Invidious embed. Click thumbnail to play. Emulating of course. Since someone made a fork of bsnes that can enable widescreen support some months ago, i've been going back and playing some rom hacks with it. Some games work better than others obviously, but the fact that this works at all is unbelievable.

just because you can doesn't mean you should. some games just look better in 4:3 because that's how they were designed to be played
take a look at Metroid Prime 1 and 2, you can use widescreen hacks in dolphin but the UI doesn't scale with it, and the map objects pop in and out on the edges because that's how they got it to run at a solid 60 FPS since the average burger didn't own a 8K curved 144Hz TV in 2003.

Keep in mind that you DID NOT see raw pixels back then like an unfiltered emulated game. You got some blurriness from using RF or composite (very few people had S-Video or better). Then the CRT's shadow mask (or the aperture grille if you had a Trinitron) was pretty much a filter in physical form.

There's a difference between smeared ass and video artifacts across a pixelated image. The games still looked sharp in 240p on a halfway decent TV, and that's not including PVM shit.

>>Emulation or hardware
Emulation. Growing up playing PAL sucked, but I didn't know it until I started emulating and games suddenly didn't crawl through molasses anymore. Some games were specifically reworked to run in real-time on PAL hardware, but most were just slower, and it sucks. Emulation also helps deal with issues like slowdown and flickering, which are hardware limitations that don't need to be there anymore.

If there is one thing that the Unreal Engine should have made very clear to everyone remotely interested in gaming, it is that the PC is superior in every regard to consoles.

I miss the old style of Phantasy Star games. I miss character sprites being rendered from behind. I miss the shitty growl and twang of the Genesis sound chips. I miss the blend of medieval swords and armor with goofy capes and sci-fi that was something other than glow and colored lines. I even miss the terrible three-frame enemy animations that sped up once they'd fully dissolved into view. There's a kind of demand for realism that's settled into gaming. It's sort of unquestioned that, say, a sword being swung must absolutely sound something like a sword being swung, just because it's trivially easy to record or buy a high-quality audio sample of a sword swinging. I guess, though, It's certain that back in the day the folks working on games would've wanted more authentic sounds or whatever if they could get them. In modern gaming it's more engine choice that shapes how a game looks and plays than hardware. It's an inevitable result of progress, but it forces the game devs to work a lot harder to imprint character–ANY character–onto their games, and most just can't do it.

The rise of CD audio was the death of unique gaming sound fonts. Every developer had a different way of talking to a soundchip. It's why you could tell a Capcom SNES game from a Konami SNES game just by the sound alone.
Now all music is .mp3, not synth or sampled and processed, now all sound effects come from the same foley effects libraries, and nothing feels original.
Truly great art is made with limitations, and as hardware progresses it only gets worse.

There's a few okay games, like the Apprentice, but there's nothing you'd seriously miss though. Even if a good chunk of the exclusives weren't ported over to PCs and 4/5th gen consoles It's not really a games machine, and it has serious trouble doing even the most basic shit, like having Sound effects and music at the same time.

Nice b8 huenigger. We're talking about the 16 bit era, aka when PCs had trouble drawing fast scrolling platformers and shooters, and it was only consoles and arcades that could. You would know this if you weren't underaged and actually played games made before 1998.

>i wonder if the BRs still use PAL.
BR here, and this will need a little clarification. Now this may surprise you: strictly, PAL and NTSC are not television systems. They are color encoding systems. You see, analog color television was not a "pure" color image, but a monochrome image with a color signal laid over it. So Europe used 576i video with PAL colors on top, while America used System M video with NTSC colors on top. People started to call the whole package "PAL" or "NTSC" because it's simpler, I guess.
Brazil, however, decided to mix things up and invented PAL-M. That is, System M video with PAL colors.
So we "used PAL" in this roundabout way that puts us closer to America than to Europe. We no longer do, of course, because we've moved to digital television. (And again we decided to be fancy, taking Japan's ISDB-T and replacing its MPEG-2 compression with H.264.)

With ntsc filters, they would flicker between two patterns fast enough that it's invisible to the naked eye, so a screenshot tends to look much worse than it actually is if you want to convince people to play games the way they would've looked like back then. Pic 3 here is a composite of Pic 1 and 2, which emulates how it would actually look in motion.

After loading up a game:
>Shaders -> Load Shader Preset -> shaders_cg -> ntsc -> ntsc.cgp
To make it the default shader for the current core:
>Shaders -> Save -> Save Core Preset
You can also save a game-specific preset too (I guess maybe for Super Game Boy supported games or maybe for GBA games that had alternate palettes when played on the Game Boy Player)
Depending on how old your Retroarch version is you may need to download a new one, or alternatively try this:
>In the top leftmost main menu: Online Updater -> Update Cg Shaders
