What actually caused this game to be cancelled? I've heard the press release about "precious development procedures being leaked", but that's a fat load of bullshit and I suspect it was conman's prima donna hissy fit that killed the project. This also coincides with the cancellation of Universe and the series as a whole being stuffed into a freezer to put more resources in MH.

If I had to guess, between bad blood with Inafune's departure and the series suffering diminishing returns, Capcom probably thought they didn't need Megaman or their other IPs anymore (except as mobile fodder) due to having a supposed too-big-to-fail money maker like Street Fighter. Speaking of apparently dead Mega Man projects, is X Corrupted coming out any soon? Did any other X fangames pop up in the meanwhile? How about Gunvolt Chronicles? It was a pretty fun game but it's fairly short, with very little replayability because S-ranks don't really encourage a faster or more aggressive playstyle, just a bit more on the memorization of enemy locations and realizing your air combo and bullits do not reset if you bounce off the ground/ceiling/wall with a diagonal dash. I get wanting to stick to the 8 boss/stage format but at least make the levels huge and have the X1 level order influencing other levels and whatnot. But I have to admit I loved having subweapons be like a secondary weapon to augment your moveset instead of outright replacing the all-round great Buster with situational or useless(X5, Shining whatever's subweapon) trash.

Would fluid-er gameplay, even just a camera change really make it a different game if those two aspects were present? Not really, I think it would be a suitable "modern" version of the games. I mean I really like both Legends games, even Tronne Bonne to an extent but I can see where some people might call it outdated and I personally wished it played faster and fluider, especially with 2's water dungeon where the framerate and movement speed is like 25% of what it normally is like.

That's what I was thinking as well. I thought about what I would do for a control scheme on the old 3DS without circle pad pro/c-stick. Strangely enough I got the idea from Monster Hunter's moment to moment gameplay. You rotate the camera with the D-pad or circle pad pro. Hold L to have Mega Man free aim which centers camera over his shoulder, but can still move around with circle pad. Without pro pad you use gyro to aim. Tapping L centers the camera behind Mega Man as releasing it leaves camera behind him. R lets Mega Man dash in the direction you're tilting with circle pad. You can even do a 180 break dash by flicking the pad opposite of your dash direction and dashing again. B jumps vertically. You can also dash jump for extra distance. There are no invincibility frames while dashing without upgrades. Challenge is about watching your footing while platforming and in combat. Bosses are often in arenas though there are some that change rooms as you hunt them down. You can use touch screen to activate target cam which lets Mega Man face the blip on the radar you tagged. Bosses will have bigger icons. Tapping L will always face the target. Though you can double-tap L to forward camera instead. X fires Mega Buster. Hold X to charge. Y uses sub-weapon. Select pauses game and opens the backpack which lets you use items (also on touch screen). A button is context. You can even use your strength upgrades to pick up, throw, push, and pull. Also A lets you grab onto stuff and drive vehicles. Circle pad pro zL and zR can be swapped for jump/weapons/camera/quick select backpack etc. Switch will still have gyro but for PS5 and SexBox weapons and dashing will probably be triggers by default. PC will map firing and dash to mouse with a toggle between buster and sub-weapon.
And before I forget, you can charge the Mega Buster by holding X. There's a bit of risk-reward with charging as you're putting off rapid fire damage for a stronger shot. Also some enemies will be resistant to normal shots. Charge shots will break open weak spots and blow through most cover. This isn't getting into story, level design, or characters and it's a better control scheme for jump and shoot man. Dashing is jumping laterally than vertically.

"Diminishing returns" seems pretty close to what must have been going on with Megaman in the 2000s. Megaman must have had a hard time getting a funding at Capcom. It had like 15 games on Nintendo handhelds, that were dirt cheap to develop for and let you get away with selling those games for full price anyway. Four completely new series. While, ever since X6, consoles only got X7, X8, a Battle Network sidegame, and a shitty JRPG, none of which probably met Capcom's insane profit margin expectations. Battle Network series could be treated as a cash cow, but even it had worse sales as the time went on, despite them cranking up the merchandizing more and more with every game.
Console releases were out of the question by the time the DS era started, and both of the DS series sold worse than their GBA counterparts. This probably was expected for ZX, but their Battle Network replacement flopped, too. Then console manufacturers tried to capitalize on the indie scene to fill their digital stores with at least something for people to spend their money on, and budgets associated with a Megaman sunk even lower when they made Mega Man 9.
So, over the course of some 6 or 7 years, mainline Megaman stopped getting console releases, failed to become a massive handheld hit, its unexpected hit side series stopped bringing in the dosh, and it was finally relegated to indie-level shoestring budget games (but with a healthy dose of disk-locked content, as per Capcom tradition). Inafune was as eager to attach himself to Dead Rising's success as any other executive at Capcom, but his own pet series wasn't doing well at all. That must have been why they got rid of him in the end.

So I looked up more into carbons. They appear to be a beta lifeform of some kind. Probably as a reconstruction of ZX's humanoids. Outsids of having mechanical implants they're more or less human. I suppose the next evolution for a new Mega Man series post Legends would be nanotech disguised as magic. I rather have a new BN series in that timeline for an RPG. An RPG would probably be good practice to test room-based 3D level design and camera control.

