Is there a more insulting sequel than this?
>turn protagonist into a whiny unlikeable retard
>previous games characters suddenly go against everything they stood for in the previous games (i.e. Lloyd striving for the best possible outcome for everybody who deserves it to disappearing for 95% of the game then doing nothing when someone tries to sacrifice themself)
>nonsensical scenes and characters doing things that make no sense (Lloyd's former companions standing around while Emil tries to kill him)
>combat is a complete step down from the previous games with limp-dick combat and shitty pokemon-wannabe features thrown in
>90% of dungeons are reused and yet somehow worse than their originals
>courage is the magic that kills the tales of series
What is even the state of the Tales of series anymore? The last ~10 games have been mediocre to garbage and yet somehow they continue to sell.

Even afte rSymphonia 2 They still had enough left in them to make 1 final kinoge though

Tales of Xillia was actually pretty good although visibly unfinished. A lot of features are missing and its obvious that there were meant to be two divergent endings(perhaps even two entirely separate campaigns past the midway point) but overall the story is very decent and actually somewhat clever in how it handles its subject matter.
Cant speak for the sequel and Zestiria pretty much shat the bed right at the begging when it straight up tells you you are the good chosen man boy. Thus deflating any tension the story could have had. Berseria looks fine but I only started with that one.

> The last ~10 games have been mediocre to garbage
So what you're saying is, even at their worst, they're still better than the vast majority of JRPGs on the market. I see them kind of as the backbone JRPG now that Phantasy Star went Online Services and Final Fantasy imploded.
But, I've only played a handful of them. Abyss, Symphonia, Vesperia, Zesteria, and Berseria. Of those, I liked Vesperia the best, and Symphonia a close second. Berseria had it's flaws - but some of the characters make up for lacking gameplay. I actually liked Velvet, but Magilou was great and Elanor was pretty cute too. Eizen and Rokurou were pretty bro. So that helped. I almost can't believe Zesteria occurred in the same world. It had one of the blandest cast of characters I've ever seen in an RPG. Even Edna was only likable for about the first hour or so and then her writing fell apart. Zaveid was ok, I guess. The story was really basic as fuck as well, with really no good twists or connections between antagonist and protagonist. You pretty much NEED to play Berseria just to have any clue as to who Maotelus is or why you should care - but since it's the game that came first, none of the character development that went into Laphicet in Berseria is present.
I never made it all the way through Abyss. I got tired of Luke's shit about the same time the rest of the party abandoned his sorry ass. I should probably go back and fix that since I'm on a Tales kick anyhow.
Also, Rita x Estelle make a cute couple. I know it's not technically canon, but I like to think they got together and I hope they lived a long and happy life together. Though if they're anything like the typical lesbian relationship, it probably ended in obesity, a pile of cats, and domestic abuse.

Yeah but there are objective elements to tier lists, such as certain games missing features or scenes, or being terrible ports, and certain lists state preferred chronological order if there's internal canon.
I think every Tales game is standalone unless they share the same name (such as the Symphonia games), and the Zestiria port is stuck at 30fps on PC.

I've played:
Tales of Eternia (Solo)
Tales of Symphonia (With friends)
Tales of the Abyss (With friends)
Tales of Vesperia (With friends, solo with the remaster)
Tales of Graces f (With friends)
Tales of Hearts r (Solo, only option)
Tales of Zestria (Solo)
Tales of Berseria (Solo)
2D Tier:
Eternia (3DPD, Eternal Hammer)
High tier:
Hearts R (best tales combat mechanics, crappy translation, but are you playing Tales for plot?)
Abyss (Lots of backtracking but otherwise very good)
Decent but flawed:
Vesperia (really want to put this higher, but the battle AI is just so, so bad. Just find any flying enemy and you can leave the game for 30 minutes and come back to them still running in a circle ineffectively. Top tier with friends, but this is 8chan.)
Bersaria (Makes Zestria's mechanics better, as much as it can, and it works for the most part. Probably the best Tales game plot-wise, though that's not saying much. Main character is OP, but can just not play as her and game gets much better. /ss/ bait everywhere.)
Graces F (Good mechanically but takes some getting used to, insufferable characters and very questionable character design.)
Xillia (A game devoted to telling you what a great guy the villain is and how all your characters wish they could be cool like him. Too many hobbit holes. Mechanically okay, aside from character linking disabling multiplayer as an option)
Low Tier:
Symphonia (Very Dated mechanics, Many insufferable dungeons, insufferable characters, only good for the hot coffee scene.)
Zestria (Give a statue with the limited edition, then put that character on a bridge forever 20% into the game. Replace with mary sue assassin. Mechanics are garbage, gear RNG fest, Armatization is probably the most broken tales mechanic there's ever been. A party member dies 60% of the way through and it's probably the hardest I've ever laughed at a character death, so that's something I guess.)

I have no idea. I remembered loving Vesperia when my Tales group was still together , and I'm sure it's great still if you have at least one other player, but going back to it with the remaster…
Playing a healer character is impossible, as all enemies will home into the controlled character making spellcasting impossible. You'd think the AI would take advantage of not being focused to attack the enemy, but no, they just stand there ineffectively or poke once and run away. There are great mechanics that you'd love to take advantage of if you didn't have 4 enemies raping your asshole at any moment because your allies refuse to engage anything.

Symphonia's characters are good whether you agree with them or not. Grace's characters are a prime example of insufferable, not Symphonia's. The dungeons are objectively the best of the 3d games, even if they're mediocre to shit in comparison to other games dungeons.

