It's not really as irrelevant as you think. Take Drakengard's OST for example. On it's own the OST can be taken as a mad man just ringing bells and stringing notes, but it fits the game so well it's looked at in a positive light. In contrast if for example an emotional death scene was accompanied with a sick power metal track, the track itself might be really good but it would not fit the game at all. It is possible and most likely is very often that a lone music album or track is better than something made to complement a movie or a game, but depending on how well it complements the vidya I think it gets a pass.

Another way of looking at it would be at story.In my opinion it doesn't matter how good or complex the story is as much as how it's told in the video game. It can be argued that for example Thief's story is inferior to say Metal Gear(I'd disagree but just run with it), but the way Thief's story is told is much better suited to a video game than how it is in a Metal Gear.

I haven't gone through many visual novels, but I do like the Ace Attorney trilogy quite a bit. Of course it could be better, but designing a game based around something as dull as the judiciary is difficult to do without resorting to simulation. Now, I suppose in the case of romance, you could have a stimulating text adventure game, but get too descriptive and people will have to be analytical and possibly misinterpret things. If you take the other route, you will end up with something as laughably embarrassing as chapter 16.5. Working within a system as structured as language to describe abstract concepts as love is will never be as successful as other means of artistic expression. Are visual novels as successful in this regard? Much of it if not all of it is grocery store book corner reading, but that modicum of potential that is there is something I cannot dismiss.

Please, you may as well pester artists who use protractors and rulers if you believe any level inhuman precision automatically disqualifies something as creative. To clear things up, you don't like the laziness that the overwhelming majority of computer animation suffers as computer animation set the bar extremely low. It is possible that you can have quality animation using CG, but why bother spending time purposefully making something asymmetrical? I don't prefer computer animation, but for the record, animators spent their time looking to make things easier on themselves. This is why for anything remotely complicated, they'd use rotoscoping, and for everything else it is extremely simple to replicate. There isn't much good CGI from what little modern anime I have watched, but eventually it will become indistinguishable, and to argue that imitation is somehow more momentous than having such a command over physical nature as to be able to imitate imitation, to impress human will itself onto existence itself and make it tangible, a thing, is derogatory to the tens of thousands of years of achievement and endeavor.

As a science fiction work it's a travesty because nothing time travel related was thought through for even five minutes, and even as science fantasy the characters are shallow, the plot is contrived and the biggest antagonist is what amounts to poor writing.

The stupid one was that it pandered to 2ch. In pretty much mentions it indirectly in several episodes. It might be the earliest "weeb dogwhistle" I can think of right now. It also made it popular in 2ch, and by extension, in a lot of weeb comunities (halfchan is 4-5 steps removed and further down the line, but it got there too).

The good detail however is something that actually pisses off a lot of people. The heavy contrasts through the whole series. It managed to juxtapose a lot of widely different people, things, attitude and themes.

You have 8 episodes where fuck all happens, and then the remainging episodes are a wild ride.

Even the protgonist constantly changes from serious to meme-loving-fuck, from determined and confident to a nerver-wracked failure.

I'm not saying any of this things are GOOD WRITING. But they were diferent from what was out at the time. I can look up what aired that season, but going from memory, you had some slice-of-life copy paste, some shounen crap with robots and a few harem animes with shy main protagonists. Not necessarily bad, but essentially the same you had the previous season. And along comes Stein's Gate, something with a story structure that looks nothing like what you've seen recently, so you're gripped and watch it. Even if you didn't particularly like it, you'd be curious to see where the fuck is all this shit going. And hey, a lot of people did drop it on those 8 initial fuck-all-happens episodes. But they saw the rest being discussed, went back to slog through them and got to the "good" part.

A more recent example would be Bakemonogatari. As plot and characters go, nothing that imaginative. Most of the side characters are walking tropes you've seen a million times. But the visuals, the weird and fucked up presentation of some scenes that would be otherwise trivial and boring. THAT is what drew people in.

The story structure in stein's gate is also kinda fucked in a particular way. I can describe it as this:

Imagine you're watching an anime that is a straight rip-off of lucky star. Just your usual slice-of-life thing. But every episode, at a random time, for 5 minutes, the show decides it wants to be Mirai Niki and have creepy/scary/weird and mysterious shit going on. Then it reverts back to slice-of-life for the rest of the episode.

Some folks I convinced to watch it had the same opinion: "It's kinda boring so far, but what the fuck is up with THAT scene?" And they'd repeat this every episode until the series decides to pick up and actually get on with it.

That's one way of taking something that is mediocre and okayish at best but still manage to get people to watch it to the end.

All of this builds toward an overarching theme of steadiness and patience in relationships, as the characters work together to stave off panic and despair. The extra OVA episode even touches on questions about whether his insight into her personality are a cheat or merely a shortcut to wooing her, and whether the memories bleeding into her mind from parallel timelines undermine the legitimacy of her attraction toward him, ultimately reconciling with the idea that they are both a gestalt of their alternate selves from every timeline. Overall, I thought it was very sweet.

Adaptations on Netflix are usually crap. Especially live action from a source material that originally wasn't like anime or cartoon. I guess this completely slipped my mind but I didn't know that Resident Evil was also picked up for Netflix. It'll probably star a black woman as the star and it won't be Sheva.

The only way to stop Netflix is to severely weaken them with the streaming wars and that doesn't seem to be going that well. Apple TV+ is dead (even though it had that fake game making show that was advertised at e3), Disney+ who'll never do anything past a PG-13 to remain family friendly, Peacock with it's trans sequel of Save by the Bell and CBS All Access that is killing Star Trek.
