Konami ripped off God of War to make Lords of Shadow, hopefully next time they rip off Dark Souls to make the next CV, but with heavy emphasis on sub-weapons (cross, holy water, axe, etc.) and player agility.
I feel like 2D CV has been done to death.

Acktually the most recent Gunvolt was really good, but it's shackled by it being a gunvolt game(ie it's designed with prevasion in mind, levels are fairly short and segmented, the music is utter trash and any replaybility comes from s-ranking levels which is the opposite of fun for the GV games in my opinion).
Where's the big mclargehuge levels if you're sticking with the 8 boss format? Where's the shittons of levels if you're not? Where's the level order influencing other levels, or the hidden armor upgrades or bosses? Where's the part system from X5/X6 or form system from Zero? Where's the difficulty select that gives bosses more and harder attack patterns, or the level/rank system from X5-6/Zero?
GV iX was really fun but it also felt really phoned in. Just having 8 short levels plus a boss rush plus a two phase final boss is too short nowadays especially when the levels and bossfights seem to end just as they're getting good.

So how was Lords of Shadow 2, by the way? I'm so-so on Lords of Shadow, I liked how it seemed like a more difficult God of War but I hated the overly cinematic parts of it like climbing the larger bosses and the plot seemed to get amnesia in the final few cutscenes since Gabe goes through 2 completely opposite arcs in two cutscenes that play one after the other.
And Mirror of Fate is outright the worst metroidvania I've ever played, no hyperbole.

I mean i can deal with bad framerate and models fucking up but when the game crashes just after a boss fight right before I was a bout to save, I get mad. I was so mad about It I made the bloodstained thread in the bunker. I ended up sticking with the game though and it did crash a lot less as the game went on.
I was reminded of the 7th/6th gen when people would argue consoles were better because you could just put a game in and not worry about crashes. Even back then it wasn't really true but honestly having the game crash this much is just unforgivable. I really should have just gotten the pc version, it was way cheaper, only then id have no physical copy.

It looks (or looked, there was recently a patch made to address this, but I haven't personally seen how much difference there is) much worse than the other versions, has/had performance problems including input lag, suffers/ed occasional graphical glitches, and could crash on occasion. They may not be distinct genera but they're definitely distinct design choices that have a bearing on how each style is played. Simon's Quest is a good example. In most ways it's a Classicvania style game but it has a proto Metroidvania stage layout and inventory and that makes it play very different than all the other early CV games.

Legacy of Darkness has the new playable character that is a prologue to the Richter/Carrie stories in 64, as well as a side mission where you play as Henry (the young boy Richter saves in 64) when he returns to the castle as an adult to rescue children that have been kidnapped by Dracula's minions. It also has just about all the content from C64 vanilla too.

Castlevania has always ripped off other games for "inspiration". The original game was basically "Universal and Hammer Horror Film Mashup: The Game", SOTN was basically Super Metroid, Lords of Shadow was basically God of War, it makes sense that if a new CV was to be made it would rip off the current popular style.

The most frustrating about Fromsoft is that they are just a hairsbreadth away from recreating the classic NES Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden experience for the modern age but they just fail to bring all the elements together just right. Sekiro in particular was as damn close to Ninja Gaiden as any game has ever come in the new millennium. But then they missed the mark by making the enemies damage spongy and by clinging to that damn ARPG leveling system.

>>16806501
The Ninja Gaiden experience is getting your shit fucked by birds that hurt three times more than getting shot and getting booted back several levels if you die to any of the three final bosses.
The Ninja Gaiden II experience is missing a bat and getting knocked into a pit because your sword's hitbox is, like, one pixel tall.
The Ninja Gaiden III experience is running out of time because you get one timer for the entire act and losing your last continue in the final level because the localization team hates me. The cutscenes don't even look cool, either.
I actually like Ninja Gaiden more than Castlevania but there's some bullshit.

completely off topic but i miss ninja gaiden, I am a filthy gen z and I remember xbox gaiden and loving it. it was gory, fun, fast and it didn't even need pre-animated takedowns or QTE's or any of that bullshit.
I do wonder if they ever try to bring back Ninja gaiden will it be classic gaiden? xbox gaiden? a completely new Gaiden? What ever it is i just hope its better than 3.

I halfway expect that it'll be classic Gaiden if they ever bring it back. Mostly because one of Ryu's ancestors shows up as an optional boss in Nioh and his outfit is based upon the NES games rather than the XBox games.

Maybe they'll go really old school and make it like the arcade beat em up,

The first is just okay. The combat is better than GoW but still not all that complex. Climbing is just as tedious and boring as Uncharted. It likes to surprise you with QTEs, you cannot trust any cutscene. The story isn't bad, except for the ending of the game pre-dlc, but it's not great. It occasionally interrupts the action with silly puzzles that you can just skip for a bit of experience. The "titans" are not the Shadow of the Colossus fights the advertising would have you believe, and there's not a lot of them. The environments can be really pretty, though. My favorite things about the game are just how cool the combat cross is and the fact that every major upgrade is actually represented on Gabriel, which I think says a lot about the actual quality of the game. I'd say it's worth a playthrough if you'd like a GoW game that expects a bit more competency, or if you're just really looking for another classic horror themed game to play.