Considering how humanity and robot's paths intertwined in ZX, Carbons are a logical next step of them being so interchangable, that an assembly line factory and test tube baby clinic are one in the same. The last pure human lived for thousands of years by whatever advanced medical science humans had by then. Carbons have the adaptability of robotics in that they can just replace parts with bionic implants like eyes and limbs or even entire bodies like Bon Bonne. Consider that the dev team designed one of the nurses to have a "syringe gun" arm that would have helped at her job but decided that it'd frighten patients and players too much.

I think both timelines follow similar paths of evolution. The next logical step post Starforce would be lightspeed travel. Problem is no matter outside of plasma can come close to the speed of light in tact. Since Starforce can turn humans into radio waves it makes sense for humans to evolve (or be reconstructed by aliens post extinction event) into an energy-based lifeform. As for the robot timeline having nanotechnology in every organism on the planet is the next step. As the environments get harsher life will have to rely more on non-organic systems to survive. They banked hard on selling e-reader stuff (and also Chip Gate, Beast Gate, etc.) as physical DLC, and while BN4 didn't have as much cut from it as later games (though it was the only game that let you have a permanent soul unison if you had a proper card for that), it only got worse from then on. I can't claim that that was the reason why the sales dropped, but they did release Zero 4 without any e-reader functionality after experimenting with it in Zero 3, so I assume that it didn't catch on with everyone.

I just wish the Starforce serie was more recognized. Sadly it couldn't extricate itself from the BN serie. Though the storyline, ost are so much better (and i ain't a hater of BN, i love both series i'm just judging it objectively).
What's more sad about it is that even with the 3rd game that totally erased the few mistakes of the second game, the sales just weren't enough.
I don't think we will ever, ever see a SF4. It's without any doubt the least Megaman serie that they would think of. Everyone is waiting for X9 (what i understand), MM11 came out, and with that Zero collection people will wait for a new game. And by the time all of those are released (if Capcom finally decide on actually doing something else than emulate its own games) everyone will have forgotten about Starforce.

Are they, though? Even reploids seem to be more biological than anything. They have DNA, and it's the DNA that X takes to get their weapons. Hell, in some games, even mechaniloids seem to be biological. Xtreme 2 has you collect DNA from enemies that seem to be mechaniloids. They're "robots" the same way Replicants in Blade Runner are "robots." They're "artificial humans" like in Dragon Ball Z. They can be cyborgs or even fully biological things that happen to be grown in a lab.
Also, I'm already bumping this Mega Man thread, what the hell makes Reploids so special anyway? That they have free will? You're gonna tell me Rock didn't have free will? The best argument I could see for Rock not having free will is that he is reprogrammed for evil in a few games, and he shows that he is bound by the three laws of robotics in 7. But then Reploids get reprogrammed all the time, too, showing that they're just as bound by their programming as Rock was. They seem to be more advanced physically, going back to how they seem to be largely biological creations, while Rock was a full on robot, but that's never what the series says makes them special. I misspoke. Robot or not, they are explicitly a different kind of being than a carbon. With Volnutt's situation, we're talking, at the very least, a change of species, if not more. Unless, all along, Volnutt, Juno, and all the rest were also carbons, just serving a different purpose than the ones living on Earth's surface. I guess that could work, but the babifying thing is still weird.

They weren't completely bound by their programming and could evolve, though you have to remember that they were all X knock-offs and probably weren't as sophisticated as he was, especially considering the existence of mavericks.

The same way a wild animal gets "reprogrammed" by rabies. There's nothing inherently stopping our own brains from being reprogrammed other than a lack of understand and proper technology.

He wasn't a combatant until recently as of the first X game. It's not obvious considering how focused on combat the games are, but X really does not like fighting. It's why he's always questioning if he's doing the right thing (and why he's such a bitch in X7). X only joined the Maverick Hunters after realizing there really wasn't a better way to deal with mavericks, at least at the time. And it may not have been common knowledge X was the first. Cain would have obviously known, and probably the upper reploid authorities, but the common reploid was probably none the wiser. Or, given the was the first, they may have all seen him as the "prototype" that they all were improved on. Zero was just made to be really good at fighting and everyone recognized that.

Starforce 4 looked like it was suppose to have a new plot with hacking. Though it would be better to use that theme with a new series rather than continuing an old one. Forced to use onions because I guess my state ISPs hates 8kun. I'll buy a VPN next month when I have money.

Yeah, people really hated the shit out of Star Forces' battle system, so it's no surprise nobody wants to make one with it. Probably doesn't help that Capcom thought it out too much either, for example the tutorials for the original game for some ungodly reason leave out how to block, and it's not immediately obvious that you even have one.

Well Switch itself is such a scam and there is already a lot of games that would suit on mobile or on an actual portable console (hello 3DS). I think they'd to rethink the gameplay a little bit but it shouldn't be too hard honnestly. SF is already playable with a single screen except a few mini-games that aren't mandatory. Also a good idea (considering a lot of switch games are made of local multiplayer) would be the possibility to have multi save and therefore play without online requirement. To avoid cheating there could be no reward if it's local.
Honnestly the problem is really that the serie is starting to get old now and attract some attention on that game would be extremely hard. I highly that an actual SF game on Switch would sell more than 100k. Japan included.

Yeah and that's really cool. That's why i'm not craving a SF game. At least they succeeded at giving a (good) end. While others series either seems endless, or in DASH's case just aren't solved.
That's also why SF is a gem in Megaman serie, almost unknown, good story, cute characters and all.

Most humans were able to avoid the fighting and had the Maverick Hunters to protect them, which wasn't the case after Elf Wars (which are before the Zero serie). Also humans seems to gradually get more power over the situation "thanks" to X.
