Games that are horror themed, but not necessarily intended to be scary. Bonus Points awarded to wacky or parody horror games like Zombies Ate My Neighbors.

There a couple of Kid Dracula games.

In truth though all of the early Castlevania games were all "fun horror" games. Not in the parody sense but in the drive-in, B movie sense.

Stubbs is a pretty good time if a bit repetitive by the end but they made it decently varied considering there's not a whole lot to do with a zombie, and not a lot of games with the 50's Americana aesthetic going on, either.

>Never heard of that one until today

There's a reason for that, beside it being a poorly named a sequel for starters. The movement feels slippery because characters have momentum, less weapons, the score is instead of being a way to get more neighbors/lives back is now useless, and it's not even developed by the same team just uses the same engine.

File: 49fe3a2dd733f4d⋯.jpg (113.46 KB, 496x600, 62:75, cooperamberimp.jpg)

I have access to an Xbone, so I recently I ended up playing the only exclusive it has Rare Replay, I decided to get the most out of the collection deemed all the challenges on all 30 games. Naturally that eventually brought me to Grabbed by the Ghoulies, I didn't exactly have high expectations since it's pretty much only remembered as that one Rare game nobody played, The cover art also really isn't something that would have made be want to rent it back in the day. Ghoulies looks to like a game that doesn't have much going for it, so much so Banjo Nut's n Bolts has Easter eggs about how nobody played the game, like one level has a giant trash bin that just filled with copies.

Then I actually played the game, and It's allot better then I was expecting. I takes a relatively simple control scheme, all you do is pretty much run around and hit things with the right analog stick, and sometimes find power ups hidden around the level. But it's always mixing things up with different rules, the amount of health you have changes in every room, and you are can get restricted to how you can beat enemies, things like you have to use your fists, you can only uses objects to attack, you only have a set number of attacks, you can only kill this type of enemy, sometimes there are enemies that can only be killed by fire ,or you can't kill any enemies. Failing a challenge will result in the grim reaper showing up and once touch from him is an insta kill, he starts off moving slowly and will gradually speed up, you can also get lucky and knock him over to buy you a little distance and time, it's possible to knock him out a window and get rid of him altogether, or you can even use him to kill other enemies buy putting them in his way, so sometimes failing a challenge on purpose is worth it if you can deal with the Grim Reaper.

The power ups you get mix things up well too. there is player speed up, invisibility, enemy Freeze, one that makes smaller clone of you to fight enemies, one that makes it so your weapons don't break or have unlimited thrown items, and Invincibility. finding one of these can take a hard room and make it much more manageable. There are also challenges you can unlock, doing 20 of them gives you the final challenge which is a gauntlet through the entire game again, only this time your switched to the female character, your health is always set to a low amount, and you get no power ups at all. I appreciate when a game has a finally test for the player to use everything they've learned.

The game might not be much if you just breeze through it causally, but I found quite a bit to enjoy going for the 100%

I'm aware, although I've never got around to Ghoul Patrol. There's always emulation, but I wonder if either will release on Nintendo Switch Online? Supposedly, there's also a Zombies Ate My Neighbors movie that's been in development hell since 2011.

And I've heard about the Super Nintendo Addams Family game, but I've never seen any gameplay. Looking into it, it looks like a fairly competent game.

>>16790962

I was looking specifically for more parody horror games or stereotypical stuff like Monster Squad. I figured Castlevania would eventually pop up in the discussion. And it's more fun to talk about games that rarely seem to have the spotlight or even games that have neat mechanics or concepts but aren't used or copied in anything else.

Maniac Mansion is one of those cases were I think the consoles version ended up being better than the PC release. Especially now that Nintendo had the Wii remote and now the Joycons, I wish there could more Point N' Click Adventure games in recent years. It's fun imagining Nintendo having a staple Point N' Click series like how Mario is their platformer, Zelda is their adventure, etc. and what that game would be like.

