I'm surprised this didn't get a thread yet due to the hilarity of the rumor, but apparently apple is making a esports gaming PC for 5,000 dollars. What's funny about this to me is that Steve Jobs actually hated games as quoted by John Carmack on a facebook post that went into the relationship between Carmack and Jobs.

>Several things over the years made me conclude that, at his core, Steve didn’t think very highly of games, and always wished they weren’t as important to his platforms as they turned out to be.

Now normally I would just laugh off this rumor and go back to playing Raidou. However It's not just Apple, all of a sudden due to the mainstream discovering competitive gaming, all these non gaming companies are trying to get a piece of the pie without actually investing in gaming itself. I would say keep an eye on "esports/gaming" merchandise to be the next big industry push, especially when it comes to the asian market that seems to go crazy for esports. Expect more Game Pass, Apple Arcade and Stadia like services from companies who have no idea what the fuck a JRPG is.

It's safe to assume that anyone who wants to get into esports™ either

>has a PC capable of running the esports focused multiplayer games, which I don't think they need a monster PC unless they want World of Tanks which intrinsically runs like shit on anything.

>is a child whom I doubt can convince a parent to drop 5k on something when they can just get a console for the tenth of the price

>has enough knowledge in building PCs or at least caution to ask on the internet what to do and most likely the answer will be building something that will most likely never reach 5K even with gamer chairs™ and gamer glasses™ and whatnot

I'm calling bullshit on the 5k price tag. I know apple shit is ridiculously expensive but I doubt the """"""gamers""""" on apple products want to be esports players. This will probably be dead on arrival like 90% of esports focused multiplayer games.

Maybe if they focused on the Semi-Pro and Casual-Pro markets, then marketed to normies - then 15 years ago they could have had a decent shot at selling an "All in One" portable gaming machine that had modular design for upgradability to semi-cutting edge parts with dead-simple installation.

But LAN parties are a relic of the past, so there's no real market for portable PCs outside of collage students and industrial use, let alone portable PCs with competitive-level graphics performance. LAN has been replaced with Twitch Streaming and Discord chats, so you don't need to move your system around to meet up and play leagues with your friends.

If LAN were still a thing (and it may come back as a fashion trend, never as a utilitarian necessity), then a portable and highly customizable full-powered gaming machine might be profitable. But that's a VERY small market.

Steve Jobs had a very good reason for hating video games, back in the late 90's he tried to make Mac OS a viable platform only to watch Microsoft steal Bungie and Halo away from them(they had to port it to the mac years later as part of the agreement). Getting Carmack on board back in 1999 to advertise Quake 3 on their platform was a mistake considering what garbage their OS was back then combined with the poor GPU compatibility and weak PowerPC chips that were available. The geeky crowd Carmack attracts did nothing but tear the Macintosh brand apart online.

There was a legitimate attempt by Apple in the 1998-2001 period to take video games seriously and they screwed up. This new esports thing is just cashing in on a fad or to placate investors as their OpenGL and Vulkan support has been terrible for the last few years since they've pushing their own Metal API. Right now PC gaming on Linux is in a better state than Mac.

BLACK METAL is at least practical and easy to deal with. The fad that I personally detest is tempered glass side panels. Had a case with those once. Never again. Instead of undoing two thumbscrews (or just pressing a plastic latch) and pulling the panel back, you undo four thumbscrews and then carefully pry that shit open because it typically sits flush with the rest of the chassis. The glass is fragile, so you have to take your time and absolutely cannot rush. That alone discourages frequent tinkering. It also has terrible heat conductivity. All for the sake of muh looks.

>>16790928

>I still don't understand how Apple is successful.

Jobs had a cult of personality built aroung him. In public, he always had that relaxed and slightly cheeky demeanor that projected the idea as though he was comfortably in control of the situation. He also rarely used impenetrable corporate speak, employing more plain wording. When the infamous iPhone 4 cellular antenna fiasco happened, he didn't apologize or put out a lengthy explanation. He just said "You're holding it wrong". That kind of absolutely brazen confidence is why lots of normalfags worshipped him: he was a Chad who made them his bitches.

Also this >>16790934 Apple positions their products as premium solutions for patricians, and that owning one will instantly elevate you above the dirty and jealous sour grapes plebs.

Apple is a cult. And like any cult, it's leaders create an environment conducive to making it's members feel like part of an exclusive club of enlightened people while bleeding them dry of a given resource.

And like any cult, its members wholeheartedly endorse it's leadership's bid for world domination.

Remember when Steam first came to mac? The first thing out of the Apple cult's forums was "OMG video games are so cool Apple should buy this steam company".

