I like the idea that large expansion packs are making a comeback. Monster Hunter had a big one now pokemon is trying it out. Better that then pitiful dlc that Botw got. Xenobalde 2 had a large epac if I remember as well. Waiting to see how big the Fire emblem dlc is when it's fully released, maybe it'll be enough to be called an expansion too. Expansion packs bring me back to twenty years ago when games were in a better place.

Expansion packs used to be expansions to already completed game to actually expand the game itself. Thus, the game had to be completed in the first place in order to expand it.

I'm surprised honestly. Sword and Shield seem blatantly unfinished, but I was expecting them to finish it in a third version like they usually do. I have a feeling that this DLC did kinda kneecap the development of the proper games though, but that's Game Freak being retarded for you. I'm still half expecting them to release a version in 2021 or something that has all the DLC in it, and I'm expecting a second expansion pass for another 30 bucks that adds content. Those of you astute at math will realize this means that they might make you spend 60 bucks for probably slightly less content than the main game (given how barebones SS is it could be close though) which would honestly be a better deal than most third versions. The worst parts of USUM was everything it inherited from SM after all. I do like that they'll re-add some Pokemon for free, although I recall them saying they won't do that but whatever this is Game Freak, contradictory statements are normal. After GS and especially after DP we won't see another delay ever again. DP also came out an unfinished mess that everyone but me loves apparently. Although I will say Platinum at least fixed some of DP's performance issues. If you're the kind of person that likes the Wild Area then I have a feeling the DLC is a better deal than Platinum was, but if you're like me and think the Wild Area is an awful idea in concept and haven't even played the game because of it, I don't feel like this DLC will sell you on it. I will say that if these DLCs actually were in development at some point during SS it would explain a lot more than just one single Wild Area. Also, these will probably give Game Freak some more practice with HD development that they clearly desperately need. The future isn't as dire as I thought it would be, but it's not getting any better either. As for comparisons to other DLCs from, let's say, other Nintendo franchises, it's definitely more substantial than most free updates aside from the last Star Allies update, Welcome Amiibo, and some Mario Maker updates, but so far looks less substantial than most paid DLCs aside from the first BotW DLC which I'm pretty sure was filler to buy them time to make the actual Champion's Ballad part.

Saw highlights of the direct. I honestly think more and more every day that Sword and Shield were suppose to be 3DS games before they were ported to Switch. On one hand the DLC is what the games should have been from the start if the games were built from scratch on Switch. If you actually knew what the engine was, you might change your tune. It isn't like every other Game Freak game, which has it's own engine. Instead, it's cobbled together from Nintendo's SDK (BotW, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) and Lunchbox (Splatoon 2) with some of Game Freak's own code to fill in the gaps. Let's Go actually has a similar setup. What's really going on is, like much of Nintendo, they have no idea how to develop in HD. I mean they didn't have any idea how to develop in not HD either, actually. Clearly they've got some sort of problems, maybe Ohmori isn't the best choice for Pokemon, it seems like he doesn't want to be there and would rather make some waifu RPG like you'd find on the Vira or something. Before the DLC was announced, I thought they didn't have time to finish SS because the Wild Area was added to the game early enough in development to get it done but late enough that it might not have been in the original design document (BotW released slightly after SM came out, and about when SM came out would be when SS went into full production). Now with this DLC it's clear they were trying to finish SS but at some point said fuck it and came up with some completely different ideas to make into DLC instead. It would give them more development time to flesh out those ideas, but unfortunately it probably impacted the development of the actual games. That seems like a very Game Freak thing to do, they're not lazy, just bad at their jobs.

Also, while we're vaguely near the subject of the first Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, there's something important I was made aware of recently. Did you know: in Korea they released a demo of the first PMD games for Windows? It's actually apparently a port of the DS version, and could very well have the entire game in it given the file size is bigger than the DS game itself. However, the file seems to have been lost to time. If I had any reach I'd try to ask some Koreans if they had the file on an old PC or something. It's the premire software for Switch Lite. Wild Area still looks tacked on at last minute. I don't doubt Game Freak's work ethic. If the Switch Lite is hackable then it's virtually the same Tegra X1 chipset. Just a slightly modified version of the board to fit the Lite. Red box Switches also use similar revision for better power saving. Other than that hardware is still the Tegra X1. The DLC did likely take away some staff and resources from the game, but I doubt it took away that much that was planned for the game, if anything. You're also forgetting the fact that they implied there's going to be another set of DLC coming out, meaning another 30 bucks for even more content that will probably be less than B2W2 anyway. On the other hand the 7 people credited with anything related to battles seem to have mostly done their job aside from cutting some moves that were hard to program and not balancing Dynamax for competitive singles (or at all seriously why does it stop Choice items why does it allow items at all what the shit).
