So /v/, do you still play on your ps2? Or are you emulating your vidya? Also, what's some good lesser known ps2 games that you can recommend?

Been considering getting one for a while, the flea market nearby always has at least 3 for sale. I would emulate it, but from what I know PS2 games can have a lot of difficulty being emulated and are taxing on resources, and I would have to get an actual PS controller which I think is one of the worst controllers in existence, you don't have fucking shapes as your face buttons, you have letters. Every other console has gotten this right, even the shitty ones with nogaems that nobody remembers or cares about, fuck you soyny for trying to be different. I should not have to look at the fucking controller to see which one is square or cross when I'm making split-second decisions.. Any multiplats usually have a PC counterpart that's far superior or an Xbox port if it's console only, which I already own and is softmodded, so that further waters down the list of games I care about. Final Fantasy is something I've been trying to get into for a while, especially VII, and there's quite a few others but I can't think of them right now. Also, how difficult is it to softmod a PS2 and put an HDD in? hopefully it's easier than the Xbox and I don't have to deal with drive locking/unlocking, hotswapping IDE cables, and trying to get a fucking eeprom over an unstable FTP connection

>you don't have fucking shapes as your face buttons, you have letters

Shapes are easier to remember though. Controllers with letters are worse for split-second QTEs due to Nintendo and Microsoft swapping the letters around and making everything confusing for idorts.

Its easy, the Network adapter on the back of the fat is actually a hard drive adapter as well. It has to be an IDE hard drive, western digital has a weird offset on their plugs so if you use one of them you have to take the metal plate off the adapter. Free MCBoot is good if you have a way of getting the files onto a memory card like an adapter for the ps3. If you dont have that there you can ftp or use Free HDBoot that is the same just loaded into the HDD instead of MC. As far as that you don't have to do anything to the console besides put the HDD in the hole. I stuck one in my PS2 years ago and I love it.

For using an HDD, there is a general list of which IDE HDDs work with the PS2. I would also recommend the Free HDBoot method as it requires no memory card, and after you have the Free HDBoot working, you can start putting Free MCBoot on the memory cards.

>I should not have to look at the fucking controller to see which one is square or cross when I'm making split-second decisions.

It's not something that takes long to get used to. Play something simple, like the classic Spyro games, with one and you'll learn quick what's where.

>Also, how difficult is it to softmod a PS2 and put an HDD in?

Not as easy as setting up a PSP or Wii with CFW, but not exactly hard either. Takes a compatible HDD, a fat PS2 (expansion bay), and a network adapter (sends power to the drive from the system and lets the system load/save data to the drive) to run. You'll also need the drive set up with the right files, a means to connect it to the computer (at least the first time; I think I've heard there's homebrew that lets you set up the drive as a server), and one of a limited amount of programs that can communicate with it once formatted (PS2 games have to be installed a particular way, rather than just copied over). You'll also want the most up-to-date versions of OPL and HDL for game loading options, but only the system's PS2 mode is able to access the drive. Setting up Free HDBoot or Free McBoot will also give additional utility like hotbarring functions so you don't have to spend a bunch of time in browser looking for things on the drive.

I will say that a CFW PS3's easier to dump games onto as they can just be copied over, but most PS3s don't have hardware PS2 backwards compatibility, and you'd probably still have a better time running the games on the system they were made for. Just be aware that there are some slight inherent compatibility differences between various PS2 models: The sheer bulk of the library should run fine on any model, but some PS1 and even PS2 games won't work right on particular PS2 models for whatever reason.

>Also, how difficult is it to softmod a PS2 and put an HDD in?

Easy assuming you get a good file, time consuming if not. On a scale of PSP to Xbox i'd say its about a Wii

A few things you have to consider

>are you gonna get the official adapter or some 3rd party adapter?

