bother your butthole? Real time shadows? Ambient occlusion? Reflective surfaces? Object motion blur? Color? Does a game like Mario 3D World look bad because it uses shaders and dynamic lighting?

Motion blur and shitty fake Ambient Oclusiono bother me yes, just as they did bother 90% of the people on v/ in years past. Same shit as MUH BLOOOOOOOM and "HDR" rendering that does the opposite of what HDR does in real life.

SM3DW straddles a fine line between semi-realism and cartoony stylistic choices. That's actual good art design.

Look at first pic related: it mixes some more realistic textures on background elements with decidedly unrealistic lighting methods on characters. The dinosaur in particular uses a highly exaggerated, almost cell shaded specular highlighting method, with some soft shadows and a nearly untextured albedo map, just flat colors and gradients. Many objects actually use a different set of light sources than the main level mesh, and especially characters have completely unrelated lights providing extremely unrealistic rimlighting that makes them pop from the rest of the screen. The worst thing in this image is actually the walls, with a shitty specular map making it look plasticy and fake in a way that doesn't fit the wooden floor and gate.

And the second image, notice how the reflections on the train and bullet bills use a reflection map with the light coming from the direction of the camera. The scene itself has a directional light somewhere off the top left of the screen. That shit is designed to give a particular feel, one of overexaggerated shininess. You don't get this from fags using raytracing, since everything uses the same physically accurate lighting model and anything in the scene that doesn't looks incredibly out of place.

And the two types of Nether forests? Each with their own trees and specific wood types? Terraria. They didn't even change the name when ripping off Terraria's Crimson biome.

And a Nether-specific ore? Terraria.

An underworld ore that needs an additional ingredient in order to turn it into a useful metal? Terraria (see: obsidian + hellstone)

Items that aren't destroyed by lava? Terraria.

I find the hunger system to be a superior mechanic for handling health and healing compared to the old "eat food for instant heals". It does two things well:

First, it prevents you from being able to instantly full heal for basically free, trivializing nearly all threats that don't instantly kill you. You can still do so with certain much harder to come by items, but in general you are going to rely on food and slow health regen. However, instead of just being permanent health regen therefor trivializing any sort of resource management threat, you still have to consume resources to heal (ie fill hunger).

Second, because you need to eat food regardless of taking damage, and regenerate health under normal circumstances (with a resource management component stated above instead of free health regen like some call of duty shit), scratch damage is no longer an issue. In older versions of minecraft pre-hunger, scratch damage from falling 3 blocks was the biggest annoyance in general play, especially since most healing items would heal for 4+ hearts and the fall only does half a heart at a time, so you had to either waste tons of healing or almost never be at full health.

>First, it prevents you from being able to instantly full heal for basically free, trivializing nearly all threats that don't instantly kill you.

Is already fixed by making food take time to eat, making the hunger system completely superfluous to solving this problem.

>Second, because you need to eat food regardless of taking damage, and regenerate health under normal circumstances (with a resource management component stated above instead of free health regen like some call of duty shit), scratch damage is no longer an issue.

Not needing to worry about chip damage is not worth the tedious chore of having to keep a hunger bar filled. You call it "resource management" as if it's an engaging mechanic. Having a slow, constant regen wouldn't unbalance anything, would fulfill the same purpose of negating scratch damage, and wouldn't require the player to pause everything they were doing every five to ten minutes just to ensure a bar keeps filled.

No matter what design issues regarding healing it solved, it doesn't change the fact that "managing" hunger is not at all engaging and only serves as a repeating annoyance, especially since you spend much less time in combat than you do in activities like gathering resources and building. Those healing issues could have been solved in other ways that didn't add a chore that regularly pulls players away from the fun activities of the game.
