It's garbage, if the Xbox version is the standard experience.
Noticeable lag that's only tolerable if you're a normie playing on easy.
Forget playing on your phone in your home, you probably have a million wifi points around you and all of them, including your own, constantly shift channels to keep speed up. Result: your own gig wifi causes awful jitter. And with jitter you will have missing commands. Start looking left, jitter happens, you get stuck going to the left.
Literally should only be turn based games, but that won't bring in money, so you have to lie about it.
Xbox will probably get it right by making it some kind of addon to games you buy, instead of Stadia's "buy at full price" retardation.

If anything, Stadia is a reverse botnet. Instead of millions of devices connecting to a server, it's one central sever connecting to millions of devices.

How noticeable? A TV that's not in game/PC mode and has motion smoothing/interpolation turned on can easily add 100-150ms to input lag. Is it even worse than that?
>>16790765
The connection is bi-directional, so both of your examples describe millions of clients exchanging data with one central server (more like one central cloud, but whatever), ergo both cases are botnet.>Noticeable lag that's only tolerable if you're a normie playing on easy.

It's frustrating how the corporate retards(every single one of them) always put shooters and FIGHTING GAMES first and in front when marketing cloud gaming.
It's like these retarded googled "which games can you notice input delay locally when using a wireless controller" and them licensed only these.
For fuck sake, why they don't stop lying and stop trying to bend the fucking speed of light and instead market games like Fire Emblem, Valkyria Chronicles, Persona 5, or "cinematic" walking simulators like Life is Tumblr or The Lesbian of Us. But no, it's always:
>You can play fighting games and cowaduddy perfectly. Trust me, we can bend physical reality.

Shootans and fightans are both popular and regarded as pillars of core gaming. Basically, you have to include them if you want average normalfags to see your platform as something serious.
There's also the online multiplayer aspect which is important for systematic shekel shakedown. I fully expect Stadia to add Fortnite.

>It's garbage, if the Xbox version is the standard experience.
The Xbox Version (Xcloud I assume you mean) is the premier experience from everything I heard from people who are in the Alpha and have also tried Stadia. Less lag, better value, more consistent performance with less compression artifacting, etc. Stadia seems to be only marginally better than old-Playstation Now - but that won't last long since Playstation has already announced that they intend to just rent Xcloud servers from Microsoft going forward.
They are all just garbage separated by degrees - but what will really differentiate them is their pricing. Google Stadia requires you to "buy games" at full market price before you have access to them. There is a subscription, but that only gets you access to certain games every month and an across the board discount on license purchases. They're trying to be an all-digital online only console streamed to your device. Playstation Now and XCloud are not marketed as or intended to be for the moment anyhow replacements to the home console. They have much larger catalogues of games too choose from, and you get access to all of them for a $10 monthly fee. But those catalogues are on a rotation, so you're still encouraged to buy digital or physical copies of games you like when available. Of these two, word is Microsoft is going to just roll Xcloud service into GamePass Ultimate - so people who already have that subscription will get access to Xcloud for no additional fee ($10 stand-alone). Sony was forced to follow a similar route to keep PSNow soluble - offering local game downloads where available, discounts on purchases, but at the moment PSNow is stand-alone. Still comes out to about $20, same as GPU, but they don't have a real separate platform like PC to include in the offerings to obfuscate the streaming option price hike.

I'd argue that Nvidia's service is the best one due to lack of downloads and better overall latency compared to XCloud and Stadia. I argue this mainly based on experience. Like these services are fine when you're in a hotel in NYC, away from home and wanna play some simple casual vidya, however keep in mind that there WILL be the occasional stutter and you WILL have to work around it.
From my experience, I was able to hook up a Geforce Now app to my laptop and play Destiny 2 and Devil May Cry 5 away from home. That said I was playing these games on an easier mode then I would normally play on, mainly due to the lack of decision making needed for those thought provoking moments that require you to be on your toes and predict your enemies next move. Which is why I'd play Devil May Cry 5 on Normal Mode rather than Hard Mode which is what I usually play on.

