Basically, I got curious and wanted to know if there's more games that copy practically everything about IPs that haven't seen a sequel and likely never will in a long time, except they're made by indie developers with a completely new IP that is a clear homage to the original. I'll give you some examples of what I mean:

Pizza Tower, which is a Wario Land clone without lives and an emphasis on speed and getting a high rank

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, obviously Castlevania

FAST RMX, F-Zero without the comic book characters

Do you know of any more of them that are actually passable-to-great?

I don't like how they had to change the original score to remove a ton of sound effects, Cold Spaghetti just doesn't feel the same without Wario's crusty "OOKEYH"

I wonder how they got that crusty sound in the older games though, what kind of compression algorithm do GBA games use for both graphics and sound?

My major gripe with Pizza Tower is the ugly background art. It's MS Paint garbage. Not much in the way of background decorations, and the camera is zoomed out so they just repeated the pattern.

Some line weight could help with the actual characters, but they're the better animated and designed elements… except their colors blend with backgrounds often.

I don't know if i'm taking crazy pills, everyone is actually praising the art style uncritically… No way in hell is Wario Land 4 that ugly.

Pizza Tower is solid as fuck from the demos. The only Wario Land games I've ever put a lot of time into are Virtual Boy and 4, and I love Pizza Tower's take of making it more speed/momentum based. Have to say I hate having to use transformations to proceed through areas as they break the flow but hey, it's Wario Land. Also I agree about the level design art >>16822841 There is always the hope that it could get polished once the meat and potatoes of the game is finished but even if it stays ugly I imagine the game will be a blast to play.

Pic related is the table to Demon's Tilt, which is a spiritual successor to a trio of pinball video games made for the Genesis: Alien Crush, Devil's Crush and Jaki Crush. I got hooked on virtual pinball when Pinball Anon made a thread on 8ch/v and dumped Pinball Arcade and all of it's DLC tables in the thread he made, and I even ended up going to a pinball convention and played real tables of Black Hole, Centaur and Bride of Pinbot which were my favorites on Pinball Arcade.

I saw trailers of Demon's Tilt a couple months ago and saw it was doing Early Access shit so I decided to wait on it, and I pirated it a couple of days ago. Despite the physics of it feeling a little off, it's a fucking blast. Giant 3 tiered table with various enemies spawning and firing bullets, and each section of the table has it's own missions to increase score. The bottom tier runs through a cycle of minibosses that replace one another after you kill them including the Hermit who is in asshole who telekineticly grabs and throws your ball when you hit him, a zombie army, and an Elder Brain that shoots a fucking shmup wave of bullets when you hit it.

The middle tier of the table centers on the Priestess which involves killing monsters and hitting spikes to increase her magic gauge, which you can then cash in by landing in the crest of her habit and awakening her, causing her to cast spells which power up your multiplier and sends her through various forms which reminds me a lot of the Bride of Pinbot.

Then there's the top tier where the Chimera waits. I'm still trying to figure out how to open up the scorpion claw's multiball locks, but eventually if you hit the Lion's mask enough times it breaks off and enters a boss mode that starts a multiball once you defeat him.

Graphics are great, soundtrack is amazing, one downside is that the screen can have so many effects going on at once it's easy to lose the ball but I increased the size of the light trail the ball gives off and it's hardly a problem anymore. One thing I can't get a handle of is figuring out how the game treats nudging. Sometimes it feels like your nudge is directly influencing the ball, other times it feels like you're nudging the table like you would in a real pinball table/Pinball Arcade. I'm not sure if I'm retarded which is likely, I'm pretty bad at pinball despite liking it so much or if the nudging in the game just doesn't work well. Either way the game has a tilt meter in the GUI so you'll never accidentally nudge too much and set off the tilt alarm and lose your ball. Or at least if you do it's your own fault because you should have been paying attention to the meter.

If you're remotely interested definitely pirate it. After playing it pirated for a day I was impressed enough to buy it. I can upload my pirate .zip somewhere but I don't want to deal with the slow hell up of uploading to mega or vola and it's too big to upload to catbox.

