As the years go by more and more games are adding "RPG" mechanics such as stats, buffs, and focus on narrative (I.E. longer and more intrusives cutscenes). But ultimately fail in their attempt as their games are still with their genre's constraints but with more mechanics and features that constrain it more than help it. Originally the closest games could be to RPGs were dungeon crawlers like wizardry that tried to simulate it via early computers with RNG being affected by algorithms and the story to be a bit more barebones or more or less restrictive to allow for dungeon exploration and loot gathering. Nowadays very few games follow this idea. Games such as Wizardry, Demon Gaze, Etrian odyssey, Dungeon Travelers, Stranger of Sword City and the Xth Generation games are the closest to one can get to a "true RPG" in video games. While they do have their small but dedicated fan base it seems like the idea or meaning of RPG in video games has gotten very muddled if not lost for the most part. So does this mean that exploration of the idea of an RPG is dead in video games or such ideas are to remain a niche within a niche?

>good rpgs
>not even actually rpgs
>they're good games that have little to do what most people think of what rpgs are
as soon as you add anything fun, it's no longer an rpg because rpgs are actually shit games to begin with.

I know it is not politically correct, but I like RNG. All my favorite rpgs make use of it more than others. Sure, some behemoth will occasionally appear and buttfuck your party in the early stages of the game. But why not?

As far as I can tell, the term seems to be defined strictly by game mechanics rather than story or narrative.

>more and more games are experimenting with rpg mechanics
>this means exploration of the idea of RPG in video games is dead
How does this make sense?
RPG is a genre more like horror than FPS. Horror doesn't say much about the gameplay, but says how the tone should be as a result you get horror games with many different styles of gameplay. FPS says outright that the gameplay is a shooter in the first person perspective which limits it a lot more. Resident Evil, Amnesia, Darkwood, and Knock-Knock and even Five Nights at Freddy's are all very different. Even within just Resident Evil 1-3 are much more different than the later games. Meanwhile with FPS they are all pretty much the same. Call of Duty, Doom, and Rainbow Six all play relatively similarly. First person perspective, you aim your gun and you shoot.
Similarly to horror, RPG doesn't imply any type of gameplay and thus you get games like Final Fantasy, Baldur's Gate, Demon's Souls, Disgaea, Rogue, Dragon's Crown, Fallout: New Vegas.
>New Vegas is a shooter though
It's a RPGFPS similarly to how FEAR would be a HorrorFPS, it's just requires different changes to the game.
>But any genres can be mixed
RPG and Horror both mix really well with any style of gameplay, Look at attempts to merge RTS and FPS, you get games like Nuclear Dawn, Natural Selection 2, and Executive Assault that completely separate the modes of gameplay with obvious breaks.

I meant to say the idea of a traditional RPG is dead.

The term "RPG" has become extremely muddled over the years. The term means "role playing game", of course, but the meaning of "role playing" has faded into obscurity. In general, role playing means choosing and acting out a specific role and sticking to it. In the context of video games, this translates to making a character build with unique game mechanics and trying to overcome the challenges of the game with the options one chose to have access to. Games where role playing is a central mechanic and where viable mechanically different builds exist can be considered role playing games. While new cRPG releases have been declining, there have been many attempts to cross RPG mechanics with other game genres, sometimes creating actual RPGs in the process, such as E.Y.E. or the Souls series. The RPG genre will likely stay niche in the future because it usually demands the ability to plan ahead for longer than most other genres, a skill that is especially unnecessary for most popular games and game genres.

An immersive experience where you roleplay as one or more characters and build their stats.
Immersion is key and all the number crunching shitty games people call "RPGs" are not roleplaying.

In terms of RNG i only really dislike very rare drops, and instant death spells/attacks with less than 50% chance to work, since they're already expensive to cast/use in the first place and usually useless against bosses, too.

If you play as a character it is a role playing game.
Super Mario Odyssey is a role playing game because you play the role of Mario.
Ocarina of Time is a role playing game because you play the role of Zelda.
Even typing that out made me angry with myself.

Stretching the definitions of things always pisses me off. At this point what should RPGs be referred to as class adventure, tabletop lites, turn based exploration? When "elements" of rpgs have been far spread out to the point most don't even notice than what does even mean anymore?

I haven't gotten around to it, ran across a review of it by a dungeon crawler autist and they said although they give you a pile of avatars to choose from they ended up seeing their clone almost instantly in game. I got a giggle from that, could see that really rustling someone.

Yes, you play the role of John Zombie, AKA the Doomguy, and XP in Doom is actually referred to in game as "bullets" and you can collect more bullets to power your weapons and kill more demons, like using mana to cast spells.