It's my favourite of the DS trilogy, but I like mage girls with thigh highs so your fetish may vary. I remember it being harder than the other two as well. It's less non-linear with each part of the map being a more linear, self-contained level, so it's a nice mix of classic and Igavania.

The others have said most of it already, but I wanted to add that it also has the most varied environments. The only downside is that the levels are fairly short and mostly linear. The second half of the game takes place in the castle which has some of the Metroidvania style, but it's much smaller than in the other games.
That might be plus for you though. OoE is like a mix between Classicvania and Metroidvania, the perfect note to end the series on. Castlevania might be dead, but at least it ended on a really good note with this game.

>Isaac is black now because muh slavery
>Hector is a fucking sissy, literally
>All antagonism and threat Drac build in the first season is nowhere to be seen
>Drac is now, in fact, a fucking suicidal faggot who does nothing but complain
>Antagonism was changed to Carmilla, that is nothing like the games and more of a "strong independent vampire who needs no vampire man"
>Fight against Dracula took one episode and they throw in just one track of the game for nostalgia
>The "fight" against Dracula basically ended in Dracula killing himself because "I can't kill my son!"
>Season ends in cliff hanger with Dracula simply defeated and carmilla fucking Hector in the ass while Isaac nignogs people
Also, it was produced by the same pajeet that made that edgy Power Rangers reboot on youtube, pic related, so go figure. Hope there's no season 3, I swear to god.

Don't get me wrong. I said they are both overrated, but they are nothing alike. CotM is a failed mesh between classicvania and metroidvania, and it fails at both, people like to jerk it off because it's "hard", but it's only hard because of shitty mechanics. In the case of OoE, it's also kinda hard in comparison to the previous titles, but not that much, it can be broken easily and it's fairly fluid compared to CotM, specially since you can actually change your direction mid air as any fucking game of this kind should.
Tier list, including the 3D metroidvanias
Aria of Sorrow > Portrait of Ruin > Order of Ecclesia > SOTN > Curse of Darkness > Bloodstained > Dawn of Sorrow > Lament of Innocence > Harmony of Dissonance > Circle of the Moon
SOTN is great, but it had half-assed mechanics that were improved in the sequels. But there;s something about it most of the sequels couldn't match, maybe visuals seeing how most sequels are in handhelds, and even then, they do an amazing job.

Simon's Quest is actually a good game with some slight demerits for lack of boss fights and that one annoyingly obtuse puzzle (which was exacerbated by a bad translation.) As far as I know it's the only game that blends Classicvania and Metroidvania gameplay.
Vampire Killer is a semi nonlinear take on CV1. The game itself is linear but you proceed through the individual stages in a nonlinear manner. There's even a merchant that appears on each stage.
Dracula's Curse is linear but with branching paths so I guess it should be brought up here too. Trevor is the least powerful character.
I know mostly about the classic era games and most of my knowledge runs out once Iga gets involved.

I think they actually spent most of their time in a library, which was fucking lame. Isaac was a tranny, so I didn't care for him from the get-go. Dracula was just lame. Instead, we spent way too much time on Isaac and Hector, and the main trio got largely ignored until the end.

>multi-season show
They should have chosen a new Castlevania for each season, because there just isn't enough story in any one Castlevania for multiple seasons. Likewise, if heavy dialogue was desired, then Castlevania was not the series to choose. It would be like trying to make multiple seasons out of a God of War series. The source material just doesn't allow for it. A Persona series would have have made more sense, as those games are heavy on the dialogue.

Let's see.
You have Lament of Innocence, a story about a man saving his fiance, only to have to tragically sacrifice said fiance to kill the evil vampire who kidnapped her, finding out his best friend betrayed him and was behind it all.
You have Dracula's Curse, a story of a fearsome vampire hunter sent by the Church on a journey to take out the baddest vampire to exist, along the way saving and joining a witch, a pirate/thief, and the dhampir son of the big evil vampire.
You have Curse of Darkness, the story of a devil forgemaster chasing his old friend turned enemy through the ruins of his ex-mentor's castle, encountering a time traveler and a priest that's more than meets the eye.
You have Aria of Sorrow, the story of a young man and his female childhood friend mysteriously transported to an evil castle within an eclipse, where the young man makes for the throne room to get him and his friend back home, meeting several eccentric characters and eventually discovering the shocking secret of who he really is.
There are plenty of stories in Castlevania that could make a good, somewhat short action-oriented cartoon, while still sticking to the premise. They could work very well if written like a shonen show. Trying to make a drama out of the series is a very bad idea.