>f zero

ok you retard, ikaruga the racing game is not a successor at all to f zero, it's not really comparable at all as it has no blast turning, drifting, etc. Instead it has it's own brand of mashing the shift button, you can't have false rocket start and get bumped off like in mode 7s of f-zero, there's no momentum throttle like in X/GX/AX of f-zeros, so really you're just talking out of your ass. also in fast rmx being in the air is really fucking bad compared to f-zero, nose diving doesn't help you at all.

Now bloodstained, more specifically curse of the moon, is a pretty damn good game successor.

>Speed and ranking don't go together, though, but that's my personal opinion.

I don't wanna sound like a contrarian but the reason why they do go together here is that the devs realized that lives were kind of a relic of the past and made the game to force you to git gud at individual levels or letting you get by easily but achieving a terrible rank and possibly forcing you to replay it. Which is much more in line with Wario Land 2 (which was more of a puzzle game disguised as a platformer) than 4, but the fact that you need to get back to the start also allows the guy to only really build half a level and then fill it with more obstacles on the way back.

There is sort of a meme in the community that is "check your Goodwills". I personally got my Xplorer from Amazon for like $35 (they were usually $70 but I guess I checked at the right time). Not much is known about Strikeline other than the name so far. It is just going to be an update that changes the name and a few assets to be more original. They are mainly doing this because Twitch doesn't give fan games their own categories.

I honestly think that the crusty look to the game makes it stand out all the more compared to other videogames. Wario's series has always been extremely good looking, but there were a ton of things that would just clash with the more traditional Mario design. I.E. the pre-rendered graphics in the menus, the non standard character designs (where certain parts look from a completely different series), the crustier voices and sound effects etc. Wario Ware is practically made out of recycled assets from Wario Land 4, and my biggest complaint with Wario games after Touched! is that none of the games feel like high quality bootlegs but more like "ironically bad". Or with Gold, just completely bland. I mean, just look at these intros.

Anyhow, people comparing it to Wario Land artistically are retarded, but if you compare the palette for Wario Land 2 to this game you can tell they took a lot of hints on the colors and "feel" of the game.

>I kind of like its crust, but yeah backgrounds could use bigger/permutated tiles.

It's the first time I've heard of textures/tiles being called "permutated". I've seen some videos of people creating good looping textures, but could you please explain what you mean by that? I could really use a crash course in good looping backgrounds and textures for my vidya projects…

My problem with Earthbound clones is that most of the time people making these will be extremely pretentious and just copy the STYLE of Earthbound rather than what made it stand out (that is to say, the setting and the humor). >>16823055

Not defending lives, but I always had a problem with time based score, because it's shit. Instead of taking your time to learn and have fun you are forced to do it quickly which may generate bad habits and make the game less enjoyable, specially when it comes to exploration. You say that lives slow you down and force you to restart or replay the level to get gud, well, time based score is just that. And yet, games that would actually be good with time scores like Sonic Adventure 1/2 don't fucking use it correctly.

>Stardew Valley, Shovel Knight and that middle ages advance wars clone from cucklefish count as good?

Well, Stardew Valley is good if you don't have access to rune factory or can't emulate the older Harvest Moon games. I played it on release and it was fine, easy to broke, fucking easy in comparison, but overall, a nice gap filler if nothing else. I think that with time, with patches and mods, the game improved a bit, but I couldn't say. Shovel Knight is a great platformer, though, the main campaign is amazing, the second campaign is kinda shit outside of character interaction, the specter knight campaign is fucking amazing too, and I have yet to play the newest one, but it looks pretty good. The thing about Shovel Knight is that at this point it does have a lot of content, and even if it was just the base campaign, it was pretty good.

>>16823096

>Wanna share your experience?

I can share mine. Game looks good and plays good, but that's because more often than not is a 1:1 copy of SOTN instead of trying to do something good, and then everything falls apart with the SJW setting. The game could have been great, and it does play great, but these are the same faggots that says that gameplay is the only thing important when you have to go through tranny paradise.

In comparison, the only bad thing about bloodstained is the retarded 2.5D, and even then it's not so bad as Mighty Number 9, not even close. It got elements from AoS and subsequent Igavania games and improve on them, and although not perfect, it is not a 1:1 copy of SOTN while improving some aspects of it. Anon is either a contrarian faggot or a tranny.

