>What is it?
The product of Richard Garriott's and NCSoft's efforts back in 2003. Base game was locked behind a subscription and contained only a limited amount of content, but as time went on, this was remedied through expansion packs. At one point in a development process, the game's balance was fucked up VERY hard, so the consensus between what players there are left is that it's better to play on earlier versions of the game. We are playing on a Classic version of the game, which close to base game as it was released, but not quite.
>Why play this?
This game is rather unique, it forces people to play together to survive in the vast wilderness of the grinding fields - killing people and getting killed in turn is very easy if you have shit gear for your level and even with good gear it is still easy. Every death is a static -4% EXP penalty and on the later levels, generic monsters will only give out around 0.05% of your EXP bar. Quests are more or less useless in that regard, so fast-paced party grinding is the order of the day.
Top spots for grinding and money-making on top levels, however, are usually strictly occupied by powerful clans leveling in big parties that will kill you and take no prisoners in order to rake gigantic amounts of money in materials and make their +10 overenchanted staves into +12 ones. Some of them are not unreasonable and/or Brazillian and can be negotiated with, however. With proper funding made from excessive amounts of grind, it is possible for anons to gather one big party and apply copious amounts of strategy to find out ways to better kill the enemy without dying ourselves.
Even so, it's fun to grind things together and kill other fags together.

Human:
>Warlord: Designated AoE class with a spear. With proper skills and equipment, can solo 20-30 monsters at a time. Best at AoE parties, has a ranged stun for PvP. Decent damage.
>Gladiator: Kill things with dualswords. Ranged stun, close range damage. DPS moves require charging up. Single-target DPS, great up close but not useless at range.
>Paladin: Tank with shitty heals. Tanks generally don't do well in PvP unless they have some sort of crowd control, but he only gets a melee stun and close-range root. Valued at Raid Boss parties for being a tank.
>Dark Avenger: Tank with a pet and a high-chance fear spell - that alone makes him great. The meta choice. The edgier (and better) Paladin. Good at RB parties and PvP.
>Treasure Hunter: Designated PK class. Dagger users have a skill that deals huge CP-piercing damage from behind, capable of one-shotting characters with shit armor. Human daggers get a +40 speed 15 second buff at level 20 which turns into +66 speed at level 46. That alone makes them FUN.
>Hawkeye: Bow user class that can convert own HP into MP. As a tradeoff, his unique ability roots himself for attack and range increase. Demerit lowers to speed decrease at later levels.
>Sorcerer: The most "balanced" mage. Compared to other mages, he doesn't get access to Curse Death Link (nuke that scales with health missing) or Spellsinger's cast speed (delete MP and enemy HP in seconds), but can keep killing shit for longer before running dry of mana. Gets AoE spells earlier. Trash at endgame because CDL and Spellsinger cast speed are so good.
>Necromancer: The meta choice. Gets a summon, ability that redirects half of incoming damage to summon and Curse Death Link. Can blow up enemy corpses for AoE damage. Great for PvP (doesn't die as much because of summon + CDL), RB's (nuke with CDL), AoE parties (blow up corpses) and everything else. If you want a mage, only level Necro.
>Warlock: Human summoner with a cat. All summoners except Dark Elf get infinite mana because it's possible for a summon to refill caster's mana and then resummon it - ability has a short cooldown. Warlock can heal with that infinite mana. Can AoE root.
>Bishop: Make no one else die in your party. Top tier healing spells and a very shitty matk nuke. Buff for maxhp and more EXP after revival. Almost no buffs or ability to deal damage. For insane faggots only.
>Prophet: All-in-one buff stop shop. Single-target. Haste 2 makes autoattacks and skills go faster, Acumen 3 makes spells go faster, Greater Might makes things hit harder, Greater Shield makes things take less damage, Blessed Body/Soul increases HP/MP bars. However, it's a buffer. More than that, we already have one that's more or less leveled.

