Most of the mods from the STEP guide are worth a look at. Aside from the bug fixes though don’t get something just because it’s on the guide. It’s just a good list so you don’t have to spend too long searching.
And don’t fucking bother with an ENB, only morons think it looks good in a game this old.

here are some of the ones I'm pretty sure I used by nexus doesn't really say if I got em
so PREORDER DLC weapons have soem issue of not being effected by perks and not counting for things like achievements achievements and not being able to use vanilla weapon mods so I definitely used one of the following three mods to fix the sturdy caravan shotgun. I may have changed to a more comprehensive mod later.

I played it once, enjoyed it, and am considering playing it again with mods for a different experience. It's the best Fallout to me. FO4 didn't appeal to me at all and 76 I didn't even try. Seems like most people rated the games in a similar way. How is it padded beyond what would be expected of any FO/TES?

New Vegas requires three separate mods just to reduce crashes and stuttering, no amount of mods can make the fighting bearable even in comparison to Fallout 4 (which is still unbelievably shit when compared to any unremarkable and forgotten C-tier shooter from the 2000s), you the more you try to see different quest routes the more you realize how little you haven't seen already.
Your best bet is to load up on mods that add new characters and stories, turn down the difficulty to easy, and enjoy until the save gets corrupted by a shitty vanilla script not cleaning after itself correctly and placing several vital NPCs a million miles off the map.

Get CONELRAD as a radio mod if you haven't. The modder ripped music off an "Atomic Platter" CD set, so it has alot of good music from the 40s and 50s, also has Conelrad announcements from with advice of Civil Defense and announcements from the likes of Pat Boone, Boris Karloff and Connie Francis.
Played alot of radio mods in my days and this one is my favorite. The songs and messages are just so appropriate.

The problem isn't how viable or not various builds are, but how satisfying those builds are to play: between stiff controls, poor animations, retarded AI, horrible hit feedback, and VATS bait such as the cazadors, New Vegas just doesn't have fun fights.
There are some exceptions, for example the first time I fought the giga roboscorpion in OWB, but they're rare and often conditional on the player not knowing what to expect.
Cool videos though.

nah man most fights are great if you role play right. Then again most of the time I was a sneaky guy in road warrior gecko armor carrying that gun, another fine example of the superiority of new vegas over FO4 since you could switch ammo depending on the situation thus reducing overall carry weight by not needing to carry multiple fire arms, plus a gun that shoots 5.56 or .223 is super fucking rad, made me feel like the cool lone gunman type, real great if you're into playing cowboy shit.
