Given the state of chans, I think this is a VERY relevant question.
Clearly, the answer is that there isn't a point anymore. The games themselves are little more than vehicles for advertising and marketing (including political propaganda) or datamining, and because the hardware is all connected to the internet anymore there is little need for the intermediate link which is what journalism/media was used for. They (game companies and the advertisers who back them) never cared about users as anything more than a revenue source. They never cared whether we were happy with the games. When we hated one they would pat us on the head and tell us to wait until the next one.
Now they don't even need to do that. The games will be marketed to us and advertised whenever we connect to the internet.
In large part, that is why chans are also failing. They are simply not necessary anymore for most subjects, including vidya. Everything that chans served as is now available as an in-game feature in most games. TBH, it works better that way as you don't get the off-topic assholes who just want to shit up the place. You want to talk about a game, you fire up the game and talk about it with the anons who actually play it.
It is the whole "internet of things" effect, and it is rendering journalism and many other institutions superfluous and irrelevant.

Maybe it's my autism, but I don't even understand what's the punchline of that comic is supposed to be, or how it's supposed to be funny or clever. I understand the point he's trying to make in the first panel but the second panel makes no sense to me.
