While 3 is FAR from perfect, it gets better later on into the game. They've also said this one is NOT going to be deserts, so that helps my outlook.

Part of the reason why 3 was meh is because a good chunk of their assets were from a canceled military game they were making and a failed doom pitch. It's a good way saving time (and in turn money) but the game suffered for that.

Yeah, the first few levels feel VERY "Kill the terrorists" but… I found myself enjoying the game by the end of it. They don't seem to have been trying to save time this time around, so hopefully they've pulled out all the stops. I'm pirating it before maybe being a good goy

Eurgh. That was the biggest thing I hated about the third game. Why are they so insistent on keeping it? just have the revolver/deagle and coach gun be the only things that need reloading like the first two games.

they said the gameplay is not indicative to how it will play on release, they were working out the graphics mostly - terrain engine, rendering lots of enemies. they never said anything about gameplay that will be definitely set on stone.

I can't say I'm looking forward to this game at all.
A semi-open world Serious Sam doesn't sound like a good idea. I already thought that SS3 was pretty bland as it is. Yes, I know they didn't actually want to make SS3 the way the did, it was just them salvaging a project that fell though.