Genndy Tartakovsky is able to make a whole show with no dialogues full of action AND drama at the same time. So yeah, it is possible. It's how you handle it, how you depict the protagonist dealing with trials and dangers, and doing good managing the time and the action on it. Hell, even Samurai Jack is a very good example of it with episodes like the Scotsman and the Bridge.
>>16807643
I don't think it's a bad idea to expand their characters, their motivations, etc. But they pretty much just fucked Trevor over by making him a fucking jerk for little to no reason, and I mean, it worked in the first season because he was aimless, but with the resolve of killing Dracula, they should have changed that in second season.
>>16807660
It depends, the one with more potential was definitively CV3 because the cast of characters involved is relatively big, so you could spend a whole episode expanding a single character, like the first season kinda did. And yet, they got rid of a whole fucking character for no reason. I can see the original Castlevania being a single episode OVA with Simon because there's not a lot of mystery there, Simon goes in, fucks Dracula, and that's it, maybe expand it with the Curse in Simon's Quest, or some shit like that.
Iga games do have bigger stories, though, as >>16807670 says.

I didn't find the generic anime portraits as egregious as Dawn's due to there being more distance between Bloodlines and PoR than Aria and Dawn, but it's still neat. Makes me wonder if there's any bugfix patches for the US version (Death soft lock and the chance of the later portrait levels freezing when you use certain subweapons in some rooms) it might be compatible with, ala Dawn's "Definative Edition" compilation.

Then it looks like pure objective shit. This isn't live action where cinematography can be used cover up mediocre fight choreography, if you can't cough the time, money, and talent to animate something beyond a slideshow, then don't fucking animate it, rewrite the script so it doesn't call for too many fight scenes, or use simpler designs that are easier to animate on a cheap budget.

It really wasn't just the bishop, but a lot of things. You have the backstory of the Belmonts being ostracized by the Church for hunting monsters, the poor oppressed speakers or whatever they were called that the Church hated despite them doing nothing but helping people, a huge number of priests acting as thugs, etc. The first season went out of its way to paint the organized church as an awful organization, with only some of the priests at the bottom of the hierarchy being any good. Calling it a "portrayal of religion" is a bit inaccurate, but it's definitely an unflattering portrayal of the holy church, and organization that has been 99% a force of good in the games.

Neither of you seem to be making a compelling argument in either direction of DMC5 being great or shit.
>DMC1 is the most balanced and tightly constructed game in the series, Alastor, and Ifrit are perfect tools for everything the game throws at you, and they have zero overlap in their abilities. DMD mode feels like how the game is meant to be played since the biggest handicap against you is simply turning off DT healing. The biggest flaws of DMC1 seem to be the swimming, and space shooter sections, but only for people who are incapable of adapting to them since their not actually difficulty or poorly controlled at all.
>DMC2 is objectively the weakest game in the series, due to it's development being completely mismanaged, Having S ranked the game myself I know better then anyone the game was not tested or polished enough, some levels can feel nearly impossible to S rank even with Unlimited DT. Still DMC2 added the concepts of multiple playable characters, level select, the prototypes for what would later become Dante's styles , and Bloody palace, to the series, and it's the only game with actually unique campaigns for the playable characters.
>DMC3 was the start of the modern style, Where DMC1 was more like an Arcade game about learning and developing your own most efficient tactics against each enemy and boss. DMC3 doesn't care what you do so long as your not repetitive and don't get hit, it's combat more comparable to a fighting game in that regard. people praise DMC3 for it's combo potental, but the only Enemies anyone actually seems to like fighting are the ones you can just turn into an aerial punching bag. enemies like The fallen, Soul Eaters, and Dullahan. really aren't the game, and while Vergil is a fantasic boss, Arkham is at the same time the worst boss in the entire series. Anyone who's ever played DMD would agree.
>DMC4 it's common knowledge at the point that it's only half a game, the repeating levels and bosses is inexcusable, and that only gets worse with DMC4SE since it goes from repeating things with 2 characters to repeating things with 5 characters. As much as I like DMC4 Vergil he's completle over Powered and Broken, you can easily beat DMD bosses in 10 seconds with him. that's just objectively not balanced.
>DmC would be an objectively more enjoyable game if it had zero story. since while the game play is definitely Babies first Action game tier, it still lets you be creative, and it can be enjoyable in the vanilla version to exploit how easy it is to be OP with Demon Dodge and DT, the main thing making it feel shit is your being told this dick head your playing as is Dante, as well as the constant game interruptions the story forces on you. Beaucse of that crap, I'd rather play DMC2, despite it being objectively not as good.
>DMC5 doesn't have any really big lows aside from how often your in the Demon Tree, so that makes levels feel the same. but at the same time most cool things DMC5 does is banking off of things that were already cool in the previous games. also the game just treats Lady and Trish as side characters making them even being in the game feel pointless. There really isn't that much to complain about, I consider it solid but not too impressive, as much as i like itsuno i'd like to see some fresh blood at Capcom try to bring in some new ideas into the series. since we've reached the point were we can't keep doing Dante vs Vergil for a 4th time. Dante is cool but so are the other characters in this series.

