Looking to get into runescape to have some fun and maybe make some money, do you have any tips for newcomers? Do I need a membership before I get started or can I get that later on? What are the best ways to make money in this game?

Play OSRS, get good at PKing, and sell the gp you earn for some irl dosh.
not the highest profit but it's enough to fund my drug habit.

starting levels are fun but trying to grind them from 90 onwards will make you want to kill yourself, don't play with the idea of getting all 99s as an end goal if you start. Try mining and selling the ore at the start for small amounts of cash, later on if you can stomach it do runecrafting for gp, if not try buying dragonhide and tan with with the tan hide spell then sell them back to the grand exchange.

If you see a completely purple dude wandering around he usually gives away free shit.

It's not worth a staying free for long. If you want, you can get all your skills to like lvl 40 (except runecrafting) then go member.
The best money maker in f2p is like 250k gp/hr, in members you can unlock many many methods to make 2+ million an hour. Same with skill training, the best free method will be like 40k ex/hr while members can access 150k/hr methods. You're going to progress 100x faster as a member, allowing you to access the good money makers sooner and overall saving so much time.
As a new player, I would suggest your first goal being to complete recipe for disaster quest, then unlocking a money maker of your choice (completing SotE,MM2 or DS2 for example)

In terms of XP needed, going up 7 levels requires roughly all the XP you've earned up to that point.

PK is hard and risky and not fun

One other thing, is it possible to bot and just make money that way, because I could see having multiple bot accounts farming as probably being the best way to make money in this game, but it can't be that easy, anyone know about that?

From gp to dollars? Probably like 50 cents per million gp. To bot you need to develop a script, virtual machines and a host of other infrastructure, along with extensive knowledge of Jagex's detection methods and if the game itself. I'm an IT professional that works with hypervisor infrastructure and scripting, and it would probably take me 3-4 months of work and trial and error to begin making gold.

just to put this into perspective. Level 92 in a skill is HALF the XP from 1 to 99. that means to go from 92 to 99 you need roughly the same amount of XP it took you to go from 1 to 92.
runescape gold devaluates incredibly fast, it used to be a clean dollar per mill, now its around 60 cents per mill or less, and im talking strictly OSRS gold, RS3 is like dirt cheap because the server has been running for so long that the supply of gold in the whole economy is probably in the trillions already. people are flipping billion GP phats like they're iron bars.
