Back in 2009-2010, the Xbox 360 had numerous exclusives that made the console much more appealing than the PS3. Think of games like Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect II, Super Meat Boy, Bayonetta, Limbo, Castle Crashers,Tales of Vesperia, etc. Then they somehow managed to lose most of these exclusives to Sony, which was followed by a serious lack of exclusives on the Xbox One.
Is there a real chance for Microsoft to recover during Generation 9? From the news we've gotten so far, it will be more powerful than the PS5 (albeit not by much) and their acquisitions of several studios such as Double Fine (inb4), Ninja Theory and Obsidian Entertainment might mean they're getting serious again about competing with Sony again. On the other hand, Microsoft purchased Rare back in 2008, and we all know how that went.
If M$ were smart, they'd ride the coattails of the Banjo-Kazooie hype after the character was included in Smash Ultimate, and release either a HD rerelease of an older game, or something new altogether.

>Always Online Kinect
Even though they had to backpedaled hard on this, it basically destroyed them and handed Sony an easy win(just like the 600 PS3 handed a huge advantage to M$). You might have forgotten, but when they first announced the console, because of the "Cloud" and "Always Online" it was available in a few countries. Hell they showed Witcher 3 footage on their console, even though Xbox wouldn't be available in Poland, talk about irony. The, then director, saying that "people who want an offline xbox should just get a 360" just added fuel to the fire.

Microsoft has been trying to get rid of the Xbox brand since 2014.
Profitable it may be, Microsoft doesn't want to be a gaming company, and undoubtedly realize that they are competing against themselves with the Xbox brand.
They don't want to make game software, they want to work on cloud computing.

Microsoft is doing exactly what I predicted as soon as they started doing crossbuy on their platform. They're doing their best to merge their console and PC markets. It's pretty brilliant, frankly.
I'd say that they've done well to salvage the situation after firing that retard of a brand director.

They killed Windows Phone with their autistical pushing of UWP(removal of the android apps runner).
They want to make a fucking appstore for Windows, no matter the cost. Microsoft wet dream is to profit a percent of every cad/adobe/vegas installation, just like Steam or Appstore.
The question is why retards still buy xbox, the only reason to buy a console in current year is exclusives, and xbox has none by design. Or maybe Xbox was always crap, and only the MASSIVE marketing campaigns make idiots buy and shill for it in first place.

Their initial announcement (shitty always online DRM, discs tied to accounts, mandatory kinect, etc.) killed absolutely momentum they had. Even if they backpedaled on it, the damage was irreversible. >[MS] only continues to exist because normalfags eat up their shitty software
MS only exists because of massive amounts of vendor lock-in, inertia, baby duck syndrome, and under the table deals with OEMs to ensure they get paid before you even buy a (laptop/prebuilt) computer (perpetuating their stranglehold on the market).
>>16794427

it's still a fucking mess. Group Policy policies may be removed without notice between versions. Registry hacks get reverted every major update. Disabled services also gets reset on updating. Moreover, you can't choose updates to install (unless you run your own local update server, which is a big hassle, or you rely on 3rd party tools, which is rather sketchy). Same deal for (((telemetry))).
Lastly, updating is a bad idea in general because you have to pray updates won't fuck shit up. Remember the 1809 version update that had a bug that deleted people's \User\%USERNAME% folder?

The internet helped kill MS. People can get into PC gaming earlier than ever. Nintendo is the only company that has worthwhile exclusives, and even then their games have been so heavily emulated already.
Gaming Journalists dying out didn't help the XBone either. No one wants Halo 18. To make a splash you need a big killer app that promises a new riveting story.
These games exist very rarely for consoles because anyone with a good idea can download Unity.

Although that's provided new hardware doesn't simply require Win10 by default by that point, newer hardware is alread starting to shit itself on Win7

Mass Effect 2 was never slated for exclusivity (thanks EA), though the first one was due to being directly published by Microsoft
Super Meat Boy was a PC port, and if you're going to bitch about console exclusivity, there was never a PS3 or wii version; it didn't go to the other consoles until the PS4 and wiiU
Bayonetta was Sega's call. The PS3 version had problems out the gate but was eventually fixed
Castle Crashers… really? A literal Newgrounds flash game is among your fondly remembered exclusives list?
Tales of Vesperia never came out on PS3 internationally. Microsoft's contract stipulated seemingly never-ending international exclusivity
Lost Odyssey was never released on any platform other than X360 so I don't know what you're bitching about

