Last thread was pretty comfy.

Let's discuss both hardware and software.

What's your favorite games and mods?

Do you prefer playing VR exclusives or do you prefer VR ports?

How's the Walking Dead VR game that recently came out?

Also how long has it taken for anons to get their "VR legs" for those that experienced VR motion sickness?

I made a video on a few ways people can deal with VR motion sickness but I know new techniques are being developed.

Invidious prevents ads from popping up. I only even put ads on after I was told youtube is more likely to show videos to subscribers and viewers if it has an ad on it. I wish youtube went back to not paying video creators because it would stop faggots from making low quality shit but I know that sadly wont ever happen.

I played Boneworks for 4 hours last night. It's fun but the real immersion and fun killer is the physics because they are so wonky and annoying. It's very burdensome and getting stuck is really easy.

Kinda concerned, but at the same time optimistic, I know for a fact the Linux end of steamVR development was amputated to work on HL:A, worried about Valve cocking up the release of Source 2 and them not getting on it from the get go to get a garrysmod type thing working in source2, VRmod was fucking amazing for what it was and it seems like wasted potential to not carry it into new projects.

If you're used to other forms of motion you don't get VR sickness as easily. I grew up on the lakefront as a kid so a childhood of dealing with rocking boats (that sometimes would capsize because the nieghbor kids were retarded) has made me immune to VR motion sickness.

Even when I first did VR and my craptop I was using at the time would dip to around 30fps in H3VR; no motion sickness whatsoever.

About 3 days of playing a VR puzzle game, but it was pretty minor for me. However, I've never really had motion sickness until I put on a headset, so might be a little longer for people with a bigger intolerance. Anyone can get legs through exposure, though.

Check the Blade and Sorcery VR thing if you can, it's basically less jank Boneworks with magic and dismemberment. It's basically a sandbox game though.

When I get my new PC at some point, probably next year after the next gen of consoles come out, I might try VR. I am wary though. Some say its amazing and worth it, others say the opposite. Then there is the motion sickness, which I do suffer from somewhat. If I'm in a car, I have to look out the window to avoid it for example. I play fast paced games like action games and FPS quite a bit so maybe that helps.

you can get a lenovo explorer or clone for 150 bucks on sale, which does most stuff fine (ofc for that price it has some drawbacks, controllers are a bit too small to be comfortable and the display isn't that good, I already got 2 dead pixels but don't really notice those while playing)

motion sickness needs some getting used to, especially to figure out what works for you and doesn't. just don't force it, you can't really power through and it can turn you off the whole thing subconsciously quite hard. just give it time and start with a more comfortable game, it will get better over time. unless you're one of those poor fucks that will always have it, sucks

Long post ahead

I think the next challenge/big step for VR is going to be working around movement in a limited space, and primarily why I think Half-Life: Alyx is not going to be reviewed very well is because there's no way to move around in-game that doesn't break full immersion, be it moving with a controller or just teleporting around everywhere. Look back at the trailer and notice how little movement from point A to B there is, it's just going to be another rail shooter except it's in the HL universe and with admittedly very good graphics (Volvo has always managed to deliver a good-looking game at least). But getting back to my main point, I think that VR will excel in situations similar to lasertag and paintball where there are physical arenas set up with the same dimensions as a virtual world. Embed related, I went out to California a couple years ago and got to go through it with my sister and it's one of the coolest things I've ever done.

>given a vest similar to those in lasertag and a VR helmet with a headset to talk with your partners, full skeletal animation in the game world for each player

>dimensions of the physical room are the exact same as in the game world

>atmosphere effects help make it feel "real" (on the lift in they actually have heaters and fans to make it seem like it's ultrahot like Mustafar, some objects in the world can be grabbed/pressed/activated in real life)

>get blasters halfway through, track and aim very well considering it's all wireless (since it was just me and my sister we each grabbed two blasters and went full Rambo)

>able to make the game world seem bigger by making the most of limited space (elevators that give the illusion of going up/down, backtracking to other areas of the same room, etc.)

The experience also was still limited, however

>impossible to die/fail, if you get shot/hurt your vest vibrates and that's it

>there was one puzzle in the game that my sister couldn't figure out for her life (even though it was just "press these buttons in this order dumbass", the game eventually moved us ahead anyways without solving it

>cost ~$20 per person, whole thing lasted maybe 15-20 minutes

There was also a scenario for Ghostbusters they did a few months earlier, and they're swapping over to an Avengers themed one soon because dude capeshit.