>>16791083

yea Ghoul Patrol is pretty trash. There have been some attempts at spiritual successors to Zombies Ate My Neighbors, but no great ones that I'm aware of. Monster Madness (XBox360/PS3) comes to mind, the PS3 version is almost-kinda-ok. Monster Force for GBA is decent-ish. Seems like it would be easy enough to just do the same game but better but everybody fucks it up, usually on multiple levels. There's probably some twinstick roguelikelikelike steamtrash that copies Zamn but I wouldn't know about it.

Zamn does have some romhacks, and they usually include bidirectional weapon cycling, which brings the game to life anew.

Played pic related and enjoyed the fact it had many pulpy horror tropes. Vampires, werewolves, zombies, gargoyles, the occult, lovecraft, graveyards, etc, works very well combined with the noir detective theme. I have never played another Discworld game or read the books so I am not sure how regular 'fun horror' is in the material but here it's a welcome mix and enjoyable if you're new.

It's a pain in the ass to get the game working on modern computers. You cannot access the options and the load savegame menus from the main menu for example. Instead you have to star a new game each time you start the game, skip all the intros and dialogs and then once you can control the character you can finally load your savegame.

The Playstation port can actually be played with the Playstation Mouse and there is a controller plugin to emulate that mouse.

However the PC version was on three discs, while the PS1 version was condensed to just one. As a result, the cutscenes are in very low quality and a lot of camera angles were removed from normal gameplay.

I don't think that would bother me very much as long as the opening is less than 10 minutes, I've played clunkier games so I'd like to think I have some patience when it comes to this sort of thing. And at the very least I'm happy there's even the option to save instead of having to restart from the beginning like how some older games were or if you've had a computer with a memory leak problem.

Looking into the game more, I can see why I've never heard of it. It was only released in Europe. I wonder how much of a pain in the ass it would be to track down an original copy of the game and an older PC with Windows 98, but I guess I can debate that once I try it out and if I rationalize it'd be easier to play it on original hardware.

It only takes a few seconds of hammering the Esc button to get into the game.

Here is how I got the game working on Windows 10:

- Install the game (full install) and apply a no CD crack.

- Download https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/ and unpack it into a safe folder.

- Start DXWnd and open the dialog under Edit->Add.

- Under the Main tab enter a name and the path. With "W" and "H" you can set the size of the games window. I recommend a multiple of 640x480, e.g. 1280x960 for a 1080p screen. Also select "Desktop center".

- Under the Video tab set this:

Window style: thin frame

Initial virtual color setting: 16 BPP

Screen resolution: Native

- Under the Mouse tab set this:

Cursor visibility: hide

Mouse Clipper: ON

Then hit the OK button. You can now start the game from the DXWnd main screen. Every time you start the game, you have to hit Alt + Enter once.

Sounds like something went wrong during setup and now files are missing in the game folder.

Try running DXWnd as admin and if that doesn't help, reinstall the game.

No worries anon, the fact it never has been re released anywhere has made it fall into obscurity hard and is really only known in the adventure community at this point. I see recent posts have all been about getting it to run, if it hasn't already been mentioned; there's a fix by a user named Loma over on My Abandonware that made it work like a breeze for me;

https://www.myabandonware.com/game/discworld-noir-48j#download

Once installed, all I had to is just extract the fix into the game folder and ran the game simply using the tin3_dxd exe. Hope that works.

An extremely absurd amount of thanks, anon. This worked beautifully, very beautifully, simple, and smooth. To think it could've been this easy to begin with.

I have a mandella effect where I keep thinking that was a haunted mansion game.

Considering how much horror content that game has (which feels kinda out of place how serious it is during those moments?), definately. 2 horror stages in single player, several horror missions in Arcade.

Man, that mission where you have to kill zombie monkeys while the music sounds like The Shining. It's supposed to be funny but DAMN.

I made a game called When It Hits the Fan that's kind of "wacky horror". Zombies Ate My Neihbors was absolutely an inspiration for it. It has zombies, robots, demons, and aliens invading all at once.

Wait for a sale though. Normally it's on sale for 50%, but the bigger sales are 75% off
