I'm not quite sure what to call them.
Basically, I like games where you can play through them multiple times with multiple characters, and go through the same environments at the same or slightly different times and get different points of view on the same events, with some causality bleeding through the different character routes.
What's got me in the mood for more of this is the RE2 remake, and seeing the Leon and Claire A/B runs, as well as the Ghost Survivors (specifically Hunk and the other UC goon) and seeing where the stories overlap and how they play into each other.
Another game that did this was Octopath Traveller. Each character had their own story that stood alone, but then the end-game was tying all those separate arcs into one meta-narrative that had been hinted at all throughout (thief steals the gem, which is needed for the ritual discovered by the scholar, which takes place in the ruins that is explored in the huntress arc, etc). At least I think that's how it went, it's been a couple of years since I played through it.
I know there were a couple of RPGs on SNES that did this, but I can't think of them.
Anyone know of any other games that do the "anthology/ensemble" thing?

The first Half Life did this, unfortunately you need to buy the expansions for the alternate perspectives. Devil May Cry 4 counts but I'm pretty sure that had to do with the limited budget more than anything else.

Live A Live and Romancing Saga were on Super Famicom and involve switching between player characters and/or time periods. Live A Live and the first Romancing Saga have fan translations. RS II and III only have English translations with the mobile/console ports which questionably try going for an HD look. There's also SaGa Frontier on PS1, which managed to be released outside of Japan.
I haven't actually played any of these because I'm a fake gamer faggot.

The Way of the Samurai series is like this but with one character. Every playthrough you chose different paths (and subpaths in some games/routes) and the stuff the other routes would have you do is done by generic members of the faction (unless you're tasked with the opposite of what you do in other playthroughs, then its attempted by generic members of the other faction)

You only go through it once, but Suikoden 3 has three main characters that you play as that cross paths now and again before coming together and picking a single hero to beat the game with. The start of Wild Arms 3 also has it where the four main characters meet each other by one guarding an item, two of them individually trying to steal it, and the last one just being there; only the start, though.

Odin Sphere and Muramasa both have multiple stories told with different focal characters that may or may not meet in their own routes. Odin Sphere in particular is a game where you only get a full scope of what is going on after playing through each character's story. Muramasa has four characters as (very much worthwhile, assuming you don't have a CFWed system to yarrharr with) DLC in Rebirth compared to the Wii just having Momohime and Kisuke, while Odin Sphere has all characters in game but have to be unlocked in order as opposed to full freedom like Muramasa.

>The start of Wild Arms 3 also has it where the four main characters meet each other by one guarding an item, two of them individually trying to steal it, and the last one just being there; only the start, though.
Wild Arms 1, 2, 3, and ACF are all like that, having each of the three (four in WA3) initial characters getting a playable individual prologue that serves to introduce both the character's background and how they handle in combat.

Co-developed by Grezzo, Cattle Call, and FuRyu (who also published natively), yes. Though to my knowledge Alliance Alive also brought on the writer from Suikoden I and II (while dropping the SaGa artist), but I could be remembering wrong. Also might be worth considering that the 3DS version was handled here by Atlus, while the Switch/PS4 "remaster" got poached by NISA.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why Atlus has made it so difficult to find the SaGa-style character art for Legend of Legacy, even on their own promotional site. Last I checked, either it was broken, or they outright hid the way to access it to anyone not rooting through the html (where there are buttons to view them that aren't visibly displayed). Might as well dump the main character set here, since they seem kind of hard to find in general.
>>16806839
>FUCK
I'm going to assume NISA was lazy and just bought the English script from Atlus, if there isn't any actually new content (which I'm admittedly not sure of). I'm also going to assume that even if that's the case and they haven't fucked the translation, NISA is still lazy and will have likely bugged it up somehow. Do not give NISA money. 3DS is yarrharrable, and for those that don't want to go that route, if there's one good thing about the advent of the PS4/Switch version, it's made the demand and prices for the 3DS original drop, even for unopened launch copies.
But I do wonder what's been going on, whether Atlus had some contract with FuRyu that ran out, or they declined to handle the game again, or NISA undercut them. Not the first time a game that was previously handled by Atlus here went to them (Caligula Effect comes to mind), and not just for PAL publishing (which Atlus has dropped post-Odin Sphere Leifthrasir).

The two main things that change are the enchantment of the enemies (the enemy type is always the same, but how they look, what they're weak against and some of their stats are different) and some cutscenes. It's practically a difficulty select.

I meant more what specifically hiked it to such an absurd degree. I recall when it was only about $40, but I want to say that was back in probably early 2013 or so, before Soulsfaggotry was anywhere near the level it's been after Bamco pumped out two more sequels. Granted, it's not like it's bumped prices all across the board for FromSoft games releases prior to Dark Souls (the Otogi games for example have escaped that, and despite 2 selling abysmally here it's only about $15-20 complete), but that one is by far the most expensive now and has just been getting worse. One of the most expensive PS2 games as well. Previous time I saw a copy here it was $140, and that was a year or so back. I can get that maybe it didn't sell very well here, but it feels like there has to be something more than that to it, and more than just jewtube eceleb shills.
Glad I've got a modded PS2 and CFWed fat PS3 either way.

