I was watching Gaming Historian and his piece on Super Mario Bros. 3, and it struck me as one of those few games that actually lived up to the hype. Of course this is back in 1990 and gaming wasn't so fucked back then, but it got me thinking:
What games have actually lived up to the hype?
I'm not talking about little-known games that came out of nowhere and blew up as popular titles, I'm talking about games that people were waiting for with rabid fervour and they still delivered (for the most part, you can't please everybody…)

Resident Evil 2 lived up to the hype, for sure.
Symphony of the Night, though, that was given luke-warm reviews by journos and didn't do too well commercially until it became a collector's item at the end of the generation. I remember one magazine at the time said something like "It's a good enough game, but gaming has moved on from simple 2D games, and Castlevania could be so much more in 3D" and then made comparisons to Nightmare Creatures, of all fucking things.
I don't remember Doom having much of a hype before launch either, it was mostly (at least in my part of the world) a shareware sensation that spread by word of mouth after the fact and became the reason to buy more RAM.

Symphony of the Night's a bit odd. At release, yes, it didn't sell very well, but post release word of mouth apparently got it to the point it managed a Greatest Hits release on the PS1 here in North America (which, unless SCEA made special exceptions, signified selling at least 150,000 or 250,000 copies, depending on if it was early or late fifth gen). PAL meanwhile saw a very limited initial print, and Konami apparently didn't see fit to run more unlike here, so it's languished with horrible fucking prices and rarity out there, while out here it's only started to see those sort of prices again thanks to Bloodstained getting the series lots of attention (most entries, especially the metroid-like ones, having been hiked since).

Personally I felt like the first two dungeons were pretty boring. The forest temple had like, one puzzle with the boomerang, and the Goron mines had the gravity boots mechanic I already experienced in Ratchet & Clank. But after that the game really picks up and I got really immersed.

Compared to GTA V's garbage piece of shit 'single-player'. RDR2 lived up to the hype.
However, even though it's has a 10/10 presentation and 8/10 mechanics, for me it's absolutely marred by the poz-loaded writing, clunky gameplay, far-too-easy difficulty, and a poor PC port. It boggles me to no end at how they've managed to make the game good at it's base, but fucks up the things surrounding it by forcing you to do slow bullshit for no other reason but to artificially inflate gameplay hours. There are more problems that i could write about (such as how the singleplayer fans hates online because Cockstar will focus on online from now on) but i digress, it's too much of a wasted potential for me.
Atleast Arthur is a handsome boyo, he doesn't deserve to be as spineless as he is in the game.

That's a no from me. Around 2004 a local gaming magazine ran a huge cover story that got me excited as fuck. Then it got delayed, and when it finally came out most of the cool shit had either been cut or watered down.
It's still absolutely fantastic and I love it, but it wasn't the game it could have been and it didn't really live up to the hype.
Anyway, I would argue World of WarCraft. I was really hyped from the first announcement, and when it came out it really was everything I wanted it to be. Of course it got worse and worse over time, but the initial release really did live up.

I can't speak on GoW or any Naughty Dog game because ever since I saw a bit of Uncharted 1 my interested dropped to the earth's core.
I don't hate the God of War games, the games tell me that the devs wanted to make something that appealed to them and not DMC which is fine. I dislike how one was more popular than the other though, but I guess that's life.

