Alright, want me to go in detail? Well, you know how competitive oriental countries are - with their schooling for instance. If they fail a test, or fail their entrance exam into a prosperous school, then it's almost as if the world is ending. The suicide rates are almost as high among young orientals as it is among transexuals. Anyways, that's just a look into their competitiveness, but you see this competition elsewhere, if you're keen and aware of their society. I don't like generalizing so I'll just pick Japan as my target here, but understand that what I say about them is reflected also in pretty much every other oriental country.

One thing to understand if you don't already is that Japan is a collectivist society - but not the kind like in National Socialist Germany. It's a 'selfish' collectivism, a kind which is hard to explain and I'm sure there's a more technical term than the improvised one I have chosen. There are a lot of mannerisms which I can't list but I will try to capture the essence of it here. Your typical Jap is very respectful and doesn't want to be disrespectful no matter what. They take more than what they can handle in their occupations, meaning work hours for your typical Jap is outrageous, and what time they don't spend at work or sleeping is at the bar or pachinko parlor under the cozy thumb of the Yakuza (which is another story for another day). They drink a lot, probably as a coping mechanism to deal with their purposeless lives. It may have all stem from the major religion in Japan, Shintoism. Remember that a lot of Japs are self-proclaimed Buddhists as well, but few are actually practicing buddhists, meaning they're about as faithful to the religion itself as your typical western Christian woman is, who has sex out of wedlock and is as base as one might think of a 3D whore. The moral worldview of Shintoism boils down to "Mind your own and respect the kami" or something. I don't even think Shintoists themselves know what they believe in. As you could probably expect, Shintoism doesn't have much in the ways of moral guidelines, so the state fills in where it can. This is why you get so many Japanese "nationalists". I use the quotes because they're more focused on keeping bad influences from getting in than they are focused on taking out the existing bad influences, like the yakuza and their failing economy, as well as some laws which shall remain perpetually in place because it would be considered 'disrespect' to attempt for remediation. Well anyway, the point of these paragraphs is that they aren't really collectivist, but a hollow-nationalist. You might say they are outwardly nationalist but not inwardly. If they were inwardly nationalist they'd try and fix the biggest problems they've got, like the Yakuza, high suicide rates, high actual crime rates (the kind that the pathetic and useless police don't report cause they'd rather sit on their asses in their 交番) , and extreme gambling addictions (which is reflected in the gacha we all know and love). While this might be a tad presumptuous of me, I suspect it could be that the japs feel these aforementioned problems are simply aspects of Japanese life and, in their tradition-loving ways, want to sustain them, foolishly believing that all traditions are positive in outcome. Take that part with a grain of salt, though, cause it's just my speculation that I've observed. The former argument is more likely.

tl;dr Japs are very competitive, and also hate competition. If they can't have something, for instance, an anime girl who doesn't exist in the physical world and will never reciprocate the feelings of the jap, they'll lash back by humiliating the girl in the next doujin they draw as a way of 'getting back'

Judging by how high most to the Atelier protagonists jump you can tell jumping works differently for them. Why is jumping important? Because you can use a characters jump to learn more about the world they live in. We can tell from from Ryza's jump that either she is just a different species from humans altogether or that mass and gravity work differently for her. This is particularly important because it probably means that the people of Kurken Island and the rest of the planet that Kurken rest on probably perceive time very different than us. Atelier is a series of JRPGs with a heavy focus on crafting. In Atelier Ryza they've changed a lot of series staples in order to make for a more refreshing experience. They have done away with standard turn-based battles in favor of an active time battle system. The crafting has been majorly changed as well. Where once you would just pick ingredients and traits from a list, there is a whole tree that you can fill out in whatever way you see fit for each and every item. Only real downside to everything is the developers have strangely decided to go back to a system from an older game where you don't actually "use" a consumable when you use one. You use a charge on a consumable instead. This makes things a little more easier than the should be. JRPG veterans should probably start on hard difficulty to have a more satisfying experience.

It's a solid game. I like the alchemy system a lot, much better than the Mysterious trilogy's crafting, and the characters are fun. Not 100% sold on the battle system, kind of preferred the standard turn-based one but it's not bad.

I've only played Ayesha on Vita but it was fine and ended up being my favorite Atelier game, didn't notice any horrible frame drops. The FPS issues started with Shallie I believe.
