I just wanted to get this out because when the game was first coming out there was a lot of cool narrative shit being thrown around in the opening cinematic of the game I remember before launch and when I take a closer look at the game years later, they've just wasted all of it but it's very clear when looking through a few characters specifically.

>Necalli

>Seen in the opening having a fight with Ryu

>Said fight pushes him to using Satsui no Hado and ends on a visual going back on Necalli

>Character story on release before actual story mode comes out

>Prophecies how he's not a normal man who only appears to eat the souls of the strong

>Appears to be like a mud manikin that no one can really hurt and proceeds to eat Ryu, Dhalsim and Bison in his Prophecy

>Suddenly the Evil Ryu visual makes sense because Satsui No Hado destroys souls

>Could be a cool motif to tie into why Satsui No Hado isn't an issue later because Ryu'd have got over it after being able to use it for the righteous purpose of ending Necalli and saving people

>Bison instead of having literally any issue scares him away

>Instead Ryu gut punches him using the "power of nothingness" which he gets out of no where, Dhalsim mocks Necalli right after saying he'll be on world star or some shit if he stays.

>In Akumas later story mode he gets blown up from the inside

>New villain character dies a joke death to build up an already built up villain

>Nash and Bison

>Also opening

>Nash is one of the few people who's actually been able to legit beat bison and needed to be gunned down by a chopper for Bison to win

>Is revived up with the thought of Bison in his mind and immediate claws open out of grave, not even a delay in trying to comprehend he might have been dead

>Bison earlier on in the fight is shown being able to deal with Ken, Cammy and Chun Li fine

>While Bison is victoriously raising up, Nash appears and begins chasing up to him

>During their clash at the end of the opening both Bisons hat and Nashes Dog tag are shown being launched away implying mutual destruction

>Story mode even says using Nash because of his ability to beat Bison is a planned thing by Illuminati

>Story mode happens

>They set it up arguably well

>Later villain group is shown to have revived him using Nash as a weapon to remove Bison and giving him his revenge is merely an added bonus for Nash

>What actually happens in story mode is Nash self destructs and does fuck all worth of damage to Bison and Ryu just beats him up with his new instant gratification powers

>Not even alive to potentially reuse him again later and Bison has infinite body BS to come back if they want

>Ed

>Is introduced in Balrogs SF4 arcade ending on his Hand glowing in a emblems shape

>Is shown to have Bisons powers in story mode but he doesn't appear prominently

>throughout Eds story he fears losing his being to Bison and keeps waking up to nightmares during it

>Menat shows his fate isn't predictable at all

>Is taught to fight like Balrog and is cared for by Balrog even when Balrog has no obligation to since part way through eds story Bison already lost

>Using the power he has and skills Balrog Taught him he kicked out what part of Bison was causing his nightmares

>Decides when he does wake up he should leave because his power keeps growing stronger

>Ends up in a fight with Balrog over him not wanting Ed to leave and turns to cry when he loses telling him to get lost

>Story mode ends with Ed now being super confident and all grown up now with his Hand Glowing in the emblems shape like in SF4

>Says his Destiny is his to write while walking along side his crew of 3 others including Falke, a Scientist and a Cyborg Gorilla

>Nearly 3 years later only Falke has been added to the game but they've included adding Urien, Seth, Gill and absolute literal whos like Abbigale

>Falke story hints that all of Eds group might be Bison Clones with power like him

>They've introduced a potential new antagonist who learned Balrogs Dirty boxing who's got Bisons Psycho power who's also part of a squad of Bison clones but decided instead of capitalising on that they're just going to include Gill who has no stakes in the story because this isn't the end of the timeline.

What absolute monkey is out here writing characters with interesting shit behind them but then deciding that there should be no more from there?

You've got enough characters with on going story shit in the roster set up to have multiple arcs of like a battle manga but decide to sleep on shit like this for no reason.

Reminder the Beta was entirely differently balanced then the characters were in the final product for the worst, looks aside people were hopeful at the time.

I liked the stories in alpha, they were short and sweet besides 3 which was the same for everyone besides bison.

SF has always been garbage in story because the writers are retards. It used to be "here are a bunch of cultural stereotypes trying to win money at a tournament hosted by an evil organization, can they overcome the challenges and maybe do something about the true nature of the tournament?" Then with the Alpha and 3 series they tried to expand the plot even further and brought up plenty of interesting questions (although still had flawed storytelling in some spots), and then 4 came out and ruined every point of intrigue the series had by basically retelling 2's story verbatim but saying it was a different point in the timeline.

What used to just be something simple got thrown out the window the moment SF4 came along and was the blackest stain on the whole series I actually enjoy SFV, I think it has the best kinesthetic feel since Third Strike. I agree with everyone that it had a shitty launch but it's evolved over time and has gotten over most of its launch problems, and is actually a fine and serviceable game as of right now. I main Abigail.

They've had since the Alpha series to wrap up the Shadaloo storyline and instead they ended up writing two more "prequel" games to Third Strike that still don't give it a satisfying conclusion. It would've been much better if they just continued the story from 3S for 5 instead of writing it as another prequel to 3S.

They don't do enough to make the characters feel special within the story, some characters just have no reason to be there (like Birdie, who was done dirty by getting redesigned into a fat oaf - didn't they already have Rufus for a comedy fat character?).

I'd have liked it if the characters were all more familiar with each other depending on which "tournament" they were from - All the SF2 characters could be said to be from the "second" tournament, SF3 characters from the "third tournament", SF4 characters from the "fourth tournament" and so on. That way there'd be a new character dynamic to them all meeting each other. I'd also like them to expand on the idea of every character having some sort of special superhuman ability, which is the idea of "ki" - fighting energy that is possessed by every living being on Earth and that can be channeled in different ways by people around the world.