Elf:
>Temple Knight: Meta tank focused on defense. Shitty heal, cubics, decent crowd control. Shield defense in all directions, meaning can kite very well. Loses to Shillien Knight and Dark Avenger in PvP ability. The PvE choice for a tank.
>Sword Singer: Unique Song buffs for the whole party mostly focused on defense that stack with everything else. Doubles critical rate, increases health, PDEF, MDEF, HP bar, etc etc. Has a shitty heal, slowdown and a paralysis.
>Plains Walker: Dagger with a shitty heal. Nothing special until 3rd profession, where he gets an ability that gives 999999 physical evasion for a short period of time, at which point he can bravely die against mages.
>Silver Ranger: Bow user with a shitty heal. Noticing a pattern here? Can increase own rate of fire and reduce range. All archers get a ranged stun and a DPS ability though, so they have that at least.
>Spellsinger: Mage user. Specialty is increasing cast speed to the point of madness. Effectiveness scales directly to worn equipment and weapon. Main nuke doesn't directly reveal characters's position, giving a chance to fire off more water blasts before the enemy tries to kill you back.
>Elemental Summoner: Summoner with a pony. Can farm AoE with a summon ability and make infinite mana. Can also stun. RB parties want it, AoE parties want it, decent at mass PvP, great at leveling because the cat gives more single-target DPS.
>Elven Elder: Refill other people's mana. Every class wants mana. Resurrect other people with best exp% brought back. Everyone wants more EXP. More stun resistance, heals, instant party teleport to town. Immobilize things. Great if you have it, but good luck leveling this up because it can't deal damage without help.

Dark Elf:

>Spellhowler: Dark Elf mage with Curse Death Link. He's not sorcerer tier just because of CDL. More damage, less cast speed means he gets more value out of mana.
>Phantom Summoner: Summoner that doesn't get infinite MP, but has really good stats on his summon instead. For comfy singleplayer grinding.
>Shillien Elder: Refill other people's mana. Every class needs mana. Debuff Weapon Atk resistance and MDEF resistance (stacks with Hex, great for RB's), buff Empower (MATK +55-75%) and Vampiric Rage (melee attacks recover HP), heals. Similarly a pain to level.

Orc:
>Destroyer: Close range big-sword-kills-big-things. Has two self-buffs that increase defense by a lot and damage by a lot respectively that can be activated when character is at low health. Can AoE with a spear, but no long-range abilities, so expect to die to ranged damage in PvP if there is any and if there is too much distance. Gets a skill called Rush at 3rd profession that closes distances between them and the enemy instantly, which makes for a FUN surprise.
>Tyrant: As gladiator, but with fists instead. Powerful self-buffs and slowdown CC. Many nukes, can AoE. Can only use fists.
>Overlord: Buffs entire clans instead of parties. Buffs clans AND parties on this server, has AoE damage, AoE root, high-chance sleep. Doesn't have Haste 2 that Warcryer and Prophet has. It's still a buffer, which means that leveling it is pain.
>Warcryer: As Prophet, but buff a full party instead. Great for buffing full parties. Gets to summon the entire party to where he's at at 3rd profession. Decent crowd control skills (high-chance sleep), but since he's likely to have zero MP most of the time because most of it was spent on buffs, he's not good in a fight and leveling it is hard.

>Warsmith: Compared to Bounty Hunter, has only one stun, but has a jank mechanical golem to make up for it. Can craft things if he has a recipe and can put up shops for other people to craft things with own recipes. The other jew class. Can make siege golems during Castle Sieges and also gets Rush at 3rd profession. There are a lot of them at Giran Harbor, ready to jew you out of gold for their recipes and it's generally not worth it to level them just for crafting. The clan has one already.

1) You get fish, which can be converted into a variety of different fish stews such as attack power, experience gain(this is great for when a boss dies because bosses award massive amounts of exp), or even life leech.
2) You get experience proportional to your level every time you catch a fish. The fishing is automatic so it repeats as long as you have fishing bait and lures. It takes 2 minutes to fish, so if you are going to be away from your computer for 12 hours, you may as well set up fishing because the EXP you can get from fishing is equivalent to killing 360 monsters.
3) You have a chance to catch a golden treasure chest. These chests contain scrolls that let you cast defensive spells, cast power area of effect, become invisible, or even teleport to random locations in the game world.
4) You can sell the stews for a steady stream of income. The experience gain stew and life leech stew are very popular choices. You can generate upwards of 200,000 adena a day fishing which can then pay for ammo/consumables while you are leveling up.

We kind of need someone to actively play a tank class for group grinding. The person who was playing a tank for us has stopped logging in. Summoners are always wanted in a party for their heals and they make great solo characters too. Mana for mages is slow though, so if you don't like resting in between battles you should probably pick a physical damage dealing class. Warlord is a strong pick as they have a ton of aoe. Ultimately, just be yourself. Play what you want to.

Also, the game is really simple mechanically and clan chat is really helpful for answering questions. The game is very similar to EQ. The biggest hurdle is probably getting used to the pre-WoW controls as they feel a little bit clunky until you get used to them.