I had a longer retort to what you said, but I refuse to keep going because this is a Castlevania thread. And I'm glad the franchise died on a good note and it didn't become that garbage, unless you count Bloodstained as part of it, which you might as well, and it's pretty good.

I have a question about learning the ropes to DMC combat. I want to get to grips in a smooth progression way. DmC sounds like the easiest to get into, sometimes for the wrong reasons, but DMC1 is currently whipping me. How would the games stack in terms of progressively more complex yet rewarding gameplay?

DMC1 is supposed to kick your ass, just keep trying, learn from you mistakes, and get better. It it really comes down to it you can save by hitting select, then load your game to the start of the current level to keep fighting enemies and grind Red orbs so you can get more Blue orbs, Purple orbs, and abilities. It saves your time and such as well so you won't get a good rank that way, but your not gonna get good ranks the first time regardless.
The games get progressively more complex so starting from DMC1 is how it's meant to be, DmC uses an entirely different gameplay style with no lock on, so I can't really recommend it if your actually trying to get better at main line DMC, anymore then I can recommend a God of War game for the same purpose.

>How would the games stack in terms of progressively more complex yet rewarding gameplay?
I didn't answer this part quite well
DMC1 to me feels almost perfect, but I basically see it as a standalone game, considering the series went in a different much more combo oriented direction afterward.
DMC2 actually does have some decently complex combat, If you actually bother to dig into it and learn, the problem is nothing in the game encourages you to actually do so. Stubborn people will just shoot their entire way to the end, and aside from a bad rank, there isn't much to stop you from doing so, besides some bosses taking long due to them taking less damage from bullets
DMC3, DMC4, and DMC5 are essentially all the same in how they want you to go about things, playing any of them will make you better at the others. But DMC3 tends to feel the most rewarding due to it being harder, and giving you no easy way out of things. Nero in DMC4 and 5 can tend to make bosses feel allot easier, due to having a move dedicated to playing a really cool animation and dealing a big chunk of Damage.
DMC5 Dante can also make the game feel like a joke if your already very experienced with the previous Dante's, but kind of in a good way since Dante and by extension a veteran player is supposed to be that good if they've stuck with the series this long.

The Positron Rifle is from the Boss Rush, so I'm not sure you can count it as having been left in the castle from the battle, or whatever. On that note, while I'm a bit grateful there aren't a huge abundance of them, it does seem a bit odd that there's so many zombie soldiers from the 1999 battle, yet only two guns to be found during normal play, with one of them being all the way in the underground cavern you need bat form to reach. Did whatever military sent troops in seriously think knives and grenades were all they'd need?

If there is a franchise that could change a genre to tell an story better, I bet that shit is the 1999 war. Personally, I think a musou would perfectly fit the events of what happened. My only problem would be what characters would be in and what kind of maps. You know that actual soldiers went in, and seeing how Arikado is actually from Japan's government, then you know governments of the world got involved, which is pretty neat, you also have the church and, obviously, Dracula's forces. Specific characters would obviously be Julious, Yoko and Arikado, and dunno about Dracula's forces outside of Dracula himself, maybe Death.
If not that, I guess you can kind of go for a "tactical" kind of game, that goes from turn based movement to an actual 2D fight or exploration to take objectives or something. I don't know.

The way I'd seen it was more likely that the soldiers were perhaps a distraction at best. As in, maybe Dracula himself knew about the Nostradamus prophecy, prompting a far more vicious defense than normal on the off chance it was correct. Sending a military in could cause a decent chunk of that to be diverted to the entrance hall, allowing a better chance for Julius, Alucard, and whoever else to sneak in where security was relatively lower. As far as gameplay, focus could then be on trying to keep casualties at the front to a minimum in terms of how long it takes from mission start to Dracula killed (with different endings based on it, and taking too long), and a plot focus on what could have caused Julius to lose his memory for all those years. Especially if he wiped it himself rather than being an effect of the sealing.
Still, it's kind of telling that, in terms of genre shift, or rather, medium shift, when Castlevania got a book, it was set after Dawn of Sorrow, so I guess even being freed from having to consider gameplay as an element, Konami didn't think 1999 could be done in that format either.