Official ones were made for IDE drives and come with a network port while 3rd pary ones can come with SATA support instead but no network port

You can however mod an official one to support SATA, I recommend this option, some people used to sell diy mod kits for that. You can also buy a ide-sata converter but then have to get a 2.5 inch drive to fit in the ps2

>Do you already have FMCB or easy access to it

If you already have FMCB installed then its just a matter of getting HD Land OPL and telling OPL to look at the drive for games, and you can use a number of tools to either connect it via network or directly to a computer install games onto the HDD

Doing it without already having fmcb comes with more steps

revive today has an easy to follow guide but the img of FHDB didint fully work for me and neither did the "newbie package" img from one of the playstation mod sites

If the same thing happens to you its still pretty simple

Get Winhiip, and HDD raw copy tool or some tool like it and find an img of FMCB/FHDB to install onto it, its okay if its an older version, you'll just install the latest anyway since the boot time is pretty long compared to installing it on a memory card

format the drive into a ps2 drive with winhiip. make sure its 48bit HDL for bigger drives. Then burn the image onto it with tool of your choice dont worry about games you have to make sure it all works first

get the latest FMCB installer, OPL, HDL. and wLaunchELF and put them in a usb stick, you might not need wLaunchELF but i cant remember I dont think the formatting matters but it might

If things went right then after plugging in your HDD to your ps2, and a long boot time after seeing the FMCB logo you should reach a the ps2 menu,

don't worry if you entered the cd/memory card browser, depending on the version you burned it might not have settings in place to take you to the other menu, just navigate out of the browser to get to the scrolling menu

Plug the usb into the PS2

scroll to find and open uLaunchELF

go to MASS this is the usb in uLaunchELF find and run FMCB installer

Backup your memory stick saves and then install FMCB onto it

Now your boot time isn't absolutely horrid consider getting a second memory card for FMCB and backing up saves in case saving corrupts the first

Now if if the image you burned was an earlier version of fmcb than your installer go ahead and install it onto the HDD aswell,

if not, exit go back to ulaunchelf and place the folder of OPL and HDL where you'd like them, usb, hard drive, or keep it on memory card if you plan to keep it plugged in whenever you're playing

After this go find a guide on creating main screen links with uLE, and change settings to take you to the scrolling menu rather than the cd/mc menu on boot

Go install games with winhiip or whatever other tool you like

Maybe download cover and cd art for OPL, maybe grab some themes for OPL aswell if you're into that

Consider grabbing other ELFs like the nightly builds of OPL or GSM for selecting graphics modes for games

body too long

>Hw big of a HDD can i get

2TB is max using other tools, winhiip only supprts 1tb

>Why OPL and HDL?

OPL is the better tool and apparently is coming with a new massive update coming soon but as of right now there are a handful of games that HDL runs that OPL can't

so keep it around just in case

>Are there other tools besides winhiip?

Yes but each come with their own problems, you can decide for yourself what you want in a program but i only know how to use winhiip

Winhiip's development stopped 16 years ago so its got its own problems like it doesn't support drives bigger than 1tb, mostly because it doesn't support more than 156 games installed and bugs out trying to read a drive that does, it also doesn't install over a network

>Winhiip said "game" and "other game" were a duplicate but they're different/its a 2 disk game

Winhiip names games after thier ISO/cue file name if the first 24 characters of the files are same it considers them duplicates, so change thier names. This is due to how games are installed for the PS2 as they each have their own partition

>Why dont i just name them after title IDs?

Because OPL and HDl read the partition names. OPL however has a config file that can be made on a per game to basis that will show game names instead along with other info you put in, it also holds emulation settings.

>emulation settings?

different toggled settings to adjust problems like slowing read speeds to deal with audio stuttering, disabling the "reset game" commands from controllers, etc. Don't worry aobut figuring out what needs what, theres 3 sites that cover it. One is exclusive to HDL and 2 for OPL. mildly interesting, Mode 8 is exclusive to 2 games

>PSX games?

Its fucking spotty for hdd & usb, ~1/5 of the games are unplayable and another ~1/5 playable with issues the other 3/5 are fine. Over network has a vastly superior with 10% being unplayable and other 10% playable with issues. Look up POPStarter if your interested

I've got a few decent games, but I need to get some that I haven't already played to death when they were new. I made the error of dragging my feet on archiving stuff when the ISOZone was still around. Yeah, there are alternatives, but they don't seem to be as complete.

I think I need to buckle down and play through embed related, though.

A small one, and a motherboard-killing clock capacitor in most variants of it. The Xbox is a bitch and a half to softmod. It's not difficult, but it's a long and tedious process. The PS2 is notably easier to deal with in this respect.
