I think I finally get WHY all these companies are trying to appeal to the Chinese demographics, with the reason being more than just "Muh 1.2 billion people". Just look at all of the games that are just straight-up hacks, ports, rips, and clones of Western and Japanese games: https://bootleggames.fandom.com
Seems like a lot of companies just decided that if they gave these regions the games, themselves (Since there's already "proven" to be a market), then they'd make all the money rather than these "basement pirate devs".

Pokemon is furthing cucking itself. The lore and story has the potential to be something pretty interesting but now they have to shut their fucking mouths because the chink government is on par with leftists when it comes to being offended, so now they can't experiment with an engaging story. Not like it matters, because niggers in the new pokemon crew can't write for the shit and the directors are fucking stupid retards.

Na, it's about making more money than they already make. The whole thing about having to get back in what they spent is bullshit of the century. Look at all these movies making a thousand times what they cost to make.
There you have cinemas, DVDs and so on which all take a little of the pile and it's still that large.
With video games you no longer have any of that. EA directly puts it on your harddrive you paid for.
(((They))) are always making profits. They just wanna make more. So they sell it to chinks and russians who would never even buy that crap at western prices.

No, it does not make any sense at all.
China is a market full of bootleg versions of the shit they are putting out on the west. Fact.
But it happens there because there's no enforcement of IP like in the west. If the same happened here, you'd see the same colossal amount of bootleg in your shops as well because it's far cheaper to produce.
So thinking that they can introduce themselves in a market where they are not able to economically compete with the bootleg versions of their own crap and will not have the law on their side for protection is absolutely ridiculous.
Consider that their current strategy is the "games as a service" for the players or in other words, they put a game on life force with your money being drip-fed to keep it alive. But this requires player investment, a decent chunk of their userbase sticking to the same game for years.
What do you think is going to happen if they try the same thing in a market full of clients that chase fads and drop games after one or two months?
It's really not the bootleg copies or piracy that they are thinking about, they truly think that 1.2 billion customers, with a sizable chunk being an upper class of spoiled but depressed brats and an economy that grows by leeching the rest of the world is the best market to invest into.
That's the real and only reason.

they already spent that money on v-bucks. companies go to china because it's hardly takes any effort and the sheer number of population makes it worthwhile. just look up how many potential screens there are for movies (who cares about fake numbers when they still generate money somehow?)

Sadly, I'll agree with this anon.
It takes 0 fucking effort to sell your crap in china.
Mainly because the lowest, dumbest and worst products we have are much better than their average market choice.
If you put a game out in the west, you're fighting an already saturated market, where people are very likely to dislike one or two things about the product and end up passing it up. And people do dedicate themselves to games for a longer time here.
What companies want is precisely a consumer that has very low standards AND drops their product in two months. They'll be primed and ready to buy out your new crappy game, unlike a westerner, complaining that you just put out a CoD game last year, why are you already releasing another?

Dunno why you mentioned translation when that has nothing to do with anything so far. Unless you mean movies where I'll agree, translating subtitles for the chinese and putting the movie there is cheap as fuck and how most movies recently don't become a flop.
The difference is that you can't really make a "bootleg movie" that's as profitable or even more than the original, just compare the chinese Star Wars movie with even the recent trilogy.
However videogames, especially mobile crap or anything that they can just rip assets off, is an entirely different thing. They can pretty much make something that's about 80% close to the source quality and put it in the market with almost no budget behind it and it stands toe to toe with AAA crap that cost the devs a lot more to make.
And this happens every day, with more crap put out taking away players from your shit onto newer shit and unless you can put out a game every 6 months, you're not gonna survive for long in that market.
>>16795037
Movies are a different story since cheap copies can't be made and put in the cinema. Pirate copies in a DVD sure, terrible versions of the same idea too. But to make something close to the real deal and put it on the big screen, that's not something your average chink can do.
Refer to my previous paragraph on why with videogames this actually works.
The Chinese customer wastes a ridiculous amount of cash in games for the dumbest shit, far more than anyone in the west. But they lack loyalty or affiliation and they do jump from trend to trend a lot. The mobile market handles this well since devs for that kind of games can actually put out something new every few months. AAA devs are not able to keep the same pace and they need customer loyalty to actually have a market presence do to their current marketing strategy.
So while it will work for a while for them, China will end up not being cost effective.
And with any hope, their economy will implode anytime soon anyway.

>AAA devs are not able to keep the same pace and they need customer loyalty to actually have a market presence do to their current marketing strategy.
my point was even an AAA release will make enough of it's money back to warrant a release etc. basically the same way a pc port is so cheap even a few sales are easy profit. and that's if they don't go the extra step of re-using the assets to shit out a cheap f2p version for internet cafes
>Movies are a different story
it's the same sheer number advantage, even at reduced price and with the government and chinese companies ripping you off you make enough plus. and that's not even considering outright pandering to make some of the bloated budget back the west alone could never make up (which you then can easily fudge with hollywood accounting).
there's also a lot of chinese being poor as fuck so all they can do is watch it in a barn with a projector (even with a cheap camrip) or play games in internet cafes.

>Notably, China imposed a near-complete ban on video game consoles in 2000, fearing the addicting-like impact of games on its youth; the ban was ultimately lifted in 2015.
From wikipedia. This is well known, even now in order to sell games there the government has to approve them. It may be getting worse too.
>Whereas in 2017, around 9,600 new games were approved, only around 1,980 were approved within 2018.
Bootlegs in China have nothing to do with companies refusing to sell to the Chinese, but with the Chinese government refusing the products.

It's not just that. The chink gubmint holds a tight grip over entry of foreign goods. Additionally, anything foreign companies put out generally has very little presence and genuine stuff is drowned in a sea of shitty counterfeits, knockoffs, or bootlegs.
>"games as a service"
Stop using that propaganda term, it lends credibility and legitimacy to the push to erode customer rights, just like when faggots say """Technological Protection Measures""" or """Digital Rights Management""" instead of copy protection or software activation.
It's called Servitization, i.e. wantonly turning goods into services to keep the shekels flowing and cutting you off and taking everything away if you stop paying. In the case of software it's also known as Service as a Software Substitute (SaaSS).

Yeah, the Switch only officially released in China a month or two back and the selection of games are super limited (there was a pic of their eshop on launch day and it was only NSMBU DX). All the games prior with Chinese language options were for countries in the Asian market that read/speak some form of it like in Singapore and Malaysia. Games that actually offically make it within China have severe limits and cuts like no online multiplayer for Mario Kart 8DX

Also, consider the following:
Due to it's censorship laws, video games have historically been a very niche hobby. If a game company got it's games into China, they'd make a fuckton of money because while we're sick to death of open-world, tower climbing bullshit. China doesn't have the same level of exposure with that stuff as we do. So they'll lap it up since it's still new to them.