That's why it would work great as a Musou considering the amount of fodder you see in those games. I think it would be pretty cool to have the whole game centered on a siege against the castle, though, considering it's known as the Demon Castle War. Consider, the zombies you see the in the entrance can be just small reminiscent of all the people who could have fucking died there.
>focus could then be on trying to keep casualties at the front to a minimum in terms of how long it takes from mission start to Dracula killed (with different endings based on it, and taking too long)
This is the worst part of metroid games. Please don't.
I'd also be interested to know why the Belmonts left the whip to the Morris. Hell, there could be a subplot about Jonathan himself or his son trying to deliver the whip to Julius, forcing Julius to use different weapons until that point in the game. In fact, the whip itself can be the reason why he loses his memory.

Yeah, that is another aspect the games haven't really touched on too thoroughly, other than being something that simply "is". Did the whip have to sit in the sunlight for centuries (like the Sunstone in Chrono Trigger) to achieve a strength to truly finish Dracula? Did Richter getting possessed between Rondo and SotN taint the bloodline until Julius was born? Did some other Belmont between then commit some heinous crime with it that his descendants had to atone for over the generations? I suppose trying to tether Castlevania to the Bram Stoker novel a number of games past the series inception was going to prompt some issues for the overarching writing regardless. In retrospect, it makes makes me a bit surprised Bloodlines wasn't sent to discanon like Circle of the Moon to make things easier on that end.

This game is honestly one of the few times muted, dark and gritty was sold on me. It pulls it off so well. I also love the quirky as fuck magic system, which depends on drops that you probably wont find without being lucky or looking them up. It's something you wont see in modern games and kinda makes the magic system more mystical if that makes sense.

Kojima reminds me of John Romero. Romero killed off looking glass studios because his turd Diakatana was eating up all the publishers funding. In a similar fashion to how Kojima totally fucked up the Castlevania with his retarded input and then shat out his own flop a few years later. Both had good ideas, but without talented people to make them a reality, keep them in check or tweak them to be viable they are nothing.
Kinda reminds me of George Lucas to

I would say to run a checksum of the base game file you're using against ones provided with the patch (patches tend to be made for use with specific dumps), but it doesn't seem like the rhdn page lists any, and neither do the patch's readme, or an archive of the old hosting page for the patch effort. You might see if you can find another download of the game to be patched, and see if it gives a different hash than the one you've been trying to use.

Also, I would expect the Church to put at least some effort into taking out a threat at home whose very nature was considered an affront to God, crusades or no. "We're busy fighting non-christians" is not an excuse for doing nothing about the devil in your back yard.

I personally think they are, though they aren't the greatest games. LoI has decent combat but suffers from a poor camera and a lot of copy/pasted rooms and hallways. It doesn't take too long to beat, though, even including finding the optional super boss. CoD is pretty good, with my only complaints being the grind it takes to get some items and the combat being more shallow than LoI.
>>16818995
>giving him no assistance it's not the same as actually wanting to kill you
That wasn't what I was arguing. You particularly pointed out LoI as a time when the Church helped the Belmonts, when the game itself makes a big point of it not being a time when the Church helped them out.
>I'm sure that in this case the church does have specific people that takes care of these kind of threats
I feel if that were actually the case, Leon wouldn't feel the need to personally protect the people of his barony from Bernhardt.
>not barons that serves better in the front lines
The Church had already withdrawn both him and Matthias from the front lines. That's how Matthias even found out his wife was dead in the first place. Leon was basically just sitting in his house doing nothing while hearing about how the local vampire was killing his own people.

> feel if that were actually the case, Leon wouldn't feel the need to personally protect the people of his barony from Bernhardt
That's because, again, there was more going on at the time. The church would have deal with it any other time, and even if it wasn't the case, it was Leon's duty as a baron to go to the crusades, and if he wanted to help he had to quit his title.
>The Church had already withdrawn both him and Matthias from the front lines
I don't remember this one too well, but I'm pretty sure Leon actually came directly from the crusades BECAUSE of the vampire, which is why he had to quit his title in the first place.

Better than RNG drops, qhich the game already have anyway. So you already have 2 ways of obtaining materials, and one of them being more or less reliable, instead of just a random generated one, and that's an step further from SOTN. Not to mention, changing the pieces to evolve innocent devils by using specific kind of weapons add variety to the game and it's better than the experience familiars got in SOTN. And the crafting helps you to progress better than random drops and weapons around the castle, while still having to explore the castle for materials for said weapons.
Those are small individual things, but all together improve the formula of SOTN. I wish more of those elements were added to Bloodstained, and some actually did

I should add: I don't think it's a perfect way of dealing with it, I said the grinding is bad because despite of the progression, you have to grind way too much. I'm not arguing against your point. But when you made your point, you made a factually incorrect claim, which I was correcting.
>That's because, again, there was more going on at the time.
Again, that doesn't really matter. Protecting your home domain, especially from monsters that have mysteriously began appearing, comes before fighting some enemy elsewhere, by principle and logic. It's a lord's duty to protect his domain, and there's no point conquering other lands if the ones you have get destroyed from the inside. The Church should have been more concerned with protecting its own people, even if it meant diverting resources from the campaigns in the crusades. Protecting your own comes first, conquering others second.
>I don't remember this one too well, but I'm pretty sure Leon actually came directly from the crusades BECAUSE of the vampire, which is why he had to quit his title in the first place.
Upon further research, I admit I was wrong. Matthias returned to find his wife dead, but Leon kept leading their troops. But that then leads me to question how Matthias was able to "struggle out of his sickbed" to tell Leon the bad news about Sara, if Leon was off east fighting the crusades.

