Class based squad game. You pick your squad and then control them from first person in real time. You aren't forced to be stealthy but the game gets order of magnitudes harder if you get in gunfights. The AI is really stupid, which kinda ties into the humor of the game, so it's easy enough to escape when you get in a fight. You also have a lot of respawns but your agents don't respawn with gear. So if you die in a really stupid spot you have to still get your gear back.

>Copy Kitty
Basically Kirby VR Missions. The 3D models are a bit on the amateurish side but I really love the gameplay, you have three slots for weapons siphoned off enemies and you can combine them(it does all weapons at once as to limit how many weapons you need to cycle through) for an additional fourth weapon.
There's also a kick move you can do to guard against attacks or even reflect projectiles. It's pretty neat. The music is also really good.

I think Rainworld was made by hree or four people, although it is published by Adult Swim. Technically indie means not having a publisher (indepentent) but I'd say it still counts. And it's one of the greatest games of all time in my opinion.

I've been enjoying Hardcore Mecha recently, despite the stupid name. It's another 2D mecha action game. Pretty good for being made by a bunch of chinks. You unfortunately only have one mech for the campaign, but there's a ton available in multiplayer and the new simulation mode they added. Crimson Flame is a stupid cool mech and I really want a model kit of it.

Just beat Blasphemous with all but like two items I missed.
>the good
-The setting, art style, and atmosphere are amazing, and it's interesting seeing a game world heavily inspired by Catholicism.
-The combat feels chunky and satisfying, while meshing well with the exploration-focused platforming.
-There's a great sense of progression in player skill where sections that felt challenging the first time through feel like a breeze in subsequent runthroughs during backtracking.
-Not frustratingly difficult but not easy. I felt like my skills were always being tested but I never felt I hit a difficulty cliff (except for one certain boss)
<the bad
-There's a severe lack of QoL features, like map markers for things you've found but were unable to reach or a map percentage counter.
-There's a category of item for essentially accessing otherwise unreachable areas, but you can only equip three at once, which is pointless as they otherwise offer no gameplay advantage and you can pause at any time to switch them out
-One of the previously mentioned items makes absolutely no sense from a logical perspective in how it works
-Certain mechanics aren't explained well, and the method for getting the best ending is horribly obtuse in a simply frustrating fashion and a bit counter-intuitive.
-Some of the rewards for a few of the more involved challenges were rather disappointing
-It's a bit buggy. I had one puzzle be broken until I reset the room, several map tiles just wouldn't fill out, and I once left a room's boundaries by accident. Nothing was game breaking or set back progress, though.

I was rooting around my downloads folder, found a game called Into The Breach and decided to install it. It's made by the devs of FTL: Faster Than Light, and it manages to fix every single problem I had with that game while improving everything that worked.
They're both rougelikes with a focus on tight resource management, customization and unit co-ordination. But instead of FTL's sloppy, real time w/pause RNG bullshit, it's all crisp, addictive, turn based tactics gameplay that rewards you for thinking three steps ahead like a chess player. Instead of a mere list of ships, you can mix and match a huge selection of units to form custom squads. Instead of a linear path of sterile, repetitive sectors you get four distinct environments and a final dungeon to clear in any order. It's got me completely hooked.
But no one fucking talks about the game. FTL was a cultural phenomenon and this gets nothing.

FTL was talked about more probably because indie games were bigger then, now a lot of the hype has died down and thus they get discussed less. I tried Into The Breach when it first came out and didn't enjoy it much but at least it seemed to have a decent challenge unlike FTL.

Pretty good pixelart graphics no mixels or rixels as far as I remember, though it does use era-accurate rotational animation for some bosses, not exactly groundbreaking story but pretty funny at times, and most importantly good gameplay and (optional) challenge.
If this game had come out years earlier I think it'd have been listed aside cave story as an indie darling, but in our reality it just got pretty much completely overlooked.

