Welcome back niggers, what have you picked up since the last thread? Anything you've got your eye on to pick up before the year's out, or anything you planning on getting in 2020?

What're you:

> BUYING?

> MODDING?

> REPAIRING?

> CONSIDERING?

You're still playing your shit aren't you anon? Not buying shit and displaying rather than use it?

Managed to pick up some Gamecube shit, but primarily Amiga shit to expand on the computer itself. Also a 486 notebook to play X-Wing/Tie Fighter on floppy, but fuck me if finding the floppy versions of these two games isn't fucking irritating.

virtualbox lowkey dropped WinXP support for gaems so I'm pressed to find a XP-era laptop for the 98/NT goodness that doesn't work well on Win10 anymore. Are old thinkpads a good choice?

I grabbed a PVM a while back originally for console games. Just for the hell of it I decided to try it with some PC games. Thief looks absolutely surreal through this thing. I can't really explain it. It felt like I was playing inside of one of those really detailed D&D drawings. It's a real shame there's only so many of these things left. Maybe OLED's will have good CRT emulation?

Towards the end of the year I picked up a bunch of N64 games and also a SNES game I've been seeking for a long time.

>Snowboard Kids 2

>Mystical Ninja 64 Starring Goemon

>Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth

>Flying Dragon 64

>Pocky and Rocky

But I've been taking a break from collecting for the past month or so.

Planning on getting a TheC64 full-sized version when that comes out.

May be worth just getting a original C64, since cheaper and the modern solutions for games make it fucking simple for loading shit. I don't know how compatible TheC64 is for everything.

TheC64 is a better because you can connect a whole bunch of USB stuff to it and it just loads games off flash memory.

With tools available for free online you can make your own C64 games and easily export/play them on TheC64. I think this is a great utility for amateur gamedev and teaching new folks how to make games.

ThinkPads are great but don't have much power. Even a ~2012 one will probably struggle on some of the later XP games, but if you insist on a laptop then that's probably the era you'll need to look on.

Pretty sure even a W520 only comes with, at best, a Quadro 2000M.

You probably want to build a 2008-era build

I'd start with a Core 2 Duo Q6600. Find an LGA775 socket motherboard to match it. Max the RAM on it (or go 4 GB if you're just gonna run 32-bit XP) and then figure out what GPU will peg that processor.

Put it in whatever case you feel like. I'd go for a modern one, since cases from that era were pretty tacky. None of the convenience of a modern chassis; none of the style of a 90's tower.

You'll also want to make registry edits to get the latest security patches. You can get newer drivers working up to a point; a lot of the Vista and even Win7 drivers are backwards-compatible to the earliest NT builds excepting the version-check, so you can patch that out in some cases. It's only Win8+ that they basically rewrote half the kernel so it could be a tablet-friendly operating system and broke drivers.

Good luck, anon!

I bought a WiiU because they're really fucking cheap now. I managed to get the console and nearly every game I'm interested in for about $200 in total. I think the best thing to do with consoles it to wait until a few years after their successor comes out, that always seems to be when things are cheapest. Probably because the resellers haven't managed to buy everything up yet so you can get it directly from the original owners.

There was also a lot more people selling WiiUs than I expected. I guess they all got Switches for christmas.

>Pretty much going for complete editions.

In any case, the fact that stuff like manuals became opt-out part way through the generation can make it hard to know if a PS3 game is actually complete or not at a glance, as many don't have a physical manual. Hope you're doing your research.

>Its only a question of time when DLC and such will get taken offline.

You should have your system CFWed at this point, assuming it's a model properly capable of it (admittedly I'm not sure if that's even a factor anymore). CFW enabled access to functions like Package Manager can allow you to install updates from USB without connecting to the PSN, and I want to say it should let you do the same with pirated DLC, but I'd have to double check the status of if that works with actual copies of (base) games, or just pirated ones if encryption states have to sync.

>BUYING?

8th gen is about to end so i finally got a soystation 4 and a few games (bloodborne, judgment, fist of the north star lost paradise, infamous second son, digimon world next order and horizon zero dawn nobody cares but my copy was a "greatest hits" complete edition that came with a code for a digital copy of it, so i redeemed it then sold that shit back, got a $10 discount on digimon so i only paid $15 for it, horizon itself cost me $15 the ps4 was also bundled with a terrible sportsball game that i traded for FOTNS), a wireless 360 controller (the one whose d-pad you can rotate) with the microsoft receiver and a wii with a classic controller. I also picked up a """small""" wega trinitron for free, grandpa didn't want it anymore and told me i could have it if i could actually get it out of his house (it was on the third floor), doesn't do 480p but ps2/wii games look gorgeous on it provided you use component cables.