>Better than RNG drops, qhich the game already have anyway
But that's exactly what the death drops are.
>one of them being more or less reliable
And the real good materials having to be stolen from monsters with infuriatingly small windows to steal from, often during frames of animation that makes it ridiculously difficult to be in position to steal during that window.
>changing the pieces to evolve innocent devils by using specific kind of weapons add variety to the game
That is not at all reliant on the crafting system being there.
>crafting helps you to progress better than […] weapons around the castle
No way. Equipment placed around the castle means the designers can provide you appropriate gear for the point of the game you're at and make sure you don't have overpowered or underpowered equipment. Plus, they can reward you for exploring or completing difficult challenges by giving you more powerful gear for the area you're at. Relying on material drops and crafting means you can more easily get too powerful equipment too early or get unlucky and not get appropriate gear for where you're at in the game. The reason Metroid's progression is always much better than Castlevania's is because all the new equipment is always deliberately placed around the map and not reliant on enemy drops or crafting, that and the lack of a leveling system.
>while still having to explore the castle for materials for said weapons.
Finding materials is never as satisfying as finding the weapons themselves. I'd much rather complete a difficult platforming challenge to get a cool sword than complete several small challenges that each give you a bit of boring material until you have enough to make the cool sword.
>I wish more of those elements were added to Bloodstained, and some actually did

Kinda, yes, the church did not help Leon then, but the church didn't oppose to him either. They are not antagonists of any sort, and their relevancy in their story is not negative, is rather neutral, and it's understandable for the time.
>It's a lord's duty to protect his domain
Not even kings could deny the church's requests. Why would a baron? And if you wanted to object, you lose your lordship, or worse, you'd be deemed a fucking heretic and be killed. This isn't a matter of what the church should have done or not, if you are being objective from an historical point of view, the church shouldn't have gone to the middle east the way they did, that's beside the point, the point is that despite the clear strict orders from the church back then, they left Leon go to defend his homeland to the cost of his title.
>But that then leads me to question how Matthias was able to "struggle out of his sickbed" to tell Leon the bad news about Sara, if Leon was off east fighting the crusades.
Mathias was a motherfucker, and an smart one, he planned to fuck Leon all along. Also, despite being the middle ages, you can still send messages, anon.
>But that's exactly what the death drops are.
Yes, I mean, you have both the steal mechanic and the random drops, and that's one more mean to get materials than just RNG, and I think that's good enough.
>often during frames of animation that makes it ridiculously difficult to be in position to steal during that window.
I know, anon, to this day, I refuse to steal from death because it's fucking bullshit. I know, the stealing mechanic is not perfect, but it works well most of the time, specially if you have to parry or damage them in specific ways. I like the concept itself, though, it was also present in LoI, and I think it's one of the best thing of the game despite the execution being iffy.
>That is not at all reliant on the crafting system being there.
How is it not? You'll always have the right weapon you need, and since you can buy the base material for cheap, it isn't that bad either. There are also rooms to grind the pieces.
>Equipment placed around the castle means the designers can provide you appropriate gear for the point of the game you're at and make sure you don't have overpowered or underpowered equipment
That's why the crafting system works. You don't only get one option appropriated for your level, but you also have different equally viable options of different kind of weapons, that's why it works, it's variety, fag, and it's viable for a while, unlike SOTN. You get the exact same rewards for hard tasks but instead of giving you an specific weapon they give you a piece of material so you can choose what kind of weapon you want. You like maces? Good, make yourself one. You like fist weapons? Make yourself one, and it'd be as good as the counterpart, except you like this one better. Yes, it is not as perfect as I make it sound, but it does work well.
>Finding materials is never as satisfying as finding the weapons themselves
I don't see how it isn't. I was ok with it.
>The crafting was one of the worst things about Bloodstained, though.
That's because bloodstained depended entirely on random drops and those stupid blue chests. The crafting worked better in CoD because of the stealing mechanic that gave you extra material when you needed it, instead of grinding enemies to dead and hoping they dropped the material.

