Also known by the japanese as Famicom Tantei Club Part II: Ushiro ni Tatsu Shōjo. This game is the only one of the Famicom Tantei Club series available in english. Basically, you're a young detective trying to figure out the mystery behind the murder of a schoolgirl tied to a ghost story. While the game is a little old fashioned from a technical standpoint, the visual presentation and the music are really the strong points of this SNES title. I'd recommend it to any person who consider themselves to be a fan of text adventures games like Ace Attorney or Danganronpa, even if its plot is more down to earth akin to the Kyle Hyde games on DS made by studio Cing.

For those who know about and finished it, how did you like it? After reaching the end in one sitting, I found the ending to be quite predictable, even if the road to it was enjoyable. What surprised me the most for a SNES game was the "personality analysis' at the end, which is a smart way to prompt players to try and replay the game. It also caught me off guard, since I didn't expect the game to acknowledge me insisting on examining lewd areas that much lmao.

I'd rank it 7,5/10.

Yeah, I just learned about that while trying to look for more info about the series on startpage. I'm not sure if westerners could be ready to welcome some of the jokes or slight sexual undertones, especially for a Nintendo title. Besides, I'm not a fan of the new artstyle they went with for the remake, reminds me of how YU-NO got botchered. But on the other hand, I really want to play find out what the japanese only games have in store. Should I bite the bullet and finally start learning japanese?

Imagine if NISA or XSNEED took care of the localization. His fears are valid, the only way for the western crowd to experience the series as close as possible to the original version without censorship of any kind would be through fan translations, or learning japanese.

Because he (this "company" is apparently one guy) finds the standards of that era preferential and thinks it should have continued to present, I'd wager? Similar with GhaleonUnlimited, who seems to wish that more companies would have aspired to be like Working Designs, but it seems as if he's somewhat relented since the initial release and made multiple versions of the patch for people with different preferences of how they'd want the game to read. Still, at least for Phantasy Star IV, there's always the option of the official English script (for better or worse), but those two idol games WFC worked on will likely never see a retranslation or a restoration patch, being that the audience is low and they're playable in English already, and I doubt that chode will make alternate patches for them what with his clear stance on how he thinks games ought to be.

On a (barely) related note, it would seem a PS1 RPG called Brave Prove got an English patch the other day. Hoping it's a decent patch, but the fact that the main editor/producer is also a writer for HG101 worries me a bit. Rest of the translation/editing staff involved seem alright though.

I'm not aware of him actually forbidding anyone else from working on a project he claims; it's probably more like the translation community, out of some misplaced sense of politeness, doesn't start a project if it's apparent someone else has

Should probably clarify the state of that Phantasy Star IV patch, as checking between making those posts, I was actually surprised to see the project page a lot bigger than I recall. It’s basically got the following versions now:

>Generation 4: Sega Ages: Uses terminology from the fan translations of the PS2 remakes of Phantasy Star I and II for cohesion with those who’ve played the first two games that way; claims it to be the most “accurate” to the Japanese intent.

>Generation 4: Recommended: Almost the same as the first but with the original English technique names.

>Generation 4: NO JOKE: Excises his attempt at WDs-tier localization. “The author stands by the main version, but doesn’t want those with different preferences to miss out on the improved story.”

>SMS Classic: Uses the terminology from the previous Master System and Genesis English releases and ALL CAPS rendering the original version of IV had.

In any case, I’d still question that the NO JOKE version is wholly accurate. He kind of tainted trust there in releasing his attempt at making a Working Designs script as the only version at the time, and what reviews it's had are specifically from that time. No one seems to have reviewed any of the alternate patches. But, if he did actually do a properly translated version, he’s still a faggot, but one that can at least be bullied into doing something decent (though it still took him almost two years to see fit to do) instead of digging in his heels, doubling down, and making everyone suffer for his shit taste in localization into the future.

>>16816495

>changed practically some of the script in smt 2 from its source

Do you mean Zhi threw his weight around as project manager to get that enforced? Because like most projects AG releases, he's not accredited in a translation or editorial role there. He usually serves as hacker/hoster/promoter/project manager. SMT I, II, and if… all have their translations attributed to an Ian Kelley, with no one actually listed as editor. Doesn't excuse the glitch in SMT I though; as hacker, that was entirely on him to have noticed and fixed before release, or to have made an updated debugged patch, but he didn't do either, and someone else had to "unofficially" make a fixed version. Biggest kickers are that the readme for the AG translation release still say there's nothing wrong with the patch, and the RHDN page for it passes the blame for the glitch to the player for being too stupid to use the right ROM dump.

Certainly a cunt though, what with being the "face" of the projects he's handled getting him to bulk of attention (you don't see mention of the translators or other staff much on his site, even on the project pages, as if it's all him), telling SMT fans to "clean up their community" because he finds them toxic or something, the aforementioned sitting on projects and not doing anything with them for years at a time, and up and trashing work because either he or the other people involved bit off more than they could chew (thirty "active" projects a year or two ago; down to twenty one at present), out of likely respect for a publisher finally releasing the game in English (Romancing SaGa 2), or in one case refusing to cancel OR release a game's patch because the fan translation script got licensed and he wants to market the official release like he gets a kickback from the sales (Magical Drop 2).

>>16816536

Even if he's not officially, he's certainly got something of celebrity status in the fan translation community for his group having so many releases and lasting twenty years. Given the nature of namefag communities, I wouldn't be surprised if people don't want to step on his toes.

Maybe Tex Murphy Mean Streets? You are a private detective in San Francisco in, year 2030, and of course you get to fly around the state n you flying car. It actually makes you feel like a detective, since you need to write keywords when interrogating witnesses, and you have to basically write them down in your IRL notebook, as the game does not provide you with one. Go from place to place, ask questions, solve puzzles and try not to die(save often). The second game, is a standard P&C adventure game, which is decent but not as good as the first, while the rest are FMV games, that are more humorous(like Pink Panther) than the first game which was more serious in tone.

Far as I know, script ripping isn't necessarily as hard compared to the debugging and hacking hurdles insertion has, but does vary from game to game depending on where it's stored, how it's called, and whether it's in the code in the same way it displays. 46 Okumen have an interesting article on how they did so to work on the English patch for the predecessor to E.V.O.: Search for Eden, but their site's down at the moment due to not enough bandwidth.

If you're wanting some ideas on stuff with existing demand, maybe consider Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut for the PS2? Not exactly being sat on so much as having been totally shitcanned by Absolute Zero (so they wouldn't have conflict of interest in becoming community managers for Bamco or something), and unless you count Kajitani's annual shitposts, there's really no active English Tales groups left. The other thing going for Destiny DC is that at least one person out there, Kingcom, knows something of how to work with the code already. Though whether he'd be willing to help, or even still has the tools he made (for all I know, they belonged to the project, and not him), is another issue.

>>16817180

>It's also likely that it's to avoid the chance of doing a huge amount of work only for the original guy working on it to unexpectedly release and make it all for nothing.

That too. And in a few cases where more than one fan translation finished, like Mystic Ark, it's hard to even find opinion on which is better. Most people just seem to gravitate towards whatever came first unless one has something particularly noteworthy that's either wrong with it or better than the other.

>I've been hemming and hawing over a translation effort for just that reason myself.

First off, don't pick chronicles. For no god damned reason they cut at least half the game out and the translation is exceptionally bad.

Second, even toned down they still tried to Phoenix Wright the script for memories of the past and the 3DS game, and it doesn't work at all because it's quite obvious the game still takes place in Japan, hence why Italian mobsters take you to an ancient Japanese Styled mansion.