Prior to the 2000's Apple actually did try to compete with Microsoft. The result, however, is that management threw Jobs out, and decided that they'd make money hand-over-fist by giving free computers to schools and institutions (Because of the recent Clinton tax breaks) with the profit being made from the sale in software.

Except that never happened.

The company nearly went bankrupt, and they had to pull Jobs back in, who spent the rest of the remainder of 90's and someway into the 2000's fixing everything that was wrong with the company. Then you have what this Anon was talking about where Microsoft was willing to play dirty to ensure that they remained in top: >>16790889 So, after still having to fight hard to keep the company going, AND realizing that normalfags don't actually care about quality items and only go after whatever is shiny, Steve started having the company research and experiment with alternative electronics, which is how we got the iPod. And the rest is history.

Now Apple is a billion dollar company. And, everyone else is trying to be like them because they want a taste of that money, without giving one single damn at trying to figure out WHY the company is worth billions of dollars (Sort of like how everyone was chasing after motion controls after the Wii).

Utility of a product is not the only factor in consumer perceptions of products.

Aesthetics, for example are one such factor. People seem to love the aesthetics of Apple products. Hell, Apple fucking patented the rounded corners on their touchscreen based products.

Another factor, that I cannot recall the name of, is essentially the physiological feelings that owning a product gives the consumer. One of the reason that SUVs are oddly popular with women is because the large size of the vehicle gives them a feeling of empowerment and safety. That feeling of safety is not really backed up by statics though, there are alternative cars that are safer for both the driver, and other drivers on the road, and still have the actual utility of SUVs that most women get out of them, such as storage space and large number of seats for children and friends.

That's kinda already here.

Also someone pointed out how the aesthetic trends are self serving. Like the current alternative to black parts are white. But they tend to carry a small price premium for white parts. So people trying to stretch their money go with black parts unless they really want the white look (or special sale). And at the end of the year manufactures look at sales, go "Our black parts outsold our white parts so guess people still prefer black parts", ignoring it's cause it's a bit pricier. And since people aren't buying even white parts why go off the walls and offer different colours, which may cost even more then white.

As for why Rainbow Puke is popular, IDK. I'd say it's cause it's the only customization option out there, besides custom water loops. And in theory, even if you run the exact same setup as someone else you can configure it to look different so there's that appeal.

As for Apple getting into making Gaming PC's there's already enough cults around PC part's manufactures (see ROG), that it might get a FEW people to adopt it, but like 1% at most.

Thats just shit design found in cheap cases. Decent side panels you just pull off without any screws needing to be undone or buttons to be pressed. The glass is fairly strong and tempered.

>The coolermaster H500P is probably the best when it comes to airflow.

Like all conventional ATX cases it has a needlessly restrictive intake due to frontal panel design. At least it's mesh, but still. Something like Silverstone FT02 — or even FT05 — is superior for air cooling since their rotated mobo tray design means main intakes are obstructed only by the dust filter. Shame FT02 is fairly outdated in many other aspects.

The fans on the top panel of many standard cases frequently mess up the airflow actually. They're typically set up as exhaust and so can leech off some airflow from frontal intakes before it reaches socket area or expansion cards. In general, negative pressure design with more exhausts than intakes fucks up directional airflow and leads to dust circumventing the filters by seeping through any cracks. Those top vents are just for CLC / custom loop rads.

>But for good airflow you need good cable management, and for peak cable management you need a good case, a fully modular PSU and sleeved cables.

Just a cable management conscious case is enough. PSU is rarely in the path of airflow intended for CPU/GPUs, so modularity is more about convenience and QoL. Ribbon cables also have thinner profiles than sleeved, so sleeving is more about style.

>noctua

I love Noctua heatsinks and am eagerly awaiting pic rel 3, but their fans are overpriced, even when you take the quality and customer service into account. NF-A14/15 is just Thermalright TY-147 with twice the price. Their GT clone, A12x25, costs 30 $hekels. For fuck's sake, not even Noiseblocker eLoop/Multiframe are this expensive.

>>16791370

The problem with tempered glass is that a bump against the edge has a low, but still present, chance to shatter it. At least tempering means it won't fracture into large shards. That's not an issue with metal/acrylic.

Black metal would not be so bad if most companies making cases did no feel obligated to paint the insides for some reason. Having bare metal inside makes if far more convenient to ground yourself and dissipate static charge while tinkering. Other than that it's pretty practical, easy to clean and keep looking good, and it's very easy to find matching accessories.

Besides that, it's the same reason why Windows is popular: tech-illiterate and lazy faggots. Imagine average windows user, remove all minimal tech knowledge you are forced to absorb over time using windows, and you have an applefag.

>I meant the H500P Mesh. It has a dust filter instead of the obstructing glass panel of the P and M models.

