WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME HOW GOOD PREY 1 WAS /V/?
It's blowing my mind right now and it came out nearly 15 years ago
the faint qualms i have with it is that it's sci-fi horror and that stuff just aint scary but my lord this game's fantastic.

The game's shit though. Pretty much just a basic corridor shooter, even nudoom accomplishes that much.

The good?
>ambience
>aesthetics
>some gameplay elements
>the outside of the station is fucking huge
>The Phantom animations
>some non "in your face" story choices
>fucking mimics
The bad?
<crafting
<poorly balanced crafting at that
<you become OP relatively fast
<threats never really catch up to your power
<those fucking Zero G sections
<the outside of the station is too fucking huge
<except for two, story choices don't change much in your current playthrough
<the fucking mimics
Most people will dislike it for two reasons:
a)It's not Prey 2. And the trailer for that looked amazing and fun.
b)The ending is pretty much "lol, it was a dream".
I don't watch trailers that much, so the first didn't affect me, but I can understand the disappointment from the series longtime fans.
As for the second, I didn't mind because it's not the first "your choices weren't real" story I've seen. Pathologic had that for instance. This sort of stories amount to YOU as a player thinking about what you chose. The end result is the same, sure, but the path you walked to get there is what gives that ending the meaning you feel.
Of course, if you're just playing it to shoot up aliens and transform into cups of coffee, you do end up missing some good moments in the story. Heck, there's quite a lot of backtracking you need to do in order to trigger two special cutscenes. I'd wager a good chunk of people never even saw those cutscenes because of that.
The other problem was that the interesting details were very, very sparse. And the "find audiologs from dead people to piece together the story" didn't work for 90% of them.
As an example: right at the beginning, the tutorial is basically prompts teaching you how to play the game. But as you do them, the scientists get puzzled with your actions. Something that works really well, because the player is simply doing as he's told to (by the scientists and the tutorial prompts) and feels confused because they're getting alarmed as you do these perfectly mundane tasks.
Upon playing it a second time, you might notice what's wrong: when they tell you to pick up a box, they were expecting you to use Telekinesis. Or when they tell you to hide, they expected you to use the mimic power (that's why there's a chair in that mini-room too, that you comically use to hide behind, looking even stranger to them).
Now imagine you try putting these events into audiologs. Try telling the story without involving the player. It just doesn't work, it's what every audiolog felt like after that opening scene. The game starts off great, but never gets better from there.
It's Arkane, so you know what you're getting: stealth, super-powers, some weird weapons and a bunch of verticality to atleast half the levels. But they tried to tell the story the same way Bioshock did, and frankly, that was the worst part of Bioshock anyone could copy.
Heck, I still mantain that for all the good things System Shock did, the stupid audiologs were still the weakest part of the game. Great voice acting, great writing, but doesn't get me invested in the story.
Hearing crewmembers bitch about each other doesn't even register in my brain. S.H.O.D.A.N. telling me to do something or she will turn my intestines inside out does register. As fear.

Oh and this trend of:
>you make choices throughout the game
>the game tallies up your "choice score"
>decides if you're naughty or nice
BUT
<lol, you can pick the end result and ignore that
Is a trend that needs to go and stay go.

Yeah, but consider something:
OP might be a young fella. Aka: people who grew up without Unreal Tournament, Quake, the original Doom and it's many wads.
If someone like that, used to modern shooters starts playing the new Doom, they'll shit their pants at how "good" the game is. Because it's one step in the right direction and a marathon in the wrong direction, but that's besides the point.
Same goes for nu-Prey. Just picture people used to Skyrim and shitty "RPG"'s where you "pick your style!" and can "go everywhere!".
Put next to those, Prey is indeed quite good.
However, if you've got a few years behind, you probably already played things like Might and Magic, the Ultima series, or heck, since it's Arkane, you surely have played Arx Fatalis.
Put Prey next to this and it pales as a mediocre game.
All I'm saying is to cut the young'uns a break, they don't know better.
For the record, I did think nu-Prey was fun and entertaining (for the 10 bucks I got it for).
It's not the Prey 2 we wanted, but it holds up as a solid game by itself.

