The Sonic, Microsoft, and Star Wars thread made me really depressed about how those series have an "overarching story" that's nothing but complete autism in execution, but there's something enjoyable about it. However, all these series, for just about the past decade, dropped that aspect and are now just limping along and trying to "recreate" something that wasn't broken in the first place.
Are there any other games that have this sense of overarching story autism to them?
Bionicle is sort-of relevant because the GBA game from 2001, as well as the browser game, are canon to the series; with everything else either being abridged versions of story arcs or completely non-canon.

There really is no "story" to the Mario games, with even the RPG games poking fun at that. However, with Sonic, there was some autism to the story up to Sonic '06 (Though, you are correct that some lorefags do imply that there's more there than there really is).

It could just be that Miyamoto is a bad story teller, all he's ever really done was make art and design game software. Managing projects is a step up from Inajew.

They reworked all the koopaling designs for that game, and they have been different ever since.
Most werent too different, Iggy was the only one who got a huge amount of changes.
Colors changed a bit for all them, Larry got a star shape on the back/side of his head, Lemmy got a ponytail and had his hairstyle changed a bit, ect.

I remember Miyamoto saying he thinks of the characters like actors in a play, which is why they can go from being sworn enemies in one game to playing tennis in another. I sort of like this philosophy, because it allows for a lot of flexibility in gameplay but it also means that there's probably no real mystery to solve in the first place. If you want to make up some kind of "play theory", then perhaps the mother isn't an "actor", so she doesn't appear in the "plays", hell if I know.

I had made like three different huge posts about the Inazuma Eleven series and just how batshit insane it was but I've lost them to a hard drive crash and I really don't feel like typing it all back
So let me just summarize it with: you start by really wanting to play soccer/football, by the end of the mainline storyline you've defeated Satan's underlings and thwarted TWO time traveling organizations (one of them is the good guys, too).