>lack of any sort of backwards compatibility from the getgo
>nearly ditching the entirety of their initiatives to fund independent developers
>attempts with integrating the xbone as a windows 10 ecosystem device
If they had focused on backwards compatibility from the getgo it would have presented an enormous prospect for people who already had an Xbox that didn't want THE XBOX (NOW WITH LESS GAMES) and they really ought to have put a leash on 343 from going full retard with halo5's monetization, and if they know better, they'll yank on them to prevent them from killing off any and all drive for halo when they roll out the monetization for MCC in march

Randomly asserted that one of my flash drives was "damaged" and "repaired" it destroying the data on it. Eventually it got so obnoxious I made the switch to primarily booting linux with windows on the side. To which the windows installation had gone and "Hey there's a problem on Drive C: let me fix it for you :)" and broke my bootloader and also managed to kill itself in the process in a way that the recovery media I had made refused to actually fix.

Unfortunately for Microsoft the average consumer does want an always on always connected to the internet spy camera and microphone in their living room but they don't want it hooked up to their tv.
That's the real failure of Microsoft this generation; they lost to Amazon's Alexa and Ring, Apple's Siri and Google. They saw all of this coming a decade before it became big thanks to their industrial espionage and used everything they had to compete with them. Ruining some barely profitable game brand to push this strategy wasn't a big deal to them in the bigger scheme of things.
And it wasn't a big deal to the video gaming world either.

The acquisition of developers is irrelevant, Microsoft will run them into the ground eventually. Think about it this way, Obsidian and Ninja Theory are both known for their single player games, under Microsoft their first games are both multiplayer Games as a service titles. Microsoft have a high concept vision and their studios must obey it, no integrity, just production line games. I don't care about either studio, they were both shit, but they are examples of the way that Microsoft think, and nothing has changed in 20 years.
You could probably take any rando from /v/ and they would do a better job at managing one of these studios or even the whole division than the executives that Microsoft hires.

Almost no performance improvements over windows 7. Usability is still a fucking nightmare and makes technical illiterate boomers seethe. You can prob continue to use win 7 for another 10 years or so, often most games still have support for windows vista around lol.

They're staffed by tone-deaf idiots who are more about focusing on retarded twitter social issues than stuff that actually matters like having games that are good.
Look how full of themselves they are that they thought to themselves, "oh, let's redesign Chief Thunder from Killer Instinct to show how woke we are despite the fact that literally no one has ever had a problem with him before." This is the kind of stuff they prioritize over having decent exclusives. Phil Spencer actually was a worse choice for the head of Xbox in the long term than Don Mattrick. He also approved that absolute garbage Battletoads reboot.

>How did Microsoft fuck up so hard during Generation 8?
By being leftists. Leftists always fail at everything.
>Is there a real chance for Microsoft to recover during Generation 9?
All companies run by leftists are failing. There is no chance of Microshit recovering. Soyny itself is also failing after they turned into a leftist den.
>it will be more powerful than the PS5
PCs will outpower them in less than a year, making their walled garden machines obsolete.
>their acquisitions of several studios
That will amount to nothing, since they can't manage good products anymore. They only care about pushing marxist propaganda, which ensures that they will fail.
>If M$ were smart
They aren't. Leftists are born dumb and born failures. Hence why they chose their failed ideology.
Also:
>console faggotry
Everything made for consoles comes to PC either as ports or as piracy by emulation. There was never a single reason to ever buy any consoles in the whole history of the industry.

The meme about spencer being "a true gaymer" rages on still today somehow. The guy is a complete fucking idiot. If mattick got his way the cloud gaming they are trying to use to market the ninth gen would already be a thing.

The lack of games was a big one with Xbone. They just, for some reason, couldn't secure exclusives, and the ones they had were shit. But it's kind of a double edged sword that MS fell on with it IMO.
A lot of the devs MS had for exclusive titles got taken over by SJW-tier cunts, and the games they pushed out were trash.
Perfect example is Mass Effect Androfaggotry. People loved the ME series and were excited for a new one, and then THAT came out. As someone who doesn't own any new consoles, I was tempted at the announcement of the new ME game, but then when I saw it….. holy shit what? This is the POWAR OF XBOX OEN PROJECT TWO SCARLET SCROPION COOLGUY GIRAFFE they keep bragging about? Fucking kill me, no thanks.

Barring the obvious (E3 2013), it didn't help the original Xbone was so underpowered it had a default resolution of 900p, at a time when 1080p was firmly the norm and 4K was right around the corner. It doesn't look good when your console defaults to a resolution lower than its competition, i.e. Sony and "the 1080p Dream" for the PS3.
