I don't really care about what engine it runs on, XRay was notorious for being a buggy unworkable piece of shit, and a modern engine that supports modern workflows would do wonders for their development, if they put in the effort of course.
There's only a few STALKER devs left in GSC, the "good" ones left to form 4A and make Metro, the shittier ones made Survarium and Fear The Wolves, I don't have a mental image of the remaining devs apart from working on Cossacks 3 maybe, and I didn't play that game.
Using UE does not automatically mean that they're signed on into Epic's store shill program, but the cash might've incited them to do it anyway.
Remember that GSC already canceled the game once, laid off a good chunk of their staff, got hit by a fucking civil war in their country, and didn't sell any product worthy of note over the last decade.
They might've taken the cash and I understand since they'd actually need it, but if Pepsiman funded the game himself or sold his stupid Lambo for it, then I'll have some new found respect from him.
I'm not gonna make any sweeping statement about a game before having seen any actual gameplay, all we have is some wishy washy statements, a 3D model of bread, a desktop background and a kinda good music track.

I got Stalker from a free-cd in a gaming magazine years ago.
If I recall correctly, it was 1.004 version on it, I only discovered it had another patch (and an installer for a bonus monster that requires a passsword) years later.
Granted, I was 16 at the time, and didn't know how to computer very well.
I only remember one crash at all and that took me spamming like 20 grenades while fighting 15 soldiers or some shit. I actually though it was perfectly reasonable to crash like that.

First time someone linked me a mod, the only diference I could tell was "Uh, I can run faster? and carry more shit? This is getting boring pretty quick". Go figure: the retard linked me Complete 2009, and it took me a couple weeks until I saw a thread on /v/ with actual proper mods.
If you want to see proper bugs and weird shit, get Stalker Soup. THAT was a wild ride, and when I look back at my time in it, I think it's exactly like how people describe vannillla.

I played all 3 stalker games completely 100% vanilla. I can't really remember encountering any bugs other than people dying in the bonfires. The only one that was painful was clear skies, and it wasn't because of bugs.
