Merry Christmas /v/

Any anons played Rain World? I thought it was a pretty cool game, though I have yet to do everything or even try the Hunter.

Shame the game seems to have been to difficult for most, but it makes it that much more satisfying when things finally click and old dangerous areas become a cake walk.

They probably should have made some of the shit like advanced movements or where you're supposed to go more obvious. I didn't realize a good bit of important stuff until I stumbled upon it on the wiki.

I bought this the other day. Pretty neat, reminds me of oddworld where everything wants to eat you or kill you. I just got past the garbage and think I'm going the right way. I've gone into it blind and the only piece of advice I was given is avoid the drainage pit as its a newb trap.

You are, keep going.

Playing blind is the best idea by far, but this game really suffers for this cause you'll very likely not realize a few helpful techniques and shit. The game benefits from the wiki a ton but it's easy to spoil yourself, and I wouldn't recommend it if you really want to the full effect of what comes.

Best advice I could give is to follow the yellow guy, though he'll stop appearing for a while at a certain point, but by then, you will be on the right track.

And make sure to interact fully with creatures you find. There's a lot more to all of them then you first figure.

Don't get discouraged if things start to kick your ass near the middle or so, the middle seems to be the hardest part in the game and it's mostly downhill from there difficulty-wise.

I got halfway decent at it and beat Survivor, but Hunter is too much for me. If the time limit weren't there I might be able to enjoy it, but with it for some reason the game just stresses me out too much to even get a few cycles into a run.

More Slugcats fucking when, though? And PC update when?

There's a mod for that™ if you didn't know

http://www.raindb.net/

Called Unlimited Cycles for Hunter.

I think I've read they may implement the black slugcat from arena into the maingame sometime, but who knows. They've been meaning to bring 1.7 to pc for a year now but that's just some bugfixes.

I remember finding the… bug princess? Or something, I can't remember, but it was a female character I believe.

That weird guide creature kept point in her direction but afterwards… didn't show up yet. Heck, most of the time that guide creature didn't' even point the right or closest way.

I'm not sure what to do after that. As in: I'm pretty sure there's one tunnel among the 200 tunnels I've passed on the way here that lead into a new area I haven't visited. That's pretty much how I found all areas past the first one. I also remember one "Karma Gate" I passed on the way here that I didn't open because I didn't have enough Karma, but fuck me if I remember where that was now.

I'm pretty much wandering around, trying to find it, and the initial excitement and wonder are slowly being replaced with boredom. After an hour of two of wandering and trying new paths, you end up sticking your head in a tube that a Lizard was sleeping in and bam, that's one Karma level down, so fuck you: get grinding or that door stays closed.

I''m not sure I like the Karma system. I can understand the reason and why they made it this way, but if you have a nest near a gate you need to open, you end up farming Karma for a few minutes, and farming isn't one thing I thought I'd be doing in this game.

There's plenty of cool shit though, especially the interactions between the wild life. I loved figuring out that you could trade pearls for safe passage with those "tribal" things. Always keep a pearl on me now because of that. I love how terrifying the Vulture creatures are, you really feel like prey: running into the nearest hole, trying to distract them, dash like mad when they're busy with another prey they snatched.

Some dickish moves though, especially with the "black bush/kelp plant that helps you climb OH OOPS, it just pulls you down and kills you, LMAO". A small portion of the game is just noob traps, shit you're garanteed to fall into and lose a life the first time you're going through. That by itself will annoy and pull many people away, but with the Karma system they got going, that's gonna extend that "annoying/frustration" feeling to a lot more people.

Shame, the artstyle really grew on me, particularly the animations.

Also, the game barely explains all the movements you can do. You can backflip in the air and throw a spear down like you're some devil may cry bunny skewering demons.