So you say, but the four people I played through Symphonia with (and the same ones I played through most of those other games listed as with friends up there) unanimously decided that it was the worst tales game that we have played. The dungeon gimmicks being horrible was one of the primary reasons for this, particularly that damn Elven forest. We only made it to the end with copious amounts of liquor. Maybe the solo experience is better? Possibly. This was just my experience with it though, playing symphonia after many of the more modern ones.
Character wise, it's painfully generic. Zelos and Genis in the insufferable camp and Regal is in the "Why are you even here?" camp. The other characters are just… meh. At least Graces had Captain Malik and Pascal to make things amusing.

The phrase is "on a bus". "On a bridge" doesn't make any goddamn sense.
Zesteria's equipment system was fun to play with. Combat was pretty simplistic most of the time, mainly because what you could do was decided out of combat by the equipment. Berseria is kind of the opposite, but the OP therion mode kind of ruins it. Maybe you could stomach playing the other characters but when I tried it was just too damn slow and everything seemed built around that one OP mechanic.

I haven't played Vesperia yet, but what it sounds like is that they didn't want to worry about NPCs dying all the time and frustrating the player with shit AI, so they made enemies focus the player instead. Then they didn't want it to be exploitable by simply kiting the enemies around and letting NPCs do all the fighting while not being targetted, so they limited NPC damage effectiveness. The end result is what may as well be a single character battle instead of a party fight.

I thought it was annoying, and encouraged you to just horde everything and then sort though huge lists of gear trying to arrange elements on the grid rather than progressing gear stats - making them largely useless. Largely, and not totally, because the game even flat out tells you that you can ignore element tetris altogether and just equip new gear as it comes and do just as well.
Thanks guys, nice to know this maddening system that's grating up years of conditioning on the gear treadmill isn't even fucking necessary and could have been stripped out of the game to no consequence.

It makes plenty of sense because the character literally leaves the party to fix a bridge. "Oh boo hoo our fighting caused essential bridge to be destroyed I must stay and fix it for the common people. See you in the final act as a cameo."
Therion is OP but Armatization is 10x worse. You can remove velvet from party, but you can't even make Zestria parties without Armatization targets.

It's COMPLETELY necessary for doing the bonus dungeons. For example, stacking 11 of the same skill reduces cast times by 40%, and you can do this twice with different skills to get 80% cast time reduction. With that, you can then spam your slowest, most powerful "spells" for massive damage. That's just one example of what the skill combos do, and there's multiple valid builds revolving around different strategies.
As for collecting skills, that's mostly a post-game/ng+ thing. There's a NG+ bonus that lets double/triple skills count for stacks, and there's a method of increasing the double/triple skill drop rate. There are also advanced methods of combining equipment together to get exactly the skills you want.

It may as well have been the reason she left.
There was never any reason for Rose to have resonance, aside from being the producer's waifu. They just scribbled in a plot reason after the fact. The fact they did this and left zestria with a paltry 6 character cast is pretty mystifying, especially considering said character had moves and animations and everything all done. DLC walling her was just the final insult.

I liked Zestiria throwing the "Ah, you're the person we've been waiting for" angle, since most Tales games are you as a roving party that is basically unknown or hunted, rather than revered. Symphonia doesn't count since you don't get the special treatment outside of areas controlled by the church for Zelos and Collette getting preferential treatment, while Lloyd is treated like a pain and shoved to the side by everyone else except his friends. Didn't play Berseria though.
Xillia 2 is disappointing for people since it reuses assets for nearly everything, but I really liked the exploration of the first game's characters, even though it's kind of shitty that you don't get everyone all the time. It's really neat though since it's about alternate dimensions, you see a lot of "what-ifs" and it's really soul crushing at times to see that your world is actually one of the worst ones, but you fight to save it anyhow because it's the one you're from. The ending is meh, but the meat and potatoes was fun. Having three weapon types at all times was also pretty cool but somewhat unpolished. Still, a solid game.
>>16807375
>I got tired of Luke's shit about the same time the rest of the party abandoned his sorry ass.
I'd recommend picking it back up as that's the major turning point (as I'm sure you could guess) and the most I'll say is "He gets better." I don't think Abyss is the greatest by any means, but I enjoyed it a lot. And that includes liking the stupid naming scheme of Phonons and THE SCOOOOOOOOOOOORE. But overall, I like the character designs, I think the story is acceptable, the set designs are nice and Tear is the best military waifu. Also helps that Abyss is the more polished version of Symphonia for combat, so it feels pretty good.
>>16807819
Yep, every Tales game is standalone unless it shares a name. Symphonia (and 2) are actually prequels to Phantasia, though, but you don't need to play those to play Phantasia. If you hate 3D movement and love character development, play Legendia. Just be prepared to hear "Chasing Shirley" every two seconds. If you want a more polished combat system from Symphonia, play Abyss and Vesparia. If you want an evolved combat system that does away with needing TP items, Graces F (though I hate the character designs, honestly). Hate playing with 4 people? Play Xillia and Xillia 2. Hate play Tales games? Play Zestiria and Berseria. I haven't tried any of the older ones like Destiny so I can't comment on those, but I imagine they're similar to Phantasia, which can be too grindy, imo.

I'm not contesting that one, Legendia doesn't feel great unless you only play as Senel and like boring combat that feels like a mediocre fighting game.

Yeah, you probably were a few dungeons out. If you weren't that invested by that time, you're not missing much by not completing it, honestly. I liked the characters (despite some of the cliches and poor writing) so I played through to the end.

>I blame Adrenaline
It is adrenaline. Apparently the new 2020 version has fucked some people's graphics cards, I found them bitching about it yesterday on the AMD forums.
I've removed and reinstalled the drivers and it seems to be ok for now. At least until they update and fuck them up again.