If your an experienced player looking for depth then DMC and Ninja Gaiden are the way to go, but the two series don't have perfect reputations, DMC2 is infamous for being nowhere near as good as DMC1, DMC3 when first released was made ridiculously hard, just to mess with north america, DMC4 was half a game, there was a reboot that fans hated, DMC5 came out 11 years after DMC4 and kind of expects you to have kept up with the story.
NG1 will kick your ass and if you pick easy mode your mocked for it, NG2 has tons of bullshit you'll never be ready for the first time, and you just have to deal with it, NG3 was shit since they tired to make it more like a cinicamitc western game, so you have to already know to get NG3 Razors edge which is actually decent, and then there is Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z which is nothing like the rest of the series. both DMC and NG also have particularly good tutorials DMC doesn't start reaching it's potential until a repeat playthoughs, and NG2 doesn't teach you about things like invincibility frames which are vital for surviving the Mentor and Master ninja, you have to learn so many things about getting good in both games by looking it up online yourself.
God of War on the other hand none of the games have a bad reputation, they always had a legitimately good tutorial, you can pick easy without feeling mocked for it, the games have great balancing with the chests that always give you want you should have for what point of the game your in, so you'll get Health/Magic upgrades, or greater amounts of Red orbs for improving your abilities when it's appropriate, and when you get a new magic ability the game gives you unlimited magic for a little while so you can experiment in a safe environment. All of these things are on top of the Spectacle and marketing budget.
God of War is satisfying to play from the get go, DMC and Ninja Gaiden you need to go though a trial by fire in allot of ways, and that just doesn't appeal to as many people.

Demon's Souls and Dead Space were two games that lived up to my hype. On the flip side, GTA 4 was the most deflating followed by Oblivion, though I learned how much ambience and unique loot are what I like most in games with heavy exploration.

Yeah I'm not a casual, I'v beaten every DMC game on DMD, I'v beaten the 3D NG games on Master Ninja, I love a good challenge. But making a game that intentionally alienates people who don't give a shit about beating a hard difficulty mode, is simply a recipe for something that will make less money.
God of War does exactly what it sets out to do, and you want to act like an elitist, over how shit it is, but your still wining like a bitch when the vast majority of people don't care about DMC and NG as much as GoW.

I actually do think God of War is a good game, it just doesn't put all it's eggs in one basket, combat wise it's doesn't have as much depth as DMC or NG, but it's still better then all of it's imitators, like Dante's Inferno, the first Darksiders, Spider Man web of Shadows, X men origins wolverine, Sonic Unleashed, all of those have mediocre combat or somewhat better combat, God of Wars combat is far more polished then those. there is still depth in things like how you can pull out the strongest combo ender at level 1 despite the shorter version of reaching that ender being the only one shown in your movelist much later. Darksiders tries copying the grabs and does so poorly, they feel natural in GoW where they feel tacked on in other cgames, the finisher QTE's are also a choice for non boss enemies, you can do them if you wish and will get some health back, or just kill the enemy normally for the Red orbs, There is also allot of variety to how you can initiate grabs, more then Nero has in DMC.
God of War also does a good job at building up to it's final battle, and giving the player allot of variety in the places they go as well as a reason to go there, everything complements the fact your on a journey to see if Killing a god is even possible, DMC3 has a good story, but most of what you do in Temen-Ni-Gru while entertaining is really just fluff beyond the fights with Vergil and encounters with arkham, and Ninja Gaiden pretty much has Zero story there has never been anything going on with those characters.

Actually I enjoyed the first Darksiders more than God Of War, although I'd point to the fantasy-biblical setting as a good chunk of the reason as to why.
But I like the whole zelda clone parts of it and as a character I enjoyed War more than Kratos, although I enjoyed fuckin Marlow Briggs and his mask more than Kratos so that's not the highest of praise. Kratos just never seemed to embody what I should think a rage fuelled character should be like

I'm more saying strictly combat wise GoW 1's combat is better then Darksiders, which only got more fun to me when I learned about Crossblade canceling to do actual air combos, without that it's not that impressive, but the Zelda like levels and story make up for it's short coming.
as for Kratos's character I think he's far less intresting when they try and make him into Angry Rage man, that's what he is in God of War 2 and it's not too compelling to me. GoW 1, Chains of Olympus, and Ghost of Sparda, as a canonical trilogy treat Kratos more like a human being, And that's where I liked his character.

No nigger, they weren't. All of those only got popular post FF7. Prior to that all of those game were lucky to sell a hundred thousand units. In fact, Enix shut down their American division in 1995, and we missed out on stuff like Dragon Quest 5 and 6. Sega famously stalled on releasing Phantasy Star 4 in English for nearly two years. The genre was for autists and proto-weebs.