>MODDING

Finally got around to hacking my PS3, if the dualshock 3 wasn't such a pile of shit i would actually play games on it. I don't like the dualshock 4 either, and every single third party controller i've tried is just as terrible if not worse.

Wii U owner here, there's really no reason to own this thing. Nintendo has/is porting all the games away to 3ds/Switch, so unless you really want to play Paper Mario Color Splash or Wonderful lol, or just want an easy Gamecube/Wii on an HDTV, there's not much of a point.

You need to get yourself a PCMCIA ethernet card, perhaps. I keep a couple in a box juuuust in case I am provided with a functional laptop with no CD drive and no onboard ethernet. While I can do serial/parallel networking, it's a pain in the ass to do.

I recommend Monkey Island, Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, and other games in that era, and if they run well, try later games. Having a USB floppy drive helps in this, if ethernet isn't an option for some dumb reason.

I don't know specifically for the Xbone, but looking at how regional compatibility has worked before (IE: PS3), if the system of the game you were trying to play was region locked when it was current, it'll still be region locked even if the system you're now playing it on is supposed to be region free (played from disc, anyhow; CFW avoids the checks in regard to digital storage). I would not be surprised if that's still standard.

Xbox One games aren't region locked. Xbox 360 it depended on the publisher so very few games were region locked. Original Xbox is.

Xbox One downloads backwards compatible games rather than from the disc.

It also brings into question if L4D2 will give you the gore version or cut version if you live in Germany/Australia and have a UK/NTSC copy.

I have actually taken most of my gear, old and new, to Goodwill.

I haven't really felt like gaming for the last year or so, nothing even remotely good or interesting has come out in the last 3 years, and it looks like much of the industry is about to go belly up anyway. Dev companies are dropping like flies, the ones that aren't are cutting production and expenditures severely. That is not a good sign.

I dunno anons…maybe I am just outgrowing it, but nothing about gaming excites me anymore. I enjoy it, but the games I know and enjoy are boring because I know how to win at them, and the new games all suck ass. So maybe it is just that I am bored with it.

It's sad to know there are anons too young to know how good CRT is. I have my CRT and LCD side-by-side, and I've played the same games on CRT and LCD multiple times. Am I the only one who believes the reason shit like this is tolerated is because it benefits large corporations and investors?

Slobs like that have no reason to exist other than to make it harder for anyone to escape wage slavery, which means less opportunities for competition and less quality things being put out. Taxes go up for their asscancercare but corporations and investors don't foot the bill. It falls on small business owners and individuals. Look at how it impacts games. There are pretty much no AA studios. It's either massive corporations, solo indies in their freetime putting out watered down versions of older games or it's SJW trustfund kids who use gamedev as their little clique. Even devs that manage to get a gigantic kickstarter budget probably only receive half of it after taxes and kickstarter's cut, which is why you see shit like Underworld Ascendant burn through it's budget before delivery something even remotely acceptable.

Not to mention when you see shit like that exist it just lowers standards for society as a whole. Less people overall have the grit or strength to achieve success. Everyone is brainwashed to be a sheep and as long as they're not the morbidly obese manchild on welfare they're a winner. This also likely contributes to why kickstarters fail, because the devs don't have the backbone to make something substantial.

I just mentioned how this affect games, but the same is true for any industry or any field.

My RX580 can only handle 1920x1080 consistently, or should I forego the refresh rate and dump some more money in the image quality? The most important factors are color quality and a 1 ms response for fighters. It's also be by primary screen - and my current screen (TN, HD, 75 Hz, Freesync, 24.5) will become my secondary screen.

With regards to CRT monitors. Best place you can look at is electric recycling firms, events, or anything. Those things are overflowing with CRTs although for how long? Even then you wont see a PVM there unless you get really lucky. I take the people saying they can spend $150 for a decent PVM with a grain of salt. They probably spend all day every day hunting for deals, live in an area where they're common to find by, probably got those deals years ago or just got lucky. Personally I just bit the bullet and paid whatever it took to get my hands on one. No regrets as I exclusively play most of my games on CRTs now. The colors are just so deep and rich.

I periodically clean out the vents and the foam filters in the systems I use, so it's no big deal. Canned air and a vacuum hose take care of the worst of it. As I don't smoke, most of the dust is fine particles, and the occasional lint ball. My PS2 was a horror show when I brought it back from Gamestop. Could be, if it's closer to where you live. Then again, I don't know that much about shipping. Getting concerned about something I ordered myself; tracking says it's been "shipped" but there's been no evidence to suggest it's even left the original post office, or if it even got there (if it was dropped off at a gas station or something). Do no-post holidays like President's Day jam shit up that much to the point it would just sit there until now?