It's boring as fuck until you get Za Warudo stand powers
It's funny to Za Warudo the Nightmare + Telepath + saving zombies in the same room
It's boring again since all enemies(including or mainly Nightmare) are weak ass, too few of them and Za Warudo+Jetpack is too OP
Had no patience to replay without Stand Powers since
THE FUCKING LOADING TAKES LITERAL 2 MINUTES AND 15 SECONDS EACH TRANSITION, AND THE FUCKING GAME FORCES YOU TO BACKTRACK EVERY FUCKING MISSION
I'm using a fucking MX500 and the DLC insta-loads everything like it should, no excuses for this broken ass.

No. nu-Prey is an FPS/RPG type thing. Emphasis is on scavenging and resources, which actually makes for a pretty decent game. Main problem is a lack of "content", especially with regards to enemy variety, weapon selection, and a fairly short campaign.

And yes, the same person >>16800507 saying that old Prey is shit. Old Prey has some decent weapon variety and some interesting themes, but the gameplay itself doesn't hold up. Nu-prey is the opposite, kind of generic and limited, but with good exploration-based gameplay, and we all know which is more important in a video game.

100%, I only disagree when he says the alien neuromods are useless.
Quite the opposite, they stop time for you and give too much damage and also stun the enemies, you can just overuse the mindshock skill and not even bother with the weapon.
There is also a neuromod that heals 25% of your HP when you take damage, making you immune to small damage or even healing you when you take small damage.
When you look all these skills(mimic teacup to pass through bars, summon a NPC alien to play alongside you, ect) and weapons and physics-based gameplay from outside, the game looks great, but it's fucking shallow, no chance to really use the OP skills or the gloo weapon or do anything smart or "emergent gameplay" since the boring map and enemies don't give you the chance, Prey is a great tech demo and a horrible empty game.
Too few enemies, too far away, too predictable, too many hardlocked areas, too few areas, horrible map design.
Play the DLC instead(THEY ALSO FIXED THE 2 MINUTES LOADING TIMES), it's less boring and empty and there is a lot more content(new enemies, new skills, new guns, gun skins, progressive difficulty), the DLC is what the game should be if it wasn't rushed and merely artificially lengthened with bullshit. The DLC itself is a retarded gimmick of permadeath/time trial retardation, but at least it gives you freedom, options and there is things to do in the map.

The stop time power isn't in the alien tree, and it's by far the strongest in the game, not only stopping time but more than doubling your damage per shot as well. Basically spam that all game and use the shotgun and you wonder why they even bothered to include any of the alien attack powers. The damage powers are also pretty lackluster on their own, generally doing nowhere near the damage of a shotgun without the time stop boost damage, plus the cooldown and effectively more expensive ammo unless you run back to a bot to restore for free every 3 shots.
When you say the DLC, you mean that roguelite thing Mooncrash? While I liked the concept, I thought the actual gameplay of that sucked shit compared to the main game.

I tried this when doing the "lol, no neuromods" achievement. And yeah, it does make you think why bother with Alien Powers at all.
They all compete for the same resource (blue space juice) and if you upgrade your weapons or dump some neuromods boosting that slow time (costs what, 4? 5? That's how much ONE alien power costs) and they severely outdamage anything in the alien tree while also helping you dodge attacks.
I'm not even sure why it's there. This is pretty much "Bioshock 3" and the Shock series never had this "slow time on command" schtick, not even Infinite with it's time-travel shenanigans did it.
It looks like they wanted that feature from FEAR or Max Payne, but couldn't balance it out with the rest.
I mean, the powers are funny and midly usefull here and there, but If you invest in that Soldier tree, they're outmatched and outclasssed on EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME.
