Have you been enjoying any exciting arcade-style action games lately? I have been enjoying Xeno Crisis for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, a thrilling top-down shooter where you murder aliens. It's kinda like Smash TV crossed with Alien Syndrome plus Metal Slug and the slide move from Nex Machina. I can't beat it yet.
Why don't you share your favorites?

Isn't it for PC/Switch/Whatever? Or is it like Gunlord where they also fit the game on a cartridge and it's playable on a megadrive? If so that would be pretty neat.
I've been going through Assault Android Cactus again since they added a difficult campaign+ mode for it and it's still as excellent as when I first started playing it. It's a twin stick shooter where you play cute big headed there's an option to make them normal headed androids fighting against a rogue AI. There's seven playable androids, each with their own weapon and subweapon(ergo playstyles), it's fast, it's fun, it's got music by Jeff Van Dyck(the composer of the older TW games ) and it's got shitton of replayability, especially with the new campaign+ mode.

This reminds me, why do plenty of modern games feel like they have to go through a period of at least 30 minutes of utter boring bullshit and story setup before actually letting you play the game unshackled?

Because that's what Half-Life did, and people will not let a 20+ year old meme die.

By the way, how's Nex Machina? It looks interesting but the last Housemarque game I played was Outland and it was painfully mediocre.

I still like me some SUPERHOT. I'm not sure where SMCD saves replays but it's what the game should have been initially, there's a fricassee no time stop mode. This is an old ass video from the basic game.

It was developed for Neo Geo/Dreamcast/Mega Drive I think, and the PC/etc version is presumably a 1:1 port of the DC version. I have mostly been playing it on a MD flashcart, it's technically inferior ofc but cool for novelty and quite faithful to the full version. If it came out back in the day, it would for sure be considered one of the best games on the console. The GoG version would be the one to pirate, if you're too cool for >paying for games.

I'm obsessed with Nex Machina, but I haven't played any other HM games. The thing is normal mode is kinda too easy and hard mode is retarded hard, I think they failed to make the game inviting to beginners the way e.g. Cuphead is. If I ever manage to unlock the Even Harderer difficulty I'm sure I'll never finish it.

That reminds me that many of the dev team that still do games for older consoles are for some reason super autistic about not wanting to give you an option to just buy the ROM, so you have to buy the super collector physical edition with an hyper limited run and spend 90 bucks and hope you have a way to rip it yourself.
And then they they complain about people just pirating the ROM and giving them the middle finger.

What I'd like to know is what is the point of all these "retro releases" when it seems like all the developers don't even stuck around to actually make a market for these systems, before throwing everything out and making these games about as valuable as bootlegs. Why should I go out and a find a physical copy of Peir Solar or Sturmwind or Gunlord when none of the games seem any more valuable than Vast Fame's bootleg GBC games; which, SOMEHOW, seem to have more effort put into them: http://archive.ph/lRH9H

Well I can appreciate a dev that actually confine himself to the limits of an older system to create something., and some do seem to make somewhat decent games.
But then half that scene is complete fuckwits, scammers or both, or worse.
NG:DEV.TEAM in particular seems to be a complete shitshow, especially with >>16807412 being a thing.

I think they always do normally-priced download releases for consoles eventually, I can't even get mad at them for hustling the retarded Neo Geo collector market. They could charge one freshly-amputated toe per copy and still sell out.

…just wow. I can't believe it's 2020 and structural inequality is still denying PoC equal access to ROMs… how is this still a thing?

Well I just tried this and there's a whole lot of cancer to wade through: cancerous character designs, cancerous tutorials, cancerous cut scenes before you get to do anything. Because I believe in you when you say there's an actual hard mode and there does seem to be potential, I will not give up on it, but right now I feel like I'm just mashing buttons and waiting for the actual game to start.
Nex Machina is like the Dark Souls of Android Cactus Assault. I just got to the True Secret Hidden Final Boss and soyed out and got the chills and everything. And then I got my shit pushed in, but it unlocked Master difficulty, which after five minutes of play I can confirm for being harder than any game I will ever finish, and I know it even has a second loop so fuck me. I will keep at it anyhow because I am an addict.

AAC is kinda slow to start and honestly not that hard in the regular campaign as long as you grasp a couple simple gameplay concepts, you could have skipped all the stuff at the beginning granted you actually want the tutorial or you won't realize you have I-frames on the swap.
First zone is really the slow start with 1-4 being a small spike in latter parts, first boss isn't too hard to deal with but there's a few tricks you'll pick up on easily if you've ever played shmups or such at any decent level.
Second zone isn't really any hard either although it ramps up, the second boss though is a bit more of a thing.
Third and fourth zone is where you start seeing the game becoming a lot less friendly, boss three being the one people have a lot of trouble with when they first play.
Zone five is the start of what the game actually is about when it gets serious, with 5-4 being the hardest part of the regular campaign and relying on a few hidden mechanics you'll have to wrap your head around if you don't want to get crushed.
Campaign + is kind of a mixed bag to me, it's pretty much slightly higher than Zone 5 difficulty throughout but it's not a difficulty curve but rather a gentle downward slope, the hard parts are early the rest of the latter levels are balanced less around raw difficulty and more around trying to put you in interesting situations.
The real hard thing is the Infinity Drive, it's basically 45-55 minute of non-stop action, as in actually no downtime / safespot / breathing room etc, and the difficulty ramps up really hard compared to the campaign., but it's more of a race against the clock thing because what ramps up isn't just what gets thrown at you but battery drain and battery spawn requirements (aka you have to kill more stuff in a lesser amount of time)
>Nex Machina is like the Dark Souls of Android Cactus Assault.
A shame I'll probably never get to play Nex Machina because they've decided proper mouse controls isn't a thing they should care about and fuck learning how to play twinstick shooters with a controller after thousand of hour using a M/KB.