Let me share with you a fun update

>mail was “forwarded”

>ie it had the wrong address on it and requires me to do “something”

>it’s super vague about it

>try calling in

>robot voice gives me the loop for 20 minutes

>no way to talk to a real person

>go to my post office

>lady at the front basically says what I already know

>”so like, can I give you the right address or what can I do about this?”

>shrugs me off and says she’s sorry she can’t help

>look around online

>have to manually forward it some how

>go back to the phone

>have to use the robot voice and a specific USPS website to enter in the new address

>basically just have to tell it to send it to my local post office and hold it there for me to pick up

>”be sure to pick it up by March third or we’ll send it back!”

>no confirmation email or text to say anything was successful

I am never ordering anything over 10 bucks from the USPS ever again. At least a couple years back you could get ahold of somebody and get things sort of figured out.

Did you try just mashing buttons or shouting random words while on the phone with whatever automated system they use? Usually this will forward you to a real person.

Both

>Press random buttons

>”I’m sorry, I didn’t quite get that”

>goes through options again

>”talk to person” “speak with person” “help” *incoherent rage*

>”I’m sorry, I didn’t quite get that”

>goes through options again

There are also several other USPS customer service numbers and each lead to different automated responses that boil down to doing the same thing. It’s amazing how bad this shit has gotten.

Do they at least still use a keypad input, or are they switching over to voice-only? Because I know some places have taken to doing the latter, and it always strikes me as a bad idea trying to have an algorithm try to discern what you're saying.

Both, but to actually get shit done you need a smart phone so they can send you a website where you have to use both voice and input. It’s so bad even the emails are automated.

I’d definitely recommend anyone ordering through the USPS to be very careful as, from what I can tell, there is no way to get anything but very limited automated help.

When I was being sent a package from the UK last year, the fucks at the USPS played knock knock zoom zoom, left a pick up tag, then took my package to the next state over for holding, not my local post office barely a mile away. The local package smashers didn't know what was happening.

The rot in their core is now showing as great blotches all over the surface.

I honestly haven't had any issues with USPS myself, but it's certainly making more leery of them. Doesn't help that in most cases when I've had to order something online (I always check local for a while first; sometimes can net far better prices than I'd see online), the customer isn't given a choice between whether the seller ships with USPS or UPS.

Package I'm waiting on finally moved from the drop off after like four days, and now seems to be held up at a distribution site. Hasn't even left the state it's coming from. It's not late yet, but I'm still concerned.

That sounds awful

>>16850504

Yeah, I don’t normally have issues with them but until they get their customer service fixed I’ll be doing everything in my power to avoid them in the future. If nothing else at least there was some way to get my package forwarded to my local post office, even if it was horribly convoluted… I’ll update if it actually works or if shit falls through hard. I’d like to be surprised and find my package is there tomorrow, but I imagine it’ll be at least 3 days before this gets fixed that is, if something else doesn’t happen in the mean time.

Honestly, I’m not mad about my package having the wrong address and being forwarded to who knows where, but what makes me mad is just how hard it was to get help and fix the whole thing. Hell, if I wasn’t babysitting my package who knows where it could have ended up as they basically would have “fixed” the address by guessing what it was and sending it there(or so the lady at the post office told me). The whole thing was a mess and I still don’t know if it’s fixed yet.

I'm certainly glad I've got tracking to look at with mine too. I'm just wondering what exactly the hold up has been. Usually stuff I order gets here days in advance of what it's expected, but here they're taking their sweet time to ship and/or even just fish it out of the dropbox. Maybe when it's supposed to be one-to-two week expected shipping, they mean it now.

No, it's been shipping from Texas. Hear the midwest has been having some bad weather, so maybe that's been tying into it. But it still feels like a lot longer than it's usually been for when I've ordered stuff (which usually gets hear well before expected date), and I don't especially like seeing shit sit around for four days like it got lost or forgotten somewhere. Seems it finally got into my state this morning, so I figure it'll arrive tomorrow or Tuesday. Hoping it's not smashed up; longer something like this is stuck in shipping, the more wear I figure it's apt to take.

tl;dr Pick one.

TN is bad for viewing angles and color accuracy, but is relatively cheap when having high refresh rates and great timings. There are IPS screens that fit all your requirements, but pricing would start around $300 according to my estimates.

Finally arrived. Package wasn't smashed, but the outer box was beat as hell (and looked like it had punch spilled on it or something), and the cartridge needed the contacts manually cleaned before it the system would see anything as having been inserted to read. Everything else was fine though, so not a loss, I guess? But if anything, it's yet more reason to distrust stated text conditions and ask sellers for item pictures, even if it risks being bought in the meantime. And that chances are, if a game's a lot cheaper than it should be in that condition, if it's not a new seller looking for quick initial ratings, it's probably cheap for a reason.