Yeah, the game is hard/annoying enough to be a big disservice to itself in many ways. It really comes down to how long you're able to put up with the world shitting on you, which isn't so bad by itself, but it's compounded by the fact the game doesn't communicate stuff to the player all to well. The little yellow guy should've been designed to show up more often imo, and as you said at a point he just stops showing up, which is pretty unnerving in that middle portion of the game where you can get unsure of where you're headed, especially knowing the karma gates can impede your travel.

I never had too much trouble needing to karma farm except for in this one spot in the underhang, entirely because the hibernation den could only be exited by jumping to a pole over a pit which could be easily fucked up.

And if you're wondering still, a lot of the gates you encounter early game are just for backtracking later, just follow the yellow guy and you should just keep moving forward.

As I said, it sucks how the game pushes you to look shit up to keep from being baffled and yet hinges pretty heavily on going in blind for maximum effect. If nothing else, I think everyone should look at the advanced movements page on the wiki. Shit is handy but not even remotely touched on in the game, and a lot of it I would never have thought on trying on my own. Worse, the moves themselves can be surprisingly hard to pull off consistently, I can barely do the backflip into forward roll yet can sometimes.

All in all, a great game that just presents itself poorly in some key regards.

After finding "the bug princess" the guide is supposed to point you towards a new area, (actual spoiler:) or fuck off if you did something specific. I'll give you aomw general hints on direction from the shoreline: there's 3 wide water areas and the one you need has a lot of land bits and finally you keep going right on that one, then up once you get inside. It's not in the place you met that character

Note that the guide shows an inteded path, but certainly not the shortest or maybe even easiest, just one that follows the intended difficulty curve and shows interesting mechanics.

As for karma, stop caring about it until you find a gate you want to pass, famring a whopping five minutes only whenever you find a gate hardly requires effort nor should it be boring. There's also always eeeeeh? easy modo? without karma gates, although it's less lethal in general and requires more food. Finally, you're the first person I've met that didn't realize the kelp was trying to eat them. It lurches towards you from a pretty good distance, for god's sake.Be wary of anything new, and keep distance accordingly, then only investigate closer if it seems safe. Works for everything except one creature, the eyeball things in garbage wastes. And possibly the tribe, but they get essentially explained to you on the guided path. Everything has to perceive you somehow, you get an unfair advantage with your 2D view. Different creatures have different senses.

>There's a mod for that™ if you didn't know

I do know, but that feels like cheating Hece why I want the damn slugcat mod, so I can play the ame a lot more with different characters until I git gud enuf to play Hunter.

The update supposedly gives the two non-survivor modes a new ending, too. Even more reason for me to wait with playing Hunter.

I got to the new area, still looking around and getting lost, but at least it's somewhere new and exciting and that's where the game shines it's most. Thanks for tips.

The killer-kelp I'm talking about isn't on water. That one, yeah, it's fairly obvious. I'm talking about one specfic screen, where there's several vertical poles you need to climb higher, only one of them is a kelp with no leaves. As soon as you jump towards that "pole" to grab on, it actually grabs you, the "kelp" leaves show up and it pulls you down.

It was an assholish moment that you learn to avoid in the future, but it made me wonder why the hell was it there. Because you're right, everything else is pretty fair as every creature as to spot you and you can evade things if you take the time to observe and learn. That's my favourite part of the game.

Those octupii monsters in the underwater for instance were terrifying, but then you leave the water and think yourself safe but WOOP, they can also walk on land and I've never ran so fast in my life.

Unfortunately I know that the Guide disappears if you eat one of the shinny things in the "bug princess" lair. I spoiled myself when looking up movement techs as >>16787247 pointed out. It's a shame, but one I can live with.

I forgot to mention earlier, if you find any non-white pearls, either don't touch or put them in a den for safekeeping cause they might be important to you later on. If you mess with them but don't put them up they despawn forever.

That's a mimic, they show their leaves every so often in a breathing pattern. If you kill them a lot them can evolve into the big kelp ones. They're kind of there to make yu go slow and methodical even when traveling, not just around new creatures, I guess. Also I think you can last-second spear them if you do grab on, but you need really good reflexes for that.