Obviously something like this isn't going to work for your average home, no matter how much current technology advances to emulate it (omnidirectional treadmills can still only work on two planes for the most part, god forbid you encounter a ladder). But as of right now I think it's the best hope VR has, even though it's still just a novelty, the technology still isn't advanced enough yet to bring it into the home, no matter how much it's forced out. But for today, I would be perfectly fine with doing different scenarios like this one, although not enough to cough up $20 for each playthrough.

It took a week or so playing smooth locomotion games to get used to it. Now I usually have no motion sickness and when I do get it it's mild.

>>16831312

Moving with a controller is fine if devs are willing to embrace it. Most users are capable of adapting to movement in VR. Stuff like you're describing is a gimmick that adds zero value over actually going out in the woods with some paintball guns. Pure roomscale games can work, but a themepark experience is always going to be trash as a game. You can't put complex mechanics in a game when the average player is only going to be in it for twenty minutes.

the thing is, in the head of things if the input has been designed properly like >>16831419 mentioned, you don't really notice it anymore. heck people get immersed in a 2d screen and completely forgot they're just clicking on a mouse.

the biggest issue right now is valve being fucking retarded when it comes do designing controllers. the vive wands with their touchpad only shit are still dragging us down, the knuckles are and improvement but still with huge flaws and way overpriced for the little fingertracking gimmick they provide. meanwhile sony came up with a simple as fuck controller and it works like a charm for what it's supposed to do.

and in the big picture they fucked themselves even harder, people look at fucking facebook now to design their vr shit.

Don't ever buy the Oculus. It's truly shit and I wish I bought a Vive. Another 3rd party app, headset keeps disconnecting somehow with USB unrecognized and the only solution is wait for it to randomly reconnect (on avg about half an hour), dropped win7 support so things don't work right, the faux leather is wearing off in little clumps all over people's face, and they're owned by Facebook so that should say it all.

VR is still fucking boring anyways. No games besides ports and indie titles. Porn is janky and not at all appealing. What a shitshow.

I think, if you ignore the "muh degeneracy" tradcon LARPers from /pol/, that pic is mostly complaining about VR ATM being a halfhearted nogaemz cashgrab fad.

Especially with the excessive focus on roomscale, overhyping of VR sickness, underpowered mobile/console hardware, and completely non-game-oriented normalfag corps such as Facebook and Samsung being influential players.

Personally, I hope this isn't the case, and IMHO a solid niche for actual vidya in VR will probably be carved out similar to milsim autists after the fad fails, but I admit it's a valid concern.

>Especially with the excessive focus on roomscale, overhyping of VR sickness, underpowered mobile/console hardware

All of this is a result of this:

>completely non-game-oriented normalfag corps such as Facebook and Samsung being influential players.

Facebook wants something they can sell to absolute retards and people who've never played a game on anything but a phone before. Anything that introduces any kind of friction into the experience removes huge amounts of that audience. If you've ever seen an adult totally new to video games try to play one, you know they often have an extremely hard time figuring out movement. If you make a game that doesn't require you to move except by physically moving around the play area, you bypass that issue and the motion sickness issue. Most people will acclimate to movement in VR given time, but the audience Facebook is pursuing is likely to give up the first time they get sick rather than giving it that time. The headset has to be standalone because the audience Facebook wants doesn't have a VR-capable PC and isn't going to buy one. It has to have garbage mobile-tier hardware because otherwise it'll be prohibitively expensive.

This is why Boneworks is so important, despite not being a great game. It demonstrates that you can be successful in the VR market with a game that rejects all those restrictions.

Gonna go on a tangent, but the real end goal of VR for me is complete sensory replacement, ie you "feel" what's in the virtual world and essentially "become" the character you're playing, not mentally, but perception wise. The "deep dive" type of thing.

Shit's just going to get more and more replaced by robots as society goes along, jobs went in demand from office and industry to physical labor extremely quickly and in 50 years having a job is going to be a fucking dream. Creative positions and repair will probably always be open, but not everyone can suit that with education in the shitter.

If they actually make deep dive shit, people will probably be able to buy thought implants by then to outmode traditional education.

Of course, this is all assuming we survive world war 3 or some shit. I hope we enter a novel age and live to see great scientific progress, because right now it's all fucking

BORING AS FUCKING SHIT

And i'd like to be able to live with myself. Maybe the reason we've never seen alien life is because everyone uploaded themselves to the electromagnetic plane of existance and they're having fun or some shit. Maybe all civilizations do that at some point, and it just takes so long for species to bring about civilizations and shit that it's exceedingly rare to have two planets capable of life producing living beings at the same time. Like the chance of two neighboring species developing and NOT going electromagnetic for long enough to see eachother is so slim that it eclipses a number we haven't even accounted for.