>How is it not?
Well, the game could start you off with basic weapons in each category. There's only four of them, after all. Even then, it's not like you start with innocent devils to be raising, and you don't have to have all the options available from the get-go. Just scatter the weapons around the map and rely on the player to be able to find them.
>it's variety, fag
You can provide variety without a crafting system. Look at DMC.
>I don't see how it isn't. I was ok with it.
Piecemeal rewards that only amount to something worthwhile if you have a bunch aren't as satisfying to get as something actually significant and functional. When you get the same thing often, its value as a reward diminishes. If you get more functional, unique rewards at a slower pace, each reward becomes more significant and memorable. To this day, I remember exactly where the Claimh Solais lies and how you get there. But I couldn't tell you were the chest of 5 iron ore hides. Honestly, Igavanias have a habit of having too many weapons, and could really do with having fewer weapons with more unique abilities and movesets.

>Just scatter the weapons around the map and rely on the player to be able to find them.
Or just do the same with materials to improve the basic weapons, which is what the game already do, in the first area you have the possibility of getting all the basic weapons,. and even then, later on you can buy them for cheap and all you need is the materials so you can improve them. ALSO, you still get special weapons from the castle that you can improve anyway.
>You can provide variety without a crafting system. Look at DMC.
DMC is completely different. DMC isn't about exploring and collecting stuff, and DMC limits itself to a couple of weapons because it is more about style than anything else, while castlevania, even SOTN, have a massive amount of different weapons that may or may not do different things. It isn't about what's the best weapon, but what is the coolest or which one you like the most, even if for cheesing the game or something you like to use. This is what this games do as good if not better than SOTN or even other metroidvanias, because collecting glyphs is shit in comparison, specially when you get underpowered ones later on in the game.
>Piecemeal rewards that only amount to something worthwhile if you have a bunch aren't as satisfying to get as something actually significant and functional
It's not like you needed more than 1 of a rare material by the end of the game, specially the kind of material you'd find after the Tower of Evermore, for example. In fact, this is rewarding because you don't get it often, like the Miracle Egg, while still being a material. It's not like you'll get a piece of iron for defeating a hidden boss, fag.
>Honestly, Igavanias have a habit of having too many weapons, and could really do with having fewer weapons with more unique abilities and movesets

Did anyone really suspect Konami to keep up their standards once all the famous and talented people left them? The only way their franchises can return to their former glory is if they sold them off to other companies once they went bankrupt from pachinko busting or licensed them like Rare and have other developers work on it with very little input from them.

So does anyone have any fangames or clones to recommend? I've played Curse of the Moon and loved it, although it was a bit on the easy side. Haven't played the metroidvania yet although it doesn't look that appealing, not a fan of 2.5D stuff.
I've played Lecarde Chronicles 1 and 2, the first was poorly made with rifle skeletons hitscanning you from off screen in the 3rd(? It's the town part) chapter especially when there's a copious amount of platforming during that chapter. The second was more well made although it's also a bit on the easy side. I liked the neat "gotcha!" deaths the game had, like a puppet show that literally went on forever and you see your character die and decompose into a skeleton.

I don't know of any decent fan-games. There was one I played well over a decade ago, really well done, but it was in beta at the time and I never got far into it because I wanted to wait for the final release, and I don't know if it ever happened. I think it had an Egyptian vibe to it though.
Some other general Metroid-like games though:
Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight
Ribi Rabi (this and Momodora are more cutes/chibi anime than dark and brooding, but Momodora does a good mix of both)
Hollow Knight (exploration platformer with nice atmosphere and hand-drawn animation reminiscent of Cuphead)
Blasphemous (a 2D souls game/Castlevania thing, decent but not great, wonderful atmosphere though)
Valdis Story Abyssal City
The Vagrant (this and Valdis Story are both sorta exploration based platformers, but focus more on cuhrazee combat with air juggles and shit, like DMC).
I've had Dark Devotion on my wishlist for a bit but never got around to it, it looks alright though.
Axiom Verge is a straight up Metroid-like though, so it may suit unless you're really keen on the gothic setting.

I haven't watched the series but how does the description in >>16841742 not reflect the MEDIEVAL church? Maybe it doesn't reflect the MODERN church, but the medieval times had it's far share of corrupt and despicable popes. I'm guessing that guy is suppose to either reflect one of them or is a combination of them. It is still bullshit they had to bring that up and couldn't have just had a more optimistic view like the games did.

Much of the medieval Church was chill. Some of the greatest saints came from that era. And they all came after a previous age of the Church that was genuinely persecuted under the Romans. They didn't suddenly take up the habit of acting like psychopaths themselves, now that the Roman system was out of the picture. They didn't lift one hand to defend themselves that whole time - and then suddenly they became monsters afterwards? It doesn't make sense.
Byzantine emperors became Christian however, and their punishments were typical enforcement of law and order. The few things from that period that gets especially frowned on is that Byzantium executed queers and exiled Jews. Seeing how these two group corrupt modern society, I think the Byzantines were smart. By the 7th century, the real animals were Muslims, who killed indiscriminately, conquered the Middle East and slowly chipped away at the Byzantine empire. So Christians finally fought back and tried to reclaim their old lands and help the Christians still living there. The only people who cry about this are revisionists and Muslims. God forbid people are allowed to defend themselves. To them, you're just supposed to bend over, love getting raped, and taxed to death.
As for later periods, like the persecution against suspected witches and such. I would just repeat something CS Lewis said: He said that the only reason the modern mind recoils at persecuting witches is because they don't believe witches even exist in the first place. To them, everyone is automatically innocent of such a thing. But imagine putting yourself in the shoes of someone who lives in actual fear of such witches. Witches were especially predatory on children. Any decent person would hate someone like this.