That's the one I meant. It's why I mentioned the mesh. That mesh isn't usually the filter itself, though, on most cases. The filter should be behind it, but the pics on the official site are unclear. My ID might've changed

>It has 2x 200mm fans on the front, plus 3x 120mm on the top and 1x 140mm on the rear.

More isn't always better. Coolermaster Stacker RC830 back in the day (mid-late 2000s) could have up to 9 120mm fans IIRC, and that design was still eventually scrapped because it wasn't all that efficient. I mentioned above that the top vent can be a bitch. If it has fans, it will mess up the flow. If it has no fans, some intake pressure will seep out, or the CPU cooler will pull unfiltered air through it if it has no filters. Same for side vents.

I's why I like the wind tunnel design of FT02/05: you have 2/3 180mm intake fans that push the air through the volume of the case in one constant direction until it reaches the perforated "back". There's almost no way to mess up the flow, save for the PSU intake. That paradigm was proven by tests to be very good, beating seemingly mightier solutions, but was abandoned because it made the case water-unfriendly. Damn.

>It also has vents in a bunch of places to allow easier exits for the hot air in case you fuck up the air pressure

Air chooses the easiest path, which doesn't always follow the design. Having vents near GPU with no overwhelming positive pressure from the front can lead to the GPU just pulling air from those vents, and with it, dust. Also, if there's no well-directed exhaust, the GPU with a classic, non-blower style cooler might just start recycling its own hot air. That said, a quick look at H500PM doesn't really hint at those being issues. It has a perforated back and solid sides, good for directing active air. Although I still don't like that top.

When HardOCP still did reviews (before the owner sold his soul to Intel), they'd sometimes use an incense burner to generate smoke for the case reviews and see how the airflow really goes. Often enough, the results didn't match the marketing.

>>16791444

>I just like their fans' color.

That brick red for the rotors looks cool on the pics, but all the consumer Noctua fans I've used or seen live had a much more muted and dirty tone. I can see your point, though.

Back on topic, I wonder if Apple's esportsbox will have LGBT-lighting.

Asides for Proton there's Lutris that grabs up to date Wine, DXVK and D9VK versions. It doesn't deal with all the setting up of games but provides all the options you'll need in a decent GUI that makes it much easier to get started. There are a few games that you'll need to download and run some scripts to get them working, I've haven't encountered any yet since most of what I play is pretty old. If a game I installed doesn't work I just check out their page on it for troubleshooting.

It's pretty much what Valve is doing with Proton but it doesn't require Steam. Compared to PlayOnLinux it's a massive improvement, once it adds VM with GPU passthrough features there isn't much else they could do to improve it asides for built in mod and save file management.

Apple stole the icon grid design from Palm. Jobs threatened to drown them in lawyers should they object.

>Apple lead the market with ideas that everyone would adopt and would force the market to adapt to them

They had a very large army of fiercely loyal consumers who'd sandbag any possible missteps. Rossmann, I believe, mentioned that when, say, Dell users had their laptops fail on them, they'd go "Never buying Dell again", but with Apple users that reaction was a rarity. I struggle to recall another company with such levels of brand loyalty. Now that Jobs is gone, some are leaving Apple behind. I've seen a few that I know personally jump ship to Xiaomi of all things.

Got a link to the video? I'm interested in their setup and fan speeds. Everything in the path of the airflow will be a source of air resistance and so will result in drag, slowing the flow. Tha's just basic fluid dynamics. Thing is, if your airflow is very high to begin with because you're using powerful fans, like 140mm 1500RPM and above, then the airflow slowdown won't matter much because the outcome is still good enough, so the temps don't change.

Now imagine you're using 120mm 200RPM fans. Airflow obstructions, even seemingly marginal ones, become much more impactful because the flow is weak to begin with and, simply put, doesn't have much clout to effectively puch through even small barriers like dust filters. Cable drag becomes a problem. There's a good reason why heatsinks intended for low speed or outright fanless operation have large fin gaps, even though that sacrifices surface area within the same dimensions.

Cables in PCs were only a big issue back in the days when you'd have two 40 pin ribbon cables and a slightly slimmer one for the floppy drive that really blocked air flow near the CPU. People back then sliced the ribbons apart and stacked them on top of each other, eventually they were made that way.

Ever since SAS/SATA was introduced internal cabling that obstruct airflow in PCs is a solved problem.

Yeah, I remember slicing and then bunching up my IDE cables back then.

On conventional systems? Sure, it's not a prime concern. But in fringe situations like very low airflow SFF systems, thick and inflexible cables like ATX24, EPS12V and PCIE AUX thrown around haphazardly can lead to a 5°C penalty. When the thermal budget is already tight, that penalty is horrific. Ribbon cables were a godsend in that scenario. I will concede that very few people run such systems, though, but it's something that I've toyed with.