Battle Brothers - Turn Based Combat game in which you manage a company of mercenaries, RNG heavy, still getting DLC releases/updates but at this point the full package (game+DLCs) is starting to get a bit pricey.
Monolith - Shmup with a similar level structure to Binding of Isaac, except unlike BoI it doesn't suck. Just got a massive DLC release which I can't comment on as I haven't bought it yet
Underrail - Subterranean Sci-Fi CRPG, quite combat focused (lead dev's favorite game is Icewind Dale 2), build balance is a tad janky as are some other facets of the game but it's a hoot overall. Game is still receiving regular updates with future plans for expansions/DLCs. A run can easily takes dozens of hours.
Steamworld Heist - The only Steamworld game worth playing, turn based combat somewhat similar to worms with a focus on ricocheting bullets to hit targets indirectly. It's fun but of the pool of characters you can pick from some outstrip the others so hard you'd be foolish to use the less optimal ones on harder difficulties. Could also be viewed as somewhat easy (try not to savescum).
Exanima - Dungeon crawler in development hell serving as an Hors D'oeuvre for Sui Generis, a larger RPG based on the same engine/tech. Uses dynamic physics based system for attacks and entity physics rather than canned attack animations. Can be a bit awkward to get used to but is a very novel experience.
N++ - Very slick platformer, you probably know about it/have seen it already, try it out, tons of levels, feels great, active mappers, etc, it's a hoot.
Running with Rifles - Silly/somewhat casual third person shooter that could tentatively be called a milsim, mostly MPvE or PvPvE, has a neat looting system that lets you collect rare guns and other items from enemy soldiers (note it in no way involves lootboxes/MTs). Features a WWII Japanese theater expansion with another expansion based in Europe in WWII on the way.
Towerclimb - Very slick roguelite platformer with no metaprogression/unlockables bullshit. Don't be put off by the artstyle or interpolation (the latter can be disabled) on steam preview images, this is a damn solid platformer. Levels are randomized with novel hazards and randomly placed items you can use to your advantage. Developers are planning to release an expansion some time this century.
Unexplored - Neat roguelite that sticks very closely to traditional roguelike conventions. Has a few AI/map generation issues but has no close equivalents on the market. Various mechanics are inspired by Brogue and the combat system rewards good timing.

Surprised you didn't bring up Age of Decadence. It's a hardcore RPG with eight different starting backgrounds, six factions with various storylines (which you can betray at almost any point), excellent writing and challenging (but RNG based) combat - which isn't obligatory, you can just make a charisma-based character like a trader that doesn't fight (and doesn't have to). People complain about graphics these people are unredeemable faggots, but it's not that bad. Also 10/10 replayability, because it's impossible to discover everything and achieve everything in one playthrough.
The developers are currently making another game, this time in a sci-fi setting.

I started playing this and it's a pain in the ass with all the roundabouts. I reached the maroon valley now and I swear there is a roundabout that takes the whole fucking area, and when I traced it back trying to find the start of it I ended up at one of those deactivated jumping ramps, I spent like 15 fucking minutes trying to find the start of the roundabout only for the fucking game to go "lol this is for later".
Also I hate the soulless ginger cunt who who does that stupid cat face and is constantly rubbing in my face that she's programmed to win all the fucking dungeon races no matter how quickly I finish them. And then the fucking game is constantly forcing her into my party and my character is not even allowed to hate her.
Oh and the MMO setting is absolutely destroying all my interest in the story and the world, because I know it's all fake in-universe. I'm looking at my list of quests and there is like 30 of them active at a time, but then I realize that I don't give a fraction of a fuck about even a single one of them, it's all busywork.
Imma end this rant here because I'm making myself pissed again. I don't know what is it about this game that's pushing my buttons so much but I swear it's like someone designed it specifically to troll me.

Like some of the recommendations here. Especially Blasphemous, Kingdom Rush. Thumper and Copy Kitty. Definitely seem under the radar. I will toss in some of my recommendations as well.
>Mushroom Wars
If you like Mini RTS strategy games you will like this. Its simple to play but hard to master. You take and overwhelm the Mushroom forts and basically once they are all taken out you win at the map. There is Mushroom Wars 2 which i have not played yet but i heard good things.
>Eufloria
Similar to Mushroom Wars except it is way more relaxed, colorful, and is good if you do not like any intensive RTS stuff. Can complete missions in 15-30 minutes or less.
>PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate
Would definitely recommend this if you like Kingdom Rush. While you may not have troops it is a solid and challenging Tower Defense game with a lot of life in it. Especially with the Ultimate version with a lot of additional maps and features.

The Messenger is retarded good across the board; the GRAFIX are as good as pixelshit gets, the music is completely banging, the gameplay is slicker than ceiling wax and the writing is hilarious and clever.
My main quibble would be that the combat could have used a bit more depth; some sort of block/parry, more secondary weapons, more upgrades and more enemy types could have spiced things up a bit.