The only way any game streaming service could overcome the lag is tachyons by rendering the results of every possible input combination many frames in advance and sending that absurd amount of data to the client machine ahead of time. If you're using a single 360 controller, one frame of render-ahead could be 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 times as expensive as sending individual frames after receiving input. That number will increase exponentially for every additional frame of render-ahead.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's Microsoft that's paying them to use their service initially. Even Nintendo went public earlier this year showing some interest in using Microsoft's servers for game streaming. Microsoft spent massive amounts on cloud infrastructure in the last decade, the second part of their strategy involves forming partnerships. Even if they have to give away or sell their service to competitors to keep them away from Amazon and Google.

There's a much simpler solution; send the models and textures visible on the screen from the cloud and have it rendered locally. Keep a buffer on hand to store previously seen or upcoming portions of the game.
This is called 'edge computing' and is the new buzzword that's going to replace 'cloud computing' soon. I expect the Stadia service will move to this model if Google doesn't shut down in the next year or two.

Yeah but what about the open world games? Won't that make the loading times worse and the data consumption higher, since you might not go into a nearby area, but they've already loaded it for you from the get-go.

Possibly. I think part of it is that so far from what I've seen, Microsoft is the only company really investing significantly in modular submersible server pods that can be deployed anywhere from shallow lakes to deep rivers to coastal areas - bringing the data centers to the customers, rather than running huge expensive server farms hundreds or thousands of miles away from their customers - then trying to engineer (or market) around the laws of physics.
I think a lot of companies are looking at initiatives like Project Natick and seeing that MS is going to have a huge lead and superior service for the forseeable future as they're already close to a position to scale. Tethering to anybody else would be a detriment to their services and put them several years behind the competition.

When Stadia was first announced the question everybody in the press asked was 'how long before Google shuts this down?'. If they were competent reporters they would have asked an international corporate tax attorney about how newer tax breaks for digital media in several countries probably influenced their decision to start Stadia and look at when they expire to give a realistic answer.

Those submersible server farms are meant to skirt around legal jurisdiction issues in the EU and that's why they're only deployed off the coast of Ireland which is well known for its tax haven status. The only thing impressive about them are the lengths tech conglomerates will go to to avoid paying taxes or abide by privacy regulations.
>detriment to their services and put them several years behind the competition.
The only real advantage of 'the cloud' for consumers is automatic backups of personal data and a massive media library that's delivered by streaming. Most people had access to this capability since the mid 2000's. It's 2020 and there isn't a single thing that cloud computing can do well asides for offsite storage.

I hear that might change in the next few days. Youtube's datamining shit finally got them in trouble with the FTC who are now watching them closely – and their solution was to pass the buck of responsibility to the video-makers by forcing them to assign their videos as kid-friendly or adult (no general audience) and mistakes risk getting HUGE fines. It's what finally gotten some people to start quitting the site for alternatives like Vlare and Bitchute. Not many so far because normalfags are complacent sheep, but depending on how they enforce it, this might make them irrelevant and cause them to die like Tumblr.

I don't think it's appropriate for those either. Once you've memorized the menus of an RPG you will start to speed through them. Even if it's not ATB. If the game lags or inputs are dropped while menu'ing that quickly then you will input the wrong command and fuck up the battle. Though the nature of the system will probably prevent you from learning to menu efficiently to begin with.
It doesn't break them like games, but it certainly reduces their playability too.

Maybe they're counting on normalfags lowering their standards even more just like they have been doing since forever accepting the kind of shit that is now commonplace. Specially if they somehow achieve some level of acceptance, when people start using it and it becomes more widespread it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, they'll just accept it because it's what their friends use and what their environment suggest through aggressive marketing, plus it is more convenient which is what gaming seems to be all about. If we got to the point where games journalists can get away with complaining on record about how they actually have to play games things can go anywhere.