No, it can't. The fluidity of air is 1000x that of water, just imagine water being impeded by a fucking cable while there is holes and space for it to pass, to air it's 1000x more unlikely. As long as there is space to flow and even the slightest pressure/temp difference, air will flow.

Cable management is a retarded meme, like RGB. It does not help cooling or anything.

>As long as there is space to flow

>space

That was the problem. In a 10L stuffed shoebox of a case, space is at an utmost premium. Last thing you want is wrangling a 24pin snake literally clogging the free space in it.

>air will flow

Sure will, but the rate will take a sizeable hit if it was weak from the start (Ever tried using 200-250RPM fans in a cramped environment? The flow is shit.) and you have obstructive cabling. Hot ait isn't being pushed out as fast, torture test temps rise. Outlier case, but I indicated as much.

Flow as in exchange of air. I should have used other word, but it's not a laminar flow.

Unless you are using a turbine, there is no laminar flow in a case. Air is moved solely by pressure difference(that's why fans are used on the edge of the case) and it's too slow to generate streamlines, having a wire or even large block will not generate drag or turbulence in a already unsteady flow.

Air is too fluid to not have turbulence in such slow speeds, or to create steady streamlines with such few speed and airflow.

Cable management is a gimmick, get over it.

Anon, imagine a tiny SFF case with an ATX PSU mounted above the motherboard. Imagine there's a tight place inside near the 24pin plug. Imagine that the main cable blocks over half of the clearance between the PSU and the board because there's nowhere else to put it, and it has to be awkwardly cramped. There are no fans in this setup except one intake (PSU is fanless, CPU/GPU are undervolted and have aftermarket heatsinks), and that one is anemic. Now imagine replacing the main cable with a ribbon that can be easily folded and tucked away, so the clearance isn't an issue anymore. It's like replacing a shitty ye olde stamped out fan grill like the ones on old AT PSUs with a proper wire one.

>Cable management is a gimmick, get over it.

In this instance the gimmick lead to thermal diodes and my thermocouple both reporting lower temps at high load.

If you're talking about a big dick gaymen Full Tower, I'd agree. But saying that cable management is always useless is flat out wrong.

Yes it does, which games are you installing? It's the whole point of the installer scripts, to set everything up so you don't have to. At least that's the case in more popular games like The Witcher 3, Warframe, League of Legends, Overwatch… Haven't met any game which required more fiddling after installing from Lutris' page. All you have to do after executing the installer script is to follow the wizard the game itself provides, if that's what you mean by "set up".

Granted for 9/10 people on this board Lutris or Proton will work flawlessly. But I'm playing older games many of which don't have a page on Lutris so I have to create my own banners as well as fiddle with the settings to get them working properly. As they aren't sold on GOG or Steam I don't expect them to get a page on their site any time soon.

With the few newer(>2010) more popular games I've tried they've all worked without a hitch. The only game I can't get to work is Sims 4 thanks to DRM that's required but there's a workaround that I haven't bothered with yet since I'm thinking of playing it in a VM for easier modding.

The other issue I've run into are some odd cases on itch.io where the performance is terrible thanks to odd engines and development tools they use that have poor Wine compatibility. Using a VM or a more powerful computer will fix this.

You haven't seen a Mini-desktop setup then. I have been changing parts out on my prebuilt for some time after running my stock configuration for 9 years. It's a HP Pavilion Elite that was fitted with a Phenom II X6 1045T processor and a Radeon HD 6450 stock.

I since changed out the card for a Zotac GTX1050 ti mini, replaced the 300W Bestek PSU (after it started growling at me perpetually like the PSU fan was croaking) with a 650-watt Corsair CXM power supply (it's the only reputable PSU that Best Buy had and the other choice was a store-brand PSU that even the Geek Squad rep I asked questioned the merits of) and replaced the 90mm Foxconn stock case fan with a Arctic F9 Silent the day before.

I've been pondering a lot on modern CGI and why despite all the advancements can't hold a candle to old animation or even fucking ps1 era cgi. I think the problem is that the people behind modern cgi refuse to use 2d animation techniques like smears or even hand drawing parts that are hard to convey in 3d but make a lot more sense in 2d, like textured stylized faces or whatever. So the animation looks choppy as fuck because your brain won't trick you into seeing that 3d object moving naturally but a picture where lighting and shadows are manually added in is much more believable.

Industry secret

Like 75% of models are recycled, subconsciously you're picking up on little animation mistakes that grow more apparent as you are exposed to the same models over and over.

The reason older games (and some of the new indies) are able to get away from it is genuinely fresh exposure to a model and this had been prior to, let's call them "standards" when it comes to the animations of certain actions.

Ironically as the ease of use of these tools to create acceptable animation has directly come at the cost of mastering of utilities.
