I started doing this in Garry's Mod a little.
Before any questions or shitposting, I'll tell you that I only really play singleplayer, or occasionally a mission/adventure map I like to play using my blood, particle effect, retexture, sound, and gun mods that you can't use in any old HL2 mod. Recently, I just kinda walked around the classic rp_downtown map everyone always plays on in DarkRP. It was completely silent except for my footsteps, and it was just me. No other person could possibly join since it was a singleplayer game, nobody knew what I was doing since I wasn't broadcasting my gameplay by any means, I didn't talk to anyone via a voip of some kind, and I just kinda walked around.
It reminded me of doing the same exact thing in Halo CE multiplayer maps 1.5 decades ago, except back then I didn't really think about it and just felt bored because I didn't have anyone to play with. Now that I think about these things in CY+5, it just fills me with a weird and isolated feeling.
It's weird.

You know that sounds kinda like going through your old maps you've downloaded over the years
>all these empty maps
>Walking through a halloween map from 2009 by yourself
>the myriad of actually dead gamemodes that only really exist in the downloads junk
>empty fortwars map without the music that leads up to the game starting

I like doing it in online games. Visiting corners of a world that at one point meant so much to people but are now completely forgotten. It's like wandering through a dying mall, people used to find romance there, get their favorite things there and spent some happy and horrible days in those places. Now nothing happens and the crushing loneliness drives people away even more.

I know that feel. I also get it when I see really high end places that are abandoned. You see all the time, effort and memories sunk into a place. Gone.
>No other person could possibly join since it was a singleplayer game, nobody knew what I was doing since I wasn't broadcasting my gameplay by any means, I didn't talk to anyone via a voip of some kind, and I just kinda walked around.
Personally it's stronger though whenever I'm playing a server or game that's dead. The fact anyone with a computer could join but wont because they will never find you makes the feeling of absolute desolation so much stronger.
The last time I remember really getting this feel deep in my bones was from exploring Second Life. You can tell 100s of autists dedicated the better part of their lives in that game. I was just wandering the game world and it was essentially and endless city absolutely empty and dead. Makes you wonder what it was like when people actually played there, IF people actually played there, how much time the owner invested in it, was this the original owners entire social life?, and other things. Other things that give this feel: Dead MMOs, empty minecraft servers, dead hl1/hl2 mods that still have servers, etc…
This is probably why the dude who made minecraft server sneaking threads did his thing and why people play weird obscure games time forgot.

>occasionally idle in my gmod ZS server in the vain attempt at hoping people will join
>practice making barricades, taking notes on how they can be defended and where they can be attacked from, basically squidward's snow fort
>exploring the lifelessness of the map as the game timer does it's thing and keeps starting new waves that never come
>people rarely join and if they do they never come back
>still pay to keep it up anyways since I invested so much time into getting it set up right and I've occasionally hosted gamenights with it
it also reminds me of better days, gmod ZS was probably the most fun i ever had with a game despite all the bullshit that came with it

Same. Your pic related gave me the thoughts even before I read your post.

The video gives a similar vibe, and IMO isn't the usual streamer garbage. I remember entering an empty server of a multiplayer RPG (not exactly mmo) where I spent too much time and being overwhelmed with memories and regret. I still think about it sometimes.

I joined a dying /v/ Wurm serb that evoked this feeling a few years ago, there were a couple left but it was still like stalking the lanes of some old civilization you've yet to live up to.

The buildings in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter 'kind of' manage it. There's nothing like the real spoop of being in an abandoned place alone IRL, empty hotels are particularly headfucky if they're not cookie-cutter buildings in towns. Pripyat must be fucking cool, all that old shit in russian lying around it'd be like a parallel dimension.

I keep coming back to Tribes 2 hoping there'll be something - there usually isn't, and the discord pub doesn't have much activity besides events. One time, however, I discovered some dude hosting a Tribes 2 RPG server, even had download links in the server info box for it. He was so excited that someone joined, I felt bad when I told him that as soon as I connected, I remembered why I never bothered with this mod. It's very, very barebones and full of placeholders, it isn't as good as the Starsiege: Tribes RPG mod.

For me, it's exploring old clan maps. It's really odd to look around places were groups of friends would just hang out, particularly ones with personalized messages and places for members. This one map for Jedi Academy had member rooms decorated by the members even with website links and shit. Felt kind of wrong to be there really, like trespassing.
And then there's stuff like this.

>The Grimgrvy Experience: https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=105358840 (3 maps, surrealist stuff, mostly scenery based with light combat but these three maps are really fucking cool.)
>TheBasement Collection: https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=1557507125 (3 maps, but one of them is a copy of 1 of them but without events or NPCs for sandboxing or making Machinimas/screenshots with. Heavy combat focus, exploration, scenery is cool._
>Avenue Odessa: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1532974030 (A Garry's Mod port of a short HL2 mod where you pretty much escort Odessa through City 17 [I think, don't remember well]. Heavy combat focus.)
>Lost Collection: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=758173852 (Unfinished story map pack. Don't worry, the story is only environment based, so no cringy dialogue or original characters. Just you, lost and alone in a dangerous location. Exploration and combat focus.)
>Miiga's Maps: https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=619645071 (A lot of these are just sandbox/RP maps, but a lot of them are action/adventure/puzzle maps with varying levels of focus on each.)
>Unknown World: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=528590494 (Exploration, very light puzzle solving, heavy combat focus with very light story elements. A cool one to be sure.)
>More Gun: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=186338096 (3 maps bundled into one addon, very heavy combat focus, music, a tad difficult. It's pretty goofy and doesn't have any grand storyline or anything. You're supposed to spawn in your own SWEPs here, and you won't be given anything to fight with out the gate by the map itself.)
>Another Universe: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1385946295 (9 maps with a TF2 aesthetic. Spawn your own weapons in, because the map will NOT give you any at the start. Don't be ashamed of giving yourself SWEPs that heal you, because it gets fucking hard at several points, ESPECIALLY towards the end.)
I hope you enjoy, friend.
