First pic related while didn't exactly kill it off since it was the end of the trilogy, made sure there weren't going to be any more games based on with how hard they dropped the ball with the story. A final nail in the coffin so to speak.

Dead Space 2 was almost as expensive as Witcher 3. EA didn't have ridiculous expectations, Visceral was practically pissing away money with nothing to show for it.
For the amount of money spent on Dead Space 2 alone you could do the entire development cycle of Resident Evil 4 and that gave us DMC1 too while having more content than any of the Dead Space games.

6 is a really odd case, i don't think it really contributed to the death blow very much; its the type of game you can look at and think that the future is still kinda bright.
Nothing about it really strikes as a structural decline in quality, which is very contrasted to the all around poorness of 7.
6 just feels rushed.
The remake thing really was a lost opportunity, though i really think it was mostly due to timing that did that in.
Probably wasn't a good idea to release it right when it was clear X wouldn't sell, though i guess it would be pretty hard to tell when its just the idea of a "new" one is bad or when the series in general needs a rest.

Dead Space 3 didn't even break a million in a month. The entire franchise has been a massive moneyhole for EA with no returns. In spite of this huge mismanagement of budget by Visceral(imagine spending 50 million dollars on an 8 hour long linear shooter within 2 fucking years and another 50 on marketing and still not breaking even), they wanted an even higher budget. I don't know how anyone could look at the situation of Dead Space franchise and blame anything but the cancerous tumor that is the average western game development studio.

it's wasn't just that. you can bet the microtransactions which fucked the balance sideways and make it more a action game came from EA (to rightfully recoup their investment or not, it didn't help much).
as for visceral, a studio in LA isn't cheap. there's a post mortem out there that explains it in more detail, but for comparison EA montreal costs only a third to run and visceral simply didn't have the pull to justify the location.
and let's not talk about how EA handled hardline which shat all over dice sweden's work yet somehow those swecucks were not only allowed to shit up mainline battlefield again and again, but battlefront too. you can bet your ass if visceral would've worked on those EA would have made even more bank since that shit sells on name alone + actually being a good game (unless the eternal swedes fucked the franchise for good with V, after they already tried with 4)

The Duke Nukem franchise died for other reasons. Forever was just the final nail in the coffin.
George Broussard of 3D Realms kept medling with DNF's development. He was never satisfied and kept putting stuff in it and taking stuff out of it.
3D Realms could have kept producing Duke spinoff games like Time to Kill to keep Duke relevant but they stopped doing that which kept the franchise in limbo for years. When Gearbox released DNF it was too little, too late. If it had been released in the mid 2000s, it might have had been better received but George's unreasonable demands for the game kept it from that proper timing.
They had a build of the game that was 90% complete in 2001 but Broussard still didn't think it was good enough. The build is still out there, but Randy Pitchford at Gearbox is keeping it from being released for some reason. Seems like Randy wants to keep Duke buried now since Gearbox are supposed to be a "woke" company and all.
As much as I'd like to see a new Duke game, I don't want to see Gearbox cut Duke's balls off and make him a shadow of his former self. We don't want "Woke Cuckem". Maybe it's better if the franchise just stay dead.

Yeah, I will admit that that the first Mass Effect was by far superior (considering the fact it didn't go with the mindset of it being a trilogy and was before EA got ahold of Bioware), but I can't help but to hold the second game in a positive light considering it was what got me into the series itself along with the character writing a la Firefly since I didn't own an Xbox 360 at the time. I watched a bunch of James Bond recently, the ones with Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan, and it was sweet. It does not rate well, it's a shit game.
The story is quite lack luster, the cutscenes are garbage.
At the same time, the dodge mechanic had potential, it have been made into a great bullet hell with area denial, where you had to dodge into specific places. The graphics and effects were cool, for what I remember, it played quite smoothly.
Overall, it was a huge wasted oportunity. It could have been a suspenseful thriller with absolutely maddening action scenes; insted we get a shallow game devoid of identity.