Ironically, the worst Command and Conquer game did this. No matter which campaign you played, you got basically the same story, from a "different" perspective. That was merely one of it's many failings, in my opinion. I kept thinking of games to name but then realized they never really fit the theme. Earthbound gets this as a part of the linear story, but doesn't encourage multiple playthroughs. Same with Live A Live. If I wanted a shitty throwaway, any full-scale RPG like FalloutScrolls could fit this.

Yeah, the series was sort of known for being a mechanical cross between old FF sort of combat, with Legend of Zelda style dungeon items for exploration, that you could keep with you once acquired (and allowing for both progression and backtracking for things you couldn't get before), and each party member getting three they hold onto. 1, 2, 3, and ACF all kept that up. 4 meanwhile had various equipment you could find in dungeons, but you couldn't leave with them, and 5 went with different sorts of permanently acquired ammo types that Dean can shoot at things in dungeons for interaction, but the puzzle solving still wasn't up to the older ones (much better Wild Arms game all around than 4 though).
I hear Lufia II handles exploration in a similar fashion, but I've yet to play those games myself.

I don't agree with that
The game still has 3 unique storylines where the 3 main characters also get 2 side characters to play as, so the game has 9 playable character. The main levels are all fast paced action stages, the hub world from Adventure 1 is back but with tons of side missions to do. The 3 main hedgehogs can all buy a bunch of gamepla upgrades over the course of the story.
Aside from Sonic and Elise's weird romance. The rest of the game is a very solid foundation, if your already an autistic Fan of the adventure era, the development was just royally fucked in a multitude of ways.
This isn't Secret Ring where your forced to control everything with fucking Wiimote tilting.

I'm in a similar boat. I want to play Lufia II, just never got into it. I started Dragon Quest VIII and my dumb ass forgot that using an escape item that makes you fly can't be used inside of a dungeon, so I haven't picked it back up since then. Maybe I'll start Lufia II after I finish my playthrough of Chrono Cross.
I wish more RPGs had interesting puzzles in the environment, like Golden Sun/Wild Arms. I'd probably play more if that was true.

>I wish more RPGs had interesting puzzles in the environment, like Golden Sun/Wild Arms.
Tales of Symphonia tends to make use of the Sorcerer's Ring for dungeons, wherein absorbing some particular energy from the surroundings gives it particular abilities toward overcoming the puzzles there-in, but as each ability is locked to the dungeon rather than permanently acquired (like Abyss or Vesperia, which put much less emphasis on it regardless), it's still not the same. aid puzzles aren't especially tough either. Baten Kaitos has some a similar variant as well, wherein you can use blank magnus card to trap the essence of something and release it later, which can be used for progression or to cart around items NPCs want for sidequests, but the essences aren't meant to be permanent upgrades that have utility anywhere, and either need to be released to free up space (you only have so many blank magnus), or can "rot" into other items that may or may not be remotely useful at a given time. Nor are such cards meant to be usable in combat, as they are not part of the combat decks.
I suppose in a way it's also a question of how a developer wants to implement such, if they even consider going somewhere other than just "push blocks" or "bring X item to Y location", which is likely far easier, but leaves the party to feel more like they're together for safety in combat as opposed to teamwork when not.

In this case I'm reasonably certain it was the art style they were going for. That stealth game series they did I can't remember the name of has the same sorta faces, ugly but accentuates the important parts (face, colors, if they're strong or weak, etc.) They did a decent job with the enemies too. Whether they did a good job with the art style is another discussion, as you barely see most of the characters throughout the game.

For Sonic autists like me I was 11 years old when Sonic 06 came out, we enjoyed the hell out of it, it helped that playing Sonic Adventure 1 DX already gave me the experience I needed to avoid glitches. Sonic 06 was, and is Glitchy. but I ,and I assume anyone who actually has fond memories of 06 are the kind of people who were easily able to simply learn how to avoid those glitches, (Don't his X speed booster for X loop from X angel next time to avoid death) When your that young your standards for a games polish aren't as important as if the game's characters are cool to you or not.
Not super relevant but a similar thing happened to me with DMC4, It didn't occur to me that the game was so unfinished that I had to redo most of it backward, since Dante was cool to watch and play as, and that's all that's important.
Sonic 06 has allot about it to like if your already a fan of the Adventure era, the problem's arise when you get older and you realize just how fucking long the loading actually is and just how often it does have to load. at the very least, as a kid I must have had ungodly amounts of patients so long as the game was Sonic. 06 is really flawed, but I also beat Secret Rings And I have no fucking Idea how I put myself though that games fucking controls.
The same could be copy pasted to any game that is seen as objectively flawed, Kids don't give a fuck about those flaws if their having fun with the Characters.