Maybe that's why people see ghosts sometimes.

Yes, it's part of the same thing GG uncovered linking DiGRA to DARPA, among many similar efforts by various corporations and governments. The idea of taking vidya, dusting off or assimilating all those filthy gamers coating it, colonizing it with normalfags, then breaking it down into tools for the surveillance and control of people in everyday life.

Not even watering it down into casual tablet fodder as we feared in the past, but stripmining it for technology and expertise, completely destroying it in the process.

Look friend, you're not going to get what you want like that, hell the way the vive and index work is already a cut down for 3d position tech which uses 8/12 mapping stations.

Though if it makes you feel any better, you can have some level of tracking with just one lighthouse.

Okay, so this is probably going to completely ruin the mystique of vr and how it's so amazing, but it's literally just mocap suit tech stuck to a helmet and a couple of wiimotes.

Gen2 is the internally stored solution (gen 1 is those white balls you used to see all the time) the purpose was to increase the mobility of the operator, typically 8/12 external recievers were used to pick up the trackers to capture from all angles, but when you're only checking for the two hands and the head you can easily knock that down to just 2.

It is already that bad and an abundance of escapism is why. The only thing that will change is how direct their control is and how effective it will get once they have full access to your brain. Instead of simply memory holing things on paper, with search engines and the like it will simply be erased from your brain. They will rewrite your mind to that of a cuck, probably straight up imprinting a cuck fetish. They will remove any objections you might have to being castrated and wageslaving.

In the end, when they are confident they have complete control they will end the pretense and incentive of a pain-free fantasy and start torturing your mind. Even once you're dead they will copy your soul onto a chip and keep torturing it forever. Escapism is a dead end that ends in pure suffering that one can't escape from. It's like the drugs they wish to sell you, it might make you high for a while but sooner or later you will wake up to a life in shambles and a broken body. You'll be sucking your dealer off for a fix but it won't be enough.

I've been fucking around with Vivecraft. First off, changing shit to VR hasn't made skeletons anything less than annoying piece of shit eagle-eye-aiming CUNTS, but otherwise it's been fun so far.

The first time I went in, I was really fucking surprised by how big everything actually is. Blocks are massive, items in your hand and on the ground are massive, enemies feel a tad threatening for once, and it can fuck your back up if you play too long. My spine fucking hurts playing this shit, and I'm really goddamn tired.

Another thing: in normal Minecraft I autistically build the fuck out of my main base and decorate the hell out of it, but in VR I couldn't give less of a shit. I'd just find some empty abandoned house generated by a worldgen mod, plop down any missing blocks in the structure, then set up shop with chests and stuff. I'm not sure why I'm like this. Maybe it's just because it takes a bit more effort in VR?

Oh, and combat is actually pretty fun and satisfying personally. Stabbing the fuck out of zombies and creepers with quick jabs just feels right for whatever reason. No super complicated physics-based hitreg or physics, just quick and responsive attacks (that you can optionally make look fancy by doing dumb sword trick shit). Mining is still a "hold down the button" thing because hitreg for swinging your pickaxe at ore and stone is finnicky. It might potentially be a good way to mine obsidian faster if you swing your arms around really fast, though.

Overall it's fun, but draining.

Pic related is the view from the right eye.

What was that mod called that basically gave blocks a hp bar and said when it depleted the block was mined, Multimine? I think they could stand to implement that and then a simple "has pick contacted block at speed > x" to make mining feel immersive instead of just being autismcraft but in first person.

It doesn't have finger tracking, but there aren't really any games that use finger tracking heavily (and the only controllers that do currently use finger tracking are on the Index). If you're nearsighted, you need your prescription lenses for VR. There are a few companies that make prescription lens adapters so you don't have to wear glasses/contacts under a headset (wearing glasses is not a great idea, it's uncomfortable and can scratch the headset's lenses). I got a pair from VR Optician that work well, WidmoVR also has a good reputation, VR Lens Lab is trash from what I've heard. You can also make them yourself if you have access to a 3D printer.

The Fresnel lenses in an HMD bend light to create a virtual image "projected" into the distance. Your eye perceives it as if it was an actual distant object, so you need to use it with eye correction. This also explains why anti-VR people who think VR is unhealthy because your eyes are only a few inches from the screen are retarded.