Funny, my figure arrived today as well. My drama continued right up till the delivery though.

>finally figured out how to get ahold of somebody at USPS (hit 0 several times time the voice says something slightly different then say “speak with representative”)

>find out the address on my package is VERY wrong

>ask them to send it to my local post and just hold it there

>the person says that they’ve done it and sent a message to the post office, as well as fixed the address

>wake up today

>the package is out for delivery

>end up finding out you can contact your local post, but you have to find the number via local business resources and can’t find it through the various search engines

>explain the situation and ask them where my package is headed

>it’s headed to the wrong address it was initially

>say they’ll contact the guy delivering it

>at this point don’t trust anything to go right so go out and wait on the postman around the time he comes

>he pulls up and hands me the package and we chat for a bit

>turns out he actually knows I live here and basically just ignored the address and delivered it to me

Ive got a based postman, but damn was working with the USPS to fix something that should have been simple a miserable experience. Hopefully people who have issues in the future can learn from my experience.

I guess both of our dramas ended today, so that’s a good thing.

Mandarake. It’s the fucking best. You get shit directly from nip stores, they are super anal about quality so a little dent in the box often means they’ll heavily discount it, and you don’t have to worry about Chinese knockoffs.

Apparently it's a common complaint with it, but I digress. You know anything good that can be found at regular stores that can unstick it without damaging the paint, or is it a case where you'd need some specific model grease or something? Had to keep it sitting in it's box since Christmas because it feels like I'm going to break something just trying to match the default pose on the box.

I'm >>16817262, i got a couple new things.

>BUYING?

I got a switch and a nintendo branded sandisk SD card for $360, everything is almost brand new the switch was in mint condition and everything but the tablet and joycons were still neatly packaged because the guy told me it was meant for his girlfriend, but she left him a couple days before her birthday, he played kirby for a few minutes before putting the switch back in its box and leaving it to rot in a closet for roughly a year i have no idea why he told me this, probably just made up a shitty sob story to get me to buy it out of pity because business wasn't good, the switch is only missing the manual and the box is a bit damaged. Got this thing on a unofficial vidya store that opened quite recently, either the guy running it doesn't know how to price stuff yet (people online want $100 for just the fucking dock, the nintendo SD card still goes for $70) or he doesn't know the value of unpatched units. I never thought i would ever buy one of these things considering how jewed nintendo's prices are in my country; the switch retailed at $350 and console+game+storage bundles start at $450. Now i can finally play multiplats without shelling out $30+ for the ps4 port, i'm looking forward to hinomaruko, sakuna of rice and ruin and megaman zero/zx legacy collection.

I also bought a couple ps4 games: gravity rush 2, judgment, medievil and spider-man GOTY, all of them exclusives i've been meaning to play for some time, but local stores never have good games in stock and the ps4 itself was always hilariously overpriced.

>MODDING

The switch i just bought, i haven't gotten around to it yet because i wanted to take a photo while everything's still intact, but it doesn't seem that complicated, i'm gonna struggle with the tinfoil jig though, thankfully autoRCM means i only have to do it once.

>REPAIRING

Wanted to repair my PS3, it kept shutting down while i was playing god of war 3 because i bought it in 2011 and this revision still had the faulty NEC/tokin capacitors of the fat model. Opened it up, cleaned everything and applied new thermal paste, the temps are lower and it runs much quieter, but it wouldn't be long before it dies. It's completely not worth fixing, so i took it to a cash converter and got $67. I don't know if i'll ever buy another one, i had it for years and i only played about 10 games on it.

>CONSIDERING?

A switch pro controller, the stock d-pad (if you can even call it that) gives me cancer. I also want one of those 8bitdo wireless dongles for the playstation classic.

I apologize for the shitty picture quality, but this phone cost me $200, also >spanish, forgive me for being a spic.

Pretty sure tacoland just uses the same rating system as the rest of North America, while getting separate prints from US and Canada (which share the same by my estimate). I mean, I've never seen a game here with the cover text being Spanish focused; it's always English, or English and French, though I assume that, at least for US-sold copies, there might be English, French, and Spanish scripts in the game itself.

You want obnoxious though, look at how many PAL prints of Bloodborne: Game of the Year Edition there are. Many of them have dunecoon runes on them to cater to rapefugees. I felt lucky my import copy (being that SCEA didn't do a local one in an effort to get a constant profit stream off preowned vanilla copies from people still having to pay them for DLC) was one of the UK ones that actually was only English, just by the principle of it.

>Can't blame the motherfucker for not looking through the manual. Nobody else does, that's why games today all have painfully long tutorials to make sure you understand how to play it, and not just let the player sink or swim.

Yeah, but you still can't call it complete when it's had a sizable amount ripped out, and isn't just an old survey product registration postcard