Slugcats aren't slimy, they're fuzzy. They evolved from artificially created pipe-cleaning bioconstructs which were more slug-like, though.

The slugcat does make a sort of schliking noise when you go through the pipes, though. I like to think it's fuzzy with a bit of slime.

This was probably the only game in recent memory that really let me become immersed in a living, breathing, alien world. I pretty much played it non-stop for days, often times exploring and taking it in just because I could which is something I almost never do in games these days. I basically became slugcat for a week.

I love how difficult areas can become easy when you figure out something new, it really rewards experimentation and creativity, like when you first see those small black and blue pods, the ones that you can sometimes find near where you start seeing those edible bubbles, and learn that the black pods are seeds that pop when they become wet, making them edible, and that's just one of many mysteries (Hell, there's even a few things about slugcat himself the tutorial doesn't tell you about). I know lots of games have worlds that LOOK alien, but very few games capture that kind of unique wonder that makes one FEEL alien. Of course you have to have faith that your efforts will pay off though, when I see comments like "Stupid game, how was I supposed to know that??" I worry some people are just too jaded or conditioned by modern games to really experiment, which is a damn shame because you can really miss out on a lot.

Oh but, one thing that kind of annoyed me though, is that despite the areas being so gigantic, there are very few connections between them, so it can be frustrating wondering if you are making any progress at all if you have a destination, and some areas can be "skipped" over (they don't become inaccessible, you'll just have to backtrack).

So I made a simple little map. It's spoilered because I don't think you should look at it unless you are really stuck, or are far into the game but are so paranoid about "skipping" some areas that it's ruining your enjoyment of the game. I tried to make it as bare bones as possible, leaving out some of the early areas entirely, drawing the rest as vague blobs, labeling most of them as "???", labeling three areas with an in-game holograph, three with their actual names, a split path is labelled "easy" and "hard", and one area is labelled with some "mysterious flavor text".

Mid-game spoiler: Whats a good way to get neurons and pearls to Moon? I'm currently somewhere in the Sky Islands at the gate next to Chimney Canopy and I keep dying/eating the neuron.I can't teleport by using achievement marks because I can't carry stuff with me when I do that.

Late-game spoiler: I also have another savefile where I'm in Subterranean, under the train that is slipping into a big hole. Can I get out? Can I leave? I don't want to delve any deeper until I'm done exploring other places.

Usually the way I can tell if a pole is a mimic or not, even when it's not moving is seeing how smooth it is, real poles are often bumpy or slimy but mimics are completely smooth.

>mid game spoiler

If you're already full, you can hold the eat button to store some edible things in your stomach like you can with rocks. Same goes for pearls, but there you don't even have to be full. Also pretty sure stuff in your stomach teleports along with you

>late game spoiler

If I remember correctly, you'd have to go deeper and then out another exit that eventually leads to shorelines, but you'll have to pass through some of the most difficult areas in the game for that. Though I think there's another exit, too, but I don't know that one myself.

>>16793169

The game's about learning from those mistakesand overcoming them, early on you die a lot in the first area but after playing through a few others you'll probably be able to breeze through it from one end to the other and back in a single cycle while pissing off every lizard in the map. If nothing else works, consider either Monk mode, or practice killing shit in arena mode. Killing the things that try to kill you often makes the game easier, along with various other perhaps non-obvious solutions. For instance killing a bird lets you take it's mask and holding that thing scares away most predators, and you can feed some critters like the large flies to lizards to tame them.

It also helps to just not give a shit about surviving for a while, exploring everything you can, and then looking for a strategy to easily survive the exact amount of cycles you need to pass through a gate you found. Combined with stockpiling fruit in your sleeping den and the karma flower which respawns at your death location that should at least allow you to bumble through the game even when you're shit at it.
