Slain! is mediocre. It's one of those games like Blasphemous, MGRRevengance, Bayo and the later Darksiders games where the cornerstone of the combat is dodging/parrying at the right time for a counter-hit and that counterhit is stronger than anything else you've got going for you and it has a relatively massive window for it. It's worth a play but nothing else especially since the secret collectible of the game makes you practically invincible against the final boss. I haven't played Valfaris so I can't speak on it.

At least in the examples you mentioned, you can still do fun things without the dodge mechanic, and that's coming from someone who sucks at dodging/guarding, so something like Blasphemous is still fun if you don't parry, Slain! isn't, not to mention that the parry mechanic actually was added in a revision of the game, the original release didn't have it, so I had to experience the slow as fuck "combat" which is basically trade with the enemy until they are dead.

It played fine, music was commercial but still real metal, characters weren't annoying, story was fine, environments took inspiration from metal album covers, the transition from action hack&slash into 3rd person RTS made sense in terms of story (stakes are higher, more people are involved in the whole thing). It can get repetitive, and combat isn't exactly cuhrayzeee, but I still don't understand why people seem to hate it so much.

Yeah I can't empathize with anyone that said it was good at all. I got bored with that game maybe halfway through, but I went and searched for the games soundtrack just because I was morbidly curious about anything that I missed. There was exactly one track that had a nice tribute to Quake's soundtrack and that was the only good part about it.
I had no idea that the composer demanded that no metal be in the soundtrack though. That just makes him seem childish at best. He could have seen it as an opportunity to grow as an artist and try something different, instead he threw a tantrum just so he could put ear rape in the game.
