Originally this was going to be a mobile/tablet game, but then tablets didn't turn out to be as popular as the suits at activision-blizzard thought they would be, so it was retooled into a Warcraft 3 "remaster". If you look at StarCraft Remastered, its main crime is requiring always online.. but other than that, old custom games work and the graphics were merely improved. The campaigns are still segregated so Brood War tech/new units/balancing is not in the original game's campaign. Warcraft 3 "reforged" wasn't nearly as planned out.

There were kids you had to kill in "The Culling" sometimes, they'd show up when you destroyed the houses full of plague victims, just before they turned into the undead. Import original game assets not downsampled to fit on a disk, changed the EULA to have strict control over mods, and threw in a 4 hour movie. I am not sure if cripple was nerfed prior to this or not, it used to be 75% slower move speed/50% reduced attack rate/50% less damage, now it's the same move speed decrease, but 10% reduced attack rate and 35% reduced damage.

So the guys who did the asset work, Lemon Sky, have a couple of employees talking on Warcraft 3 Reddit board right now. The board's mods confirmed it was really them.

Here's their post, transcribed.

First of all, we'll keep details about this account vague, to hide who it belongs to, in case that ever becomes a problem. We won't tell you what we do at the company, or how many people this account belongs to, we hope that's okay.

Another thing to note is that this is not an attempt to pull any PR moves, or damage control, or anything like that. We might not even be able to answer any of your questions properly or informatively. This account is simply interested in what you have to say, and maybe we can share some of what happens on our end, as we were working on it.

On our end, we worked on W3R for a fair amount of time, almost two years or so, and we were super excited about it. Come release day we were disappointed but we also understand your frustrations. It hit us just as hard too. How do you guys feel about the game? About the art? Did we do a good job there at least?

To be clear, we do not represent Lemon Sky, we are just some people who work for them. We are also scattered through out the project and work on different things, so there are things that we do not know about, are above our paygrade, or simply Blizzard did it themselves.

Despite the risk, we wanted to reach out, because as people who work in the background for big projects such as these, we did not know if you guys even knew people like us existed. We do not know what you guys thought of people like us.

We wanted to share just a bit of a peek behind the curtain of how the games industry works. There are some companies, usually bigger companies, for one reason or another, be it for budget reasons, or they undertake a project that is way bigger than what they're used to, or maybe they are working on multiple projects, they have opted to outsource some or all of their assets. Usually we are give direction in what the client wants, how they want it, when they want it by, and then we set aside some time for the feedback cycle. Some companies are more strict, and some companies want for creativity from us. For Blizzard, they are not the strictest we've had. And we can offer our opinions, but in the end they will make the call.

Occasionally they will come visit us, hang out, and refocus our teams and stay with us for a week or so to monitor us. On this end, Blizzard has been pretty pleasant with us, when it comes to communication. We have a fairly good relationship with them, and they are cordial with us.

We have occasional bouts of crunches, especially in the lead up to some sort of public presentation. Sometimes we will have to divert manpower from other projects to keep up.

If we/the post is gone later in the day, know that us, as small artists with big dreams, we love you, and we might see you again another day. If you see us or our cohorts in other studios attached to a project you love, know that we gave it our all, as our jobs are one that is unseen, and if we do our jobs right, unnoticed.

The artworks wanted to overachieve in my opinion. You strived so much for perfection, that you forgot the core of the game. A reworked game should strike nostalgia into the people, who played the original, while being good enough for new players with today's expectations. The new artwork looks good, I admit, but it feels like playing the old, beloved story with completely different characters.

The nostalgia in the story is amazing, I love the remade maps, but some of the artworks are just too much, while certain cutscenes and cinematics look like that they were cut half because of time or resource limitations.

And after hearing some people's opinions, graphics is the part where the least people have problem with (apart from some cinematics and smaller things.) People talk more shit about the clusterfuck multiplayer system, the mapbuilding limitations, the hundreds of annying bugs and the shitty, not user-friendly UI.

So don't feel too disappointed about the animations and artworks, they are good enough in my opinion, while almost all OTHER parts of the game sucks... sadly.

We agree that the game is misguided in its attempts and that the focus should've been more on the player experience.

On our end some of us suspected that something was up when we asked about the chance to get to work on redoing the cinematics and such, but sadly no such thing came to pass, and we worked on most of the ingame models instead.

To be honest, we came about doing this because when we were looking up the metacritic scores, there was a particularly cruel review that said something along the lines of "the game was made by that stupid studio somewhere" and not gonna lie, after undergoing crunch and all that for this game, feels bad. We were also curious to see if people seperate the developers from us third party art studios. If you don't mind, answer us as honestly as possible, do you blame us for what happened to the game? As for proving who we are, we will consider it. Our worry is that this will jeopardize our jobs and/or our relationship with our client (ie Blizzard) companies for whom we work for. We will try our best.

For us, we suspect that Blizzard has had a change in direction, in terms of what they want to focus on. When we worked on Starcraft Remastered, we were originally excited to do the new cinematics, similar to our reply above. They had also decided to cut that out as a feature. For us, behind the curtain, it had felt like the focus had shifted to simply "getting the product out" and that's that.