I hate to carry on, but even the Inquisition is overstated. A lot of the stories thrown out there first started as Protestant memes (same goes for all of the anti-Spanish rhetoric when it comes to the New World). If anyone's got time to waste, this documentary is pretty good, where researchers are now finding out how mundane and innocuous much of the Inquisition actually was.

I'm not Catholic, so I have no allegiance to popes. Just to get that out of the way. But which popes do you have in mind? You posted a picture of Pope Boniface, but he wasn't even liked by many in the Church in his own day and people accused him of having assassinated the previous pope. Even the Franciscans (Francis of Assisi had died by this point, so I mean budding movement) disliked this pope and were imprisoned by him. So why are you coloring the behavior of millions of other people over one dude..who they didn't even like themselves?
Secondly, you're putting homos, warlords, and corruption under one umbrella, but historically speaking, those 3 tended to be separate. Julius II was actually called the "warrior pope", for example, and fits your warlord description, but he disliked the degeneracy in the Vatican, and especially disliked his predecessor (Alexander VI) who was a fat, thieving syphilis ridden whoremonger who also slept with his own daughter. Alexander was also a Borgia, and like the Medicis, responsible for much of the corruption in Italy. Pope Julius made war throughout the Italian states and finally exiled all of the Borgias that were left. At the end of day, you can say his warmongering was unseemly for a "cleric", but I wouldn't call him a faggot at least.

I have holy mail, and the mandatory glasses to see the sphere. Even then, his rush deals 135 of damage plus 35 when you impact the wall, out of the 230hp I have at that level. This is something you need to experience, anon, download hard type and then you'll see what I'm talking about. And it's funny because normally you have to use the holy sword to avoid damaging Richter. Not here, here you either go all in or you fucking die.

I hated Miles Morales before Spiderverse, and I still hate him now. However, Spiderverse is a feast to the eyes in every way, it used it's resources like crazy, every technique and change of animation style is amazing. I was specifically talking however on how they used frame rate to convey a message. When Miles started as Spiderman next to Peter, he was animated at 30fps while Peter and Gwen were animated at 60fps. This made it look like Miles' movements were slower on purpose, specially in comparison to the other Spidermen, and when he mastered his powers he was animated at 60fps.
I think this was an amazing use of something most movie directors don't even consider like frame rate, and that along other stuff like the use of the theory of color and other stuff makes the movie great, regardless of >capeshit or >poz.
In a technical level, spiderverse is amazing, and my point is that even though higher frame rates will ALWAYS be beneficial in video games, in movies, a different form of media, you can play with these, so faggots who complained about Netflix's Castlevania frame rate in the animation saying it was too low, because it indeed was, have no fucking idea how animation works. More frames don't equal to faster or better movement in 2D animation. And that's not to say I'm defending that shit, I hate it as well, but animation is certainly not the reason why I hate it, not even one of them. And you know anon, I wouldn't blame you if you or other normalfags don't see this, after all normalfags only like the movie because "OMG black spiderman!", but as a person that actually understands animation, it is nice to watch, it's a shame the story does ruin the experience, but not enough to stop appreciate a job well done in a single aspect.

Sympathetic villains? He's Satan. Not much to care about there. And everyone gets obliterated anyhow.
The rap was cheesy, sure.

Don't kid yourself, anon, they tried to portray Satan as sympathetic. And normalfags like it because of that.

That's 100% true to the original Devilman manga. It's also clear that he's still the villain and that he's caught in a cyclical hell where it allays ends exactly the same way over and over forever and that this is his punishment. Are you just unfamiliar with Devilman and related works?

>anti-gun
It's not anti gun, it's anti war. Go Nagai has explicitly said so himself.

crybaby was anti-gun, whereas the original manga was anti-war. Nagai died before Crybaby was released.

They make Satan into a literal assfucking faggot, and then make him sympathetic. That's the problem.

Nice defensive hand waving of blatant propaganda. It's not "cheesy", it's degenerate.

They literally have lyrics about guns killing people and therefor that's why they're bad. Basic normalfag anti gun propaganda.

10 years? The last good one was when Toru Hagihara was making them and that was a lot longer than 10 years ago.

Stop being dramatic.
I'm the one canceled Netflix years ago now. Just because I said Crybaby and Godzilla weren't that bad (at least in comparison with their other shit) doesn't mean I love it. If I did, I wouldn't have even canceled. Pick another enemy.