Being a buffer is kind of hard to level up without already having a character you can use to support it. We have a buffer that is level 58 right now that some of the members share it buffing our groups. Play what you want to, but for your first character you will probably enjoy a different class more. There isn't a hard cap to the number of people you can bring to fight stuff, so just about anything you want to play is useful in some capacity.

Sounds good. I suggest a physical damage class unless you REALLY want to play a mage. Mages have a bit of downtime via sitting to recover mana. Summoners get an ability at 40(I think) that gives them a mana battery from their pet so they kind of break that mold.

It's not that it's hard, the grind will just completely murder you, tenderize your corpse and leave no bones behind. It's why making a warrior character is recommended - they can kill things with autoattacks and vampiric stews solo relatively fast enough. Mages get to kill things the fastest, but they also need mana to do so and without support from recharger classes like Elven Elder or Shillien Elder they're just buffer-tier when it comes to grinding solo. Buffers, Bishops and rechargers (at least Shillien Elder has Stigma to help) have it the toughest - they deal trash damage and need to use top gear to level solo and it takes the longest then.
WE CAN SUPPLY WHOEVER JOINS WITH D GEAR WHEN THEY TAKE 20 AND C GEAR WHEN THEY TAKE 40 - ASK FOR THAT IN CLAN CHAT WHEN FAGS ARE ONLINE
That said, we're kinda poor at the moment, so it may take some time.

As mentioned before, everyone present helps, even if it's only just a little for bad classes. To be present though, you need to level up to catch up to us and it is far easier to grind for a warrior solo (autoattack kills shit fast enough that there is no need to worry about anything) than the rest of the classes (mages have to sit for 3-5 minutes for each minute of grind without rechargers, buffers have to melee things under top gear, buffs and potions and HOPE they don't get PK'd by a passerby nignog). Raid Boss parties in LFG make it easier - after completing an RB, at around 23 you can get around 4 levels at a time, but it starts to fall off - 1 level at around 40 and half at around 50 (under normal EXP scrolls from levelup rewards).
Mages perform better at PvP and endgame and Buffers help the entire grinding party just by being there (though the clan already has a buffer leveled so that no one has to go through the suffering of grinding a buffer again, so there is less merit in picking these). Pick whatever you like so that you won't quit the game as it's very hard to level more than one character, but know that mages and buffers get really shafted solo exp-wise.
In unrelated news, we got extremely rich today.

I hate this game for two reasons: My friend and his normalfag friends didn't shut the fuck up about it, like I swear to god. And the other, relatively more reasonable one is the focus on having to socialize. I know I'm a minority and some fags may come with "the point of MMO games is socialize", well, fuck you, the reason I play video games is to stay away from people. In this game you can't literally walk by yourself without getting fucked by the contrary faction, let alone doing mission because mobs either gang you or you don't have enough survivability by yourself, and not like in WoW Classic that with patience you could do them, this is literally undoable since if I remember correctly, some missions required you to be in a party.
Not saying it's shit or anything, I liked the wings gimmick and stuff, but even the gameplay was very mediocre, the typical korean MMO. I may give it a try just to play with /v/, but eh…
The only MMO I remember fondly is Tales of Pirates and Eden Eternal, because of how enjoyable they are by yourself and in the case of Eden Eternal, fucking class changes as much as you fucking want. The other game I always wanted to play was Tera, but never could because my PC was shit, but the gameplay seemed kind of interesting, if nothing else.

I agree, saying Tales of Pirates was an stretch: In no way I'm saying it's a good game, I'm saying I enjoyed it more, it's just comfy, and man, the music. At the very least, I didn't need to be careful some asshole from an opposing faction wanted me dead, and disputing special mobs was always fun.
I'm definitively way more into Eden Eternal, though, changing classes makes the game a lot more fun, and you can even do dungeons by yourself, limited, for less exp, but you can get the boss items.

i'll give you that it was really comfy, but it ends up being a chore. if you enjoy games where you can change jobs at will and don't have to "build" your character for a specific endgame from the beginning, you could try FFXI.

Thats the problem with this game. You get to about 65 and realise that its not going to get anymore interesting or have any depth to it. Its just a gambling simulator with auto-attacks. Theres almost zero reason to work with anyone else or do anything as a group. Its a mmo where you grind, and sometimes other people fuck up your grind. Also absurdly low drop-rates so you can spend 8 hours seeing zero return on your time.