Just fucking look at the attached pics. Tell me second pic is not marble gallery, tell me this isn't a rip off of the SOTN menu. I finished the game, but I rather play Momodora, that looks and plays better, and Bloodstained is better on it's own merits as well.

Do you have some examples (preferrably in video format) explaining this? I'm intrigued by the approach. So basically like creating a tileset and randomly calling bits of it until you get a non-uniform looking texture?

>And yet, games that would actually be good with time scores like Sonic Adventure 1/2 don't fucking use it correctly.

From what I've played, it feels exactly as you said. It's a mixture of getting at least par timing, not getting hit too much (or rather never) and getting secrets/collectables throughout the levels. If the levels are pretty long like in Wario Land 4 then I can see this being an issue, but you go so fast, there's so few "obstacle" enemies and the rooms are so self contained that it doesn't seem to be much of an issue right now. I guess we gotta see what's the final release like.

Also something that bothers me a lot about SA2's scoring system is how it prioritizes ring count over time. You can get the worst time possible but if you get all rinks you have an immediate A, even though you didn't score enough points throughout the level. Problem is, some stages have obnoxiously high ring count that is tied to the fact that some rings are OOB or in unreachable places. It's such a damn oversight that it gets me angry every time I think about how much time I wasted trying to A rank certain stages using that trick.

Oh God I remember those screencaps, absolutely disgusting.

2.5D isn't bad if done right, i.e. to show you a bit more of the level ahead or during cinematic stuff, but it gets kind of wonky when your setting is purely 2D.

Also thank you. By the way why do all tranny games have the same sprite look as Final Fantasies on the SNES?

Are there any games that play very similar to Metroid Prime in that it's focused more on the exploration and puzzle aspects?

Recore is a game made by ex Retro staffers for Xbone for PC. It's supposed to be similar but I haven't played it that much. You can explore and the lock-on combat system is similar to Metroid Prime.

>so much drama in the background of Original Concept: Donut Steel 4 that a bunch of people leave and make their own Original Concept: Donut Steel

So it's a ripoff of a ripoff, inspired by nothing more than sheer desperation for a sequel of a dead series and behind the scenes drama amongst trannies. I'm sure it'll be fantastic.

It really was. Crash 3 was developed back to back with 2 and it's in many ways "unfinished", I mean half the soundtrack is just remixes of the main theme.

>At least in SA2, ranks are determined primarily by your time

But that's wrong.

In Runner stages you have a mix of points for tricks or enemies defeated, rings and time, in Hunting stages it's purely timed and taking at best one hint per piece and in Shooting stages it's almost only about points.

>>16823761

It's funny because 99% of the time game design only came about as an afterthought as the people making the games were just trying to make something fun and rationalized it later on.

That being said, does anyone have that Game Designer Companion book? I thought I'd get it off of genlib but it ain't there.

What I find the zaniest about this is that nobody remembers Earthbound fondly for its gameplay mechanics, only its story. So they're just going to remake that story instead of addressing some gameplay flaws or changing things around a bit.

>>16824361

This, for fuck's sake, why not call it Papier Maria or X-Zero and just use bootleg versions of the main characters. What I liked about Pizza Tower is just that, the guy behind it clearly tries to rip off other franchises but gives a little spin to the characters, so notWario is just Wario but with a severe anxiety problem and the Noise is the Noid but angry.

I don't think it's inherently a bad thing, I love Masafumi Takada's style. I just think it highlights how the people working on the game had a very limited amount of time and/or resources to get it done, so they just made a few good tunes and kept remixing them. In NMH2 they had quite the budget to use, and they used a ton of it on jiggle physics and A listers. Frankly, I liked 1 better.

>Wouldn't a randomizer program make a more convincing mega texture?

Procedural weighting of how to place elements would lead to a more cohesive backdrop, while still lightening the workload of designing complicated backdrops, and what you said about Crash 3 is somewhat true, Skull/Bonus routes at one point were too have unique tracks however, that was eventually axed due to space and time constraints. From what I've heard a good portion of the music was done but wasn't exported. Mancell does have decompressed versions of the new bonus/special themes.

Rolling health is criminally nonpresent in rpgs. It's such a good mechanic. Music related combos from mother 3, while neat, I don't really think it's as flexible as timed action commands.
