I have noticed the same thing. I mentioned in the past of how artstyle and aesthetic used to be more masculine, and most shows/games had a dark tone to them. One of my biggest gripes is the lack of detail and shading. I think many people ITT are ignoring color theory and how many soft looking bright colors tend to attract toddlers/young kids, whereas darker tones conotate hardness, oppressiveness, violence, etc. In the artworld this was the Frank Frazetta, Brom, Butler, Elmore, etc. The same can be said of anime like Vampire Hunter D, Violent Jack, Wicked City, etc. Notice how all those works also portrayed mature/grown people as opposed to young kids or cuteness with the soft brightness of the colors of today.

I'd say it's a problem of economics and social behavior. Most people don't want to spend the time and discipline into mastering their craft, I don't think most of the works today can even be called art, what most people put out is pure diarrhea. Art is mastery (mechanically) and aesthetic mixed into a perfect relationship.

To push boundaries you need to not only have the skills to make amazing visuals but also be well-versed in the technology at hand. Because an artist that simply makes something look good will make an unoptimised mess that will inevitably be cut out of performance reasons or lack of time.
